To make a complaint about Hermes delivery driver?

I was sat in my living room watching tv and saw a man walk past my window Hmm then I heard a loud banging noise which scared me half to death. The man then posted something through my door.

Turns out he didn't bother to knock and just decided to throw my parcel over the side gate! Then post a slip saying 'sorry I missed you'.

my front door is in my living room he Did not knock at all. I actually watched him walk past my window!

Luckily the parcel wasn't broken but it was in a big cardboard box so could have contained anything. It had a remote control toy car so luckily that didn't break.

Why go through the effort of posting a slip and walking further to throw the parcel over the gate?

Aibu to complain about this? It made me really annoyed and can't see any logic to it at all.

don't complain to Hermes, complain to whoever your bought your item from who is choosing to use Hermes to delivery for them. If these companies upbraided Hermes and refused to use them, they'd change their ways soon enough.

Weebitawks · 22/11/2018 08:47

Maybe he didn’t knock as it was so early and was trying to be considerate ?

TheSmallAssassin · 22/11/2018 08:48

So what was the bang if it wasn't him knocking on the door? I'm confused!

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 22/11/2018 08:51

That does sound bad practice OP, but I have nothing but praise for my Hermes courier. She never bothers to ring the bell, but leaves parcels in the same safe place for me. Always picks up on time too, and she is cheerful on the rare occasion I actually speak to her!

ElainaElephant · 22/11/2018 08:59

The problem is that courier companies are in a hugely competitive market and they slash their prices as low as possible (unless you live on an island or in the Highlands of Scotland) in order to get the business from the big high street chains. Hence they pay the delivery drivers less so they have to do more to get a decent wage.

I know Royal mail get slagged a lot, but the service I get from them is tremendous in comparison, and I always use them if possible.

Basically, you get what you pay for.

C8H10N4O2 · 22/11/2018 09:04

I wouldn’t bother. These drivers are paid a pittance and have a lot of deliveries to make in a day..

And that attitude is why they are paid so badly and continue to provide an appalling service. People actually think its acceptable.

Our local Hermes courier routinely lobs parcels over the side gate an never knocks. I've had stuff damaged by being thrown into buckets of water, destroyed by impact and being left out in the rain even after being labelled "delicate".

Hermes won't respond to you as you are not "their customer" - each time I have to go through the retailer - but you can document it on Twitter and other public sites.

I now say to retailers that I am happy to pay extra for a proper courier (Hermes/Yodel are the only persistent problem in my area) but won't be able to place an order if they only use Hermes due to cost/hassle of sorting out problems.

princesstiasmum · 22/11/2018 09:05

I have had 2 deliveries by Hermes in the last few days and the driver was lovely, but last year i was wating for a parcel and watching , my living room is at the back, so cant see anything of the road or who passes my kitchen window, but have a glass panel in my front door so left my living room door open so could see through the glass ,i saw a caed come through the letterbox, no one rang or knocked,i went to get it and same thing, sorry i missed you parcelto be collected
I was furious, ran outside but he had gone,it was Yodel not Hermes

Snowdrifthill · 22/11/2018 09:06

I think Hermes as a company is awful, but I'm torn because my Hermes delivery driver is so lovely. He's definitely getting a Christmas tip!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 22/11/2018 09:07

Alfie190 you would be happy with a parcel being thrown over your gate? This driver didn't know or care whether the contents were fragile and imo shouldn't have thrown it anywhere because he's in a rush.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 22/11/2018 09:14

I have complained more than one to Hermes about this and they did nothing. I talked to the actual delivery person and he has not thrown anything over the fence since that time.

bananasinpyjamas18 · 22/11/2018 09:16

I had a delivery from a hermes courier two days ago. Hes normally alright! even chats for a minute when i wish he wouldnt he pushed a stack of parcels in my arms and then shut my front door on me! I have had to sign for every other parcel i've recieved from them. Opening them up I realise theres one not even for my address. It's for a house on a road off of mine. Tried to deliver it myself twice. Had another delivery from hermes the next day. So gave it back to him. He had no idea he had even lost a parcel. Baffled.

onthenaughtystepagain · 22/11/2018 09:21

I was once on the computer when an email popped up 'You're parcel was successfully delivered at 11.00' the current time, no ring or anything. Dashed to the door, opened it to an astonished delivery man about to ring, he apparently does the update before leaving the van and he'd seen me through the window.
Complaining to Hermes is hopeless, two parcels have not been delivered to my daughter, claimed they had tried x3 on both occasions which they hadn't.

Hunlife · 22/11/2018 09:25

Good luck even getting through to someone at Hermes to make a complaint.

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/11/2018 09:31

Complain to the supplier of the goods. Your contract is with them, not with Hermes - Hermes have no obligation to you. The only way the delivery firm will up their game is if they discover they are losing contracts through their bad service.

RupertBear15 · 22/11/2018 09:41

The law is absolutely clear. If you personally do not receive a parcel, the retailer is liable to refund you or replace the item (s). So if Hermes,Yodel or other company leave your parcel in a ‘safe’ place, eg in a porch, in a shed, with a neighbour etc ( even if you have said online that is ok) then that is still vulnerable to theft or loss. If they can’t make sure you have personally been handed the goods, posted them through your front door or you have signed for them, always remember you can claim back from the retailer. No one should go looking for hours to find their parcel and knock on every door! That’s just giving Hermes further encouragement to be sloppy with deliveries. Tell the retailer you have not received the item (s) and demand a refund. The onus is on them to prove that the goods have been delivered to you, not on you to prove they didn’t arrive. So always remember you rights.

Bluntness100 · 22/11/2018 09:45

I wouldn't complain no, the car wasn't broken and these drivers earn very very little. They need the jobs, are under huge pressure and no damage was done here.

Why lose someone their job over it. Especially just before Xmas.

So sure, it wasn't good, but no harm was done and this driver could have kids, a family, so for me, no it's not complaint worthy.

newrubylane · 22/11/2018 09:47

I would complain, but with the emphasis on the company policy that causes the issue, not the individual driver.

Nanny0gg · 22/11/2018 09:56

Our Hermes driver is brilliant.

Yodel, however...

Letsmove1t · 22/11/2018 09:56

Complain to the retailer. If they'd are bothered they can pass your instance to their relationship manager at Hermes to highlight the difference between the service deal sold in the boardroom and the reality of what they've agreed to pay for. Nothing will happen unless the customers speak up and all the suits agreeing these deals still think they've done a great job - because they are not being told differently

Lunalula · 22/11/2018 10:05

When I lived in a flat above a shop. Hermes driver was useless. I was tracking on my phone and it was outside and then suddenly gave me a notification saying we wasn't in, and he took a pic of the shop which was sent to me via email Confused which is odd because the shop was open and if he went in and asked where the address was, they would've told him. My dp spent hours on phone to customer services explaining situation but nothing got sorted apart from the driver got a verbal warning

catsmother · 22/11/2018 10:23

Anyone would think these delivery drivers were the only people to be paid a pittance. Guess what - umpteen others are too, and would soon lose their jobs if they behaved with such little care and respect. I wfh doing a shitty job with no security, no benefits, nothing. If I don't meet the standards required of said shitty job I'd be let go pronto.

We had a parcel 'delivered' by Hermes a while ago. Except it wasn't. Even though Hermes insisted it had been 'signed for'. Except it hadn't been, because we were all out at the time.

Hermes claimed the old 'contract not with you' shite. And therefore refused to prove the signed for bit by showing us the bloody signature.

We complain to retailer who apologise and begin investigations apparently ….

In the meantime, we get a knock 9pm the following day, in the dark to find great hulking unknown man on doorstep huffing and puffing and insisting he left parcel 'there' - points to spot by side of door. Yes, it's the delivery driver apparently. We don't know if he left it 'there' or not as we weren't in, but explain if it was signed for, as claimed, why would it need to be left anywhere?! Man looks sheepish, confesses to forging signature but is insistent parcel left blah blah blah. Goes on about losing his job and is there for about 15 mins. Not nice.

Parcel turns up eventually in ^neighbours'' bin Hmm

Retailer gives us discount for next order, says they'll review delivery firm. Hermes however doesn't give a shit even when told driver admitted to lying about signature. Nor do they care that being confronted by strange ranting man late at night was intimidating and intrusive. And that, despite contract not being with us, hypocritical bastards! Angry

Meanwhile, yesterday, we were in but occupied. Didn't hear knock (if there was one), but found letters and parcel on the side in our hall. From bloody Royal Mail who had tried our door and breached the threshold to do this. I could have been walking downstairs naked to find a stranger in the hall, there were keys on the side, a house cat could have got out …. anything. I'm raging and OH is in middle of complaint about that now as well. Regardless of whether or not we chose to lock our door no-one has any right to gain entry without being invited to Angry

Penhaligon · 22/11/2018 10:58

Mine was just left on my doorstep, in plain sight of anyone walking/driving past! I have no idea how long it was there as I was out all morning.

To make a complaint about Hermes delivery driver?
Nesssie · 22/11/2018 11:01

What was the banging noise then?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 22/11/2018 11:05

What if the car had been damaged though? He didn't know what was in it and whether he had damaged the contents.

What if someone had stolen it because the OP wasn't actually in?

Who would have refunded the OP then?
