To serve Aunt Bessie’s Roast Potatoes with dinner instead of doing real ones?

Give it to me straight; AIBU? It’s slow roast shoulder of pork with nice veg and I even might make Yorkshire Puddings (real ones, from scratch), so it’s not as if I’m doing FA. I’ve had the Aunt Bessie’s in the freezer for a few months and am unsure as to whether they’ll be nice.
I’ve been a lazy fucker today, on my last day off work (I do six on, four off for reference, so you have all the facts to judge me properly), I’ve done the school run this morning and nipped to the shop, then I washed some rugs and fucked off for an afternoon nap, but I still can’t be properly arsed to cook.
Am I an unreasonable, lazy bastard?

they ARE roast potatoes though - and pretty decent.

NancyDonahue · 21/11/2018 16:29

As you already have them it would be wasteful to not use them. For that reason YANBU.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/11/2018 16:29

For a weeknight dinner, YANBU.

Xmas lunch would be a different matter.
Actually, when MIL still insisted on doing Xmas lunch when she was in her late 80s she did use Aunt Bessies spuds and parsnips, and while they weren't as good as the roasties she used to Male they were still enjoyable.

Calzone · 21/11/2018 16:29

No judgment

They are delicious.

You won’t regret them.

ACatsNoHelpWithThat · 21/11/2018 16:29

It's a midweek tea. Chill out.

firsttimemumma123 · 21/11/2018 16:31

Yes. You've gone to all that effort with the rest of the meal, the Aunt Bessie's would ruin it! (Providing you have goose fat to hand, proper roast potatoes are only made with goose fat!)
For reference, I'm about to go home from work and make tuna pasta bake from a sachet so I'm not one to judge on this occasion. Grin

WorraLiberty · 21/11/2018 16:31

If you like them then cook them

I like them but I have them instead of chips because as much as they're nice, they (to me) aren't anything like real roast potatoes.

Still lovely though

Rachelover40 · 21/11/2018 16:34

You can buy own brand roast potatoes, I do sometimes from Ocado or Waitrose. They don't look so perfectly shaped as Bessie's and there are fewer hard ones. Bash them about a bit and they are like your own.

FannyFanackerpants71 · 21/11/2018 16:35

They are delicious. I am a home made roasties fiend /snob, cutting them every kind of Nigella way and semolina coating the hell outta those babies! BUT... Aunt Bessie's are my go to brand when I'm in a hurry. Your dinner sounds lovely.... you have made your own gravy though right op? 😉

Justgivemesomepeace · 21/11/2018 16:37

I must be doing something wrong with my Aunt Bessies. They are always horribly dry and floury inside.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 21/11/2018 16:38

You're massively overthinking this Grin

Make the Aunt Bessies

HotSauceCommittee · 21/11/2018 16:39

Oh , yes I be makin’ me own gravy (fake West Country accent).
Thank you MN, I love AB’s parsnips, so it’s time to try the roasties. It’s really homemade apple sauce that I made a couple of weeks ago.
By the by, I’ve just peeled and chopped the chunkiest carrot; you should have seen the girth on it!

Wednesday supper are what Aunt Bessie’s were invented for. And surely roast potatoes are meant to be dry and floury on the inside? That’s how they serve their purpose of soaking up the gravy.

Oblomov18 · 21/11/2018 16:53

I like serving them for a mid week roast.
Agree that for Christmas Day its a no-no.

FannyFanackerpants71 · 21/11/2018 16:58

@HotSauceCommittee .whoa whoa... !!! We don't need to know about your carrots... too much information!

22Giraffes · 21/11/2018 16:59

How did I not know AB did parsnips?! You are def not BU to use the roasties, enjoy them, and your girthy carrot! Grin

Bowchicawowow · 21/11/2018 16:59

Nothing wrong with Aunt Bessie’s.

snaggletoothmoose · 21/11/2018 17:03

Yabu. Should definitely be using McCains Roasts. Beat Bessie's into a cocked hat, they do.

user187656748 · 21/11/2018 17:03

Personally think they're horrible but yes use them if you have them. The AB parsnips are amazing though.

BrieAndChilli · 21/11/2018 17:07

Surely you need to start making room in the freezer for xmas stuff?? That was my excuse last night when everyone had something different for tea as I was finishing up the odds and sods in the freezer where there wasn’t enough of something for all of us.

MrsJayy · 21/11/2018 17:10

I use Ab roasties instead of chips and her yorkshires both lovely life is too short to worry about whether to use frozen food or not

Notveryadventurousname · 21/11/2018 17:11

Always a dry, floury disappointment snd take loads longer to cook than the packet says. Try home-made mash with real butter instead.

HotSauceCommittee · 21/11/2018 17:16

Notveryadventurousname thanks for the tip. I’ll give them an extra ten minutes.
Funnily enough, after posting on here, I got them out, and Lo and behold, there was a “Mumsnet rated” thing printed on them.
I’m giving them a go. I’ll let you know how it goes later.

Get them used up, you may as well!

I have had a few difficult Christmases due to serious family ill health. After years of doing a carefully prepared dinner, I've discovered that Lidl goosefat roast taters and parsnips are fantastic and make the day much simpler.

Frozen turkey crown in a bag is perfectly acceptable too. I've always brined my turkey and made everything from scratch, but actually Christmas of all days can cope with a short cut!

Athena51 · 21/11/2018 17:23

I think they are really nice and I'm a keen cook who prides herself on her roasties Smile. Sometimes it's just easier to bung in some frozen ones.
