So I ordered a purse online from a well known brand.
I paid £12 so cheap and cheerful.
The parcel arrived today and it was well packaged in a nice box and wrapped etc.
I opened it and it was a different purse (loved it ) and I checked online and it is selling on the site for £100 Shock
Moral dilemma ...keep or return ?
Would you tell them ?

There was a thread on here yonks ago where the op was struggling money wise but her very young DC had a few hundred quid from gifts etc. She asked if it was ok to dip into this and pay it back when she was in a better position and she was absolutely slaughtered by quite a few posters. Some even suggested she get a payday loan rather than 'steal' from her own child Hmm. That thread really stuck with me.

MeVoila · 22/11/2018 15:22

I'd fess up. I wouldn't be able to enjoy it.
I'd contact customer services and say they've sent the wrong item but you are prepared to keep it because you need a purse right away and haven't got time to reorder. - for example it could be a present that you have to give today. I would think they should let you keep it if it's their error and it would inconvenience you to return it.
(Btw- does the item number / description on your delivery paperwork match the item you ordered or the item that was delivered?.)

MeVoila · 22/11/2018 15:25

Check your bank account tho- incase you've been charged for it...
I was sent a duplicate order by Next this week. I couldn't keep it and told them. I couldn't send my kids to school in cyber-shoplifted clothes..,

IdblowJonSnow · 22/11/2018 15:27

In this instance i would keep it. Do you like the purse?! I am fairly honest in most circumstances but I couldn't be bothered with the calking/ posting it back when it's not your error. V unlikely someone would lose their job over that.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 22/11/2018 15:42

If you keep it then technically it's theft

If the warehouse box is incorrectly labelled this will have happened to more then one person. Statistically at least one of them will do the decent thing and let the shop know so the chances are the OP will be chased for return or payment anyway as they can look through their database to see who ordered cheap purse and got expensive purse.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 22/11/2018 16:39

I really don’t large retailers care enough to go trawling though databases and then have to collect their wrong orders which they would have to do.

Ikea sent us an extra wardrobe and I really had to push to get it collected as I really didn’t want to have the bother of hauling it up the recycling centre. I think they thought I might take it back to the store myself, their error they collect at my convenience

Lovemusic33 · 22/11/2018 16:43

Ohh, I just remembered, a couple of years ago during Black Friday I ordered a pair of snow boots from Amazon, they sent me out 2 pairs, I kept quiet but after a few days they contacted me asking for them back, they sent a courier (made me print labels) to come and collect them. Might be worth not using it for a while in case they realise their mistake and ask for it back.

nicebitofquiche · 22/11/2018 16:45

Tell them. If it's the huge online company I'm thinking of they'll tell you to keep it.

Mummadeeze · 22/11/2018 17:30

I got sent a scooter by mistake from Argos. It was a massive hassle to get them to collect it and went on for weeks. I would feel bad not to own up though.

BunnyTeapot · 22/11/2018 17:31

Merry Christmas

RangeRider · 22/11/2018 17:33

Whenever Amazon have made a mistake (or indeed when I've made a mistake & ordered 2 of the same book!) I've told them & they've told me to keep it. No question, no hassle. And I don't have to feel bad.
Quite scary how many have no morals on here.

Carriecakes80 · 22/11/2018 17:41

Lol I would keep it and not lose a wink of sleep!

SparkleBanana · 22/11/2018 17:48

I had this last week. I ordered something value of £26, they sent me sought after Lego set £250. I didn’t feel it was right to keep it so I contacted them and they collected it, and sent me my baubles.

I won’t lie, checked prices on eBay but after reading up about where I stood legally didn’t think it was worth it.

dontalltalkatonce · 22/11/2018 17:57

No brainer. I'd have kept it. Bonus!

HotMessMama · 22/11/2018 17:57

Me, I’d keep it.

You could do the honest thing and tell them, they might then ask you to return it and send you the original £12 purse you ordered but I bet you won’t ever be able to stop thinking about that £100 beauty Wink

StroppyWoman · 22/11/2018 18:01

When I was self-employed, I made a few mistakes like your retailer (ie I ended up undercharging/overdelivering on a couple of jobs)

I always regarded that as a fair Idiot Tax on my stupidity and never once expected the customer to have to pay more/return items. Taught me to pay more attention.

Keep it if you like it, email and tell them if it distresses you, but refuse to go out of your way to return it and have them collect it if they want it back.
(in my case, the local post offices have closed down so it's a bus ride to get to one)

Zbag · 22/11/2018 18:03

I wouldn't say a thing. Enjoy the purse!

LoudJazzHands · 22/11/2018 18:07

Nice purse :)

Indie139 · 22/11/2018 18:10

Tbh id probs keep quiet

ILoveHumanity · 22/11/2018 18:11

I’m thinjng to take a note of those who are saying to keep it so I never take their advise in the future

Llongyfarchiadau · 22/11/2018 18:11

@MarthaArthur

Enjoy your purse op. I once got a £100 dress free when it wasn't scanned at the till. Probably the only good thing to ever happen to me.

You got a dress free? You stole it.

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 22/11/2018 18:13

@racecardriver really? I didn’t know this. Which law?
