AIBU to think you can't actually crack your own skull with a hairdryer

Yes, I really am that stupid.

Managed to whack my forehead at the hairline with the hairdryer 9 days ago. It was a proper whack. Saw stars and everything. There may have been a few unladylike words uttered Grin.

Well, 10 days later and I can finally touch the area where I hit and there is a dent. A big dent. Blush DH thinks I've cracked my skull and says I need to see a doc.

He's being daft right?

not impossible.
but there is not much that can be done, can't put the head in a cask...
as you were fine after injury (no concussion I assume) I wouldn't bother seeing a dr

disclaimer: personal opinion, not medical professional

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 21/11/2018 19:43

I shut my own head in my own car door so perhaps I'm not the best to offer advice. Perhaps you could ask for a phone appointment, explain what you've done to the receptionist and once she's finished laughing they could point you in the appropriate direction.

I fractured my skull and as long as there’s no risk for brain infection or any brain injury they just kind of leave you.

Mine still hurts sometimes when I touch it and sometimes I just wake up with it feeling really tender, it’s been about 8 years Sad

I almost just fainted.

I would have thought some kind of bandage would be in order?

ImpendingDisaster · 21/11/2018 21:26

I shut my own head in my own car door

Again, I almost fainted

chickywoo · 21/11/2018 21:27

Oooo I agree with impending disaster
All this hole in your head stuff is making my legs feel funny Shock

TroysMammy · 21/11/2018 21:32

I decided one day to swap the fridge door around. I had my hand on the door, top part of the fridge freezer, but dropped the pin. I bent to pick it up and the door fell and smacked me on the head. I saw stars but there was no LOC. However I wrote what happened just in case I was found dead in bed the next day.

I've also got a cracking scar on my eyebrow where I stood too near to the car door when flinging it open. If I had been an inch and a half taller it would have had my eye out.

BlueJava · 21/11/2018 21:38

Perhaps call the NHS number and explain the situation and ask for advice.

MadameButterface · 21/11/2018 21:40

Should not have clicked this thread 🤕 i feel funny just reading these. Ow!

TodaysFishIsTroutALaCreme · 21/11/2018 21:52

Am so glad am not the only Muppet here Grin

Yeah, I don't think there is much to be done about it but I am intrigued. Will speak to the receptionists at my GPs tomorrow and see if they think I need to be seen. It still hurts a lot to touch and although the headaches have all but gone, my head hurts like billy-o when I bend over. I only noticed the dent because the swelling has gone down. I had one heck of an egg.

troy do you think this Fred counts as my note? Grin

If you are showing signs of head injury e.g. wobbly, vomiting, acting out of character (look up nhs head injury advice)then see your Dr. We don't x-ray skills to see if they are fractured but use a c.t or mri scan to see if there's any issues within the brain. It sounds most likely thst you have mild concussion, however I'd never assess a head injury over messaging.

HamiltonCork · 21/11/2018 21:58

I think you should seek proper medical advice.

adaline · 21/11/2018 22:19

I've fractured my skull before. They don't really do anything. I got stitches for the wound and they kept me in overnight (I was only 11) for potential concussion but that was about it.

My mum was a nurse and removed my stitches at home two weeks later. I never had any follow-up appointments or check ups.

AlexaAmbidextra · 21/11/2018 22:31

I nearly knocked myself out last night - twice. First, putting on dressing gown in bathroom and caught the light cord with my arm. Cord has a heavy ‘pull’ on the end which swung up and hit me on the side of my head. Got into bed, was reading on my iPad while laying down and balancing iPad on my chest. Nodded off and dropped the iPad on my face. It bloody hurt and I thought it had broken my nose. 😄

WillChellam · 21/11/2018 22:33

IF theres a dent, you may have cracked your frontal bone (into the frontal sinus)

Any runny nose or bruising around the eyes? if not its unlikely to be a fracture.

bobstersmum · 21/11/2018 22:42

Am I the only one wondering what make of hairdryer it is?

TheChickenOfTruth · 21/11/2018 22:47

@WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit

Totally almost peed myself at the mental image. Sorry.

Chouetted · 21/11/2018 23:20

@Bobstersmum I was just coming on to ask that, I think I'd crack mine if I hit my head with it.

Mind you, I got mild concussion from an IKEA lampshade once. I wonder if I actually hit the lightbulb. I nearly fainted, in the middle of the bloody restaurant. Turns out to be a lot easier than you'd expect to damage your noggin Grin

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 21/11/2018 23:33

I shut the car boot on my head once and still have a dent. I saw stars too, I was more fascinated by that than my injury. Mine didn't hurt for that long though.

WhoWants2Know · 22/11/2018 02:26

I've also hit my head on the car boot at least twice now

Mysparklingpersonality · 22/11/2018 02:34

I'm glad I'm not the only person who seems to do themselves an injury all the time.
Have a low cupboard at work that have to duck coming in and out of. Made myself bleed once, one day I'll learn to bloody duck far enough 🤬
If you're concerned then speak to your GP surgery for advice, they'll point you in the right direction. I'm not a medical professional though so just my opinion! But if you've no other symptoms after 9 days I personally wouldn't bother unless it got more painful or I developed symptoms.

Shriek · 22/11/2018 02:43

I have a boot that split s in two horizontally, in my car.
I have opened both top glass and bottom and then stood up forgetting the top glass one, I thought I'd split my head in half right the top!! The pain of if nearly took me off my feet and I couldn't quite work out what had happened.
No eggs, no blood!
Then I did it again..and again!! Bloody hate it. When will I learn

justilou1 · 22/11/2018 02:43

I gave myself whiplash blowdrying my hair, so I think you win. I'd still get it checked out. The worst thing that could happen is that you could give the doctors a laugh. I hope you feel better. x

Shriek · 22/11/2018 02:43

I really would get it checked out.
