To panic about not taking folic acid one day in hospital?

shouldidoitspoilt · 20/11/2018 23:23

Is that ok?
I'm in being treated for HG and I haven't taken it today
I'm far away from nurses station and won't see anyone for a few hours I don't think
Is it ok to not have it for one night
I'm panicking because I'm not keeping food down and I worry about the minerals for a baby
I always manage to keep the folic acid so this would be the first time really in about two weeks since I didn't take it and that was about 3/4 times it didn't stay down ?

I'm sure it will make absolutely no difference. I'm sure the majority of mums to be forget it a few times! Try not to worry.

altiara · 20/11/2018 23:27

It’s fine, don’t worry!

Danteinferno · 20/11/2018 23:28

I didn’t know I was pregnant with my first until 10 weeks so didn’t take any ... he’s a very healthy 6 yr old

Currently feeding my 5 month old who I did take some but definitely forgot some days ... he’s fine too. Don’t worry if you forget the odd one

DisneyMillie · 20/11/2018 23:29

It will be absolutely fine - millions of people across the world have perfectly healthy babies having never taken it. It’s great to have it but missing a few really won’t matter.

needsanewname · 20/11/2018 23:30

Made me feel sick so I stopped taking them way before 12 weeks. DD is a very happy, lively and chunky 4 month old now.

shouldidoitspoilt · 20/11/2018 23:31

Thank you all these answers are so reassuring
I feel like I haven't given the best nutrition as not much has stayed down
When I do eat it's healthy so I'm hoping I am doing enough
I'll take the folic acid tomorrow when I'm home xx

I didn't take it on either of mine. There very healthy and intelligent 13 and 10 year olds now.

LadyMisty · 20/11/2018 23:32

Verbena87 · 20/11/2018 23:36

Oh crikey, don’t fret! I didn’t have HG but pretty bad morning sickness and lost enough weight in my first trimester for the consultant to tell me I was at risk of a low birthweight baby (basically was living on thin slices of Granny Smith apple for about 2 months, and definitely missed/threw up the odd folic acid tablet too) - he was 10lb9oz on arrival and is thriving. They take what they need - it’s mums who suffer!!

Lindtnotlint · 20/11/2018 23:39

One REALLY doesn’t matter. Honestly. This is the madness of pregnancy speaking. Take one tomorrow. And try to relax. SmileSmileSmile

shouldidoitspoilt · 20/11/2018 23:44

It is insane how much we worry isn't it

They want to scan me and the anxious part of me doesn't want a scan because I don't want to know if it's not going to plan.

But I know the outcome can't be changed.
It's probably the exhaustion making me feel bad as well

One won't hurt.
I remember having D&V in the very early days of my first pregnancy. My Mum said, don't worry, the baby is a parasite and will take what it needs you'll be the one going without. I found that strangely comforting.Confused

thaegumathteth · 21/11/2018 00:00

It’s fine.

I had HG with ds - he was and is fine. I felt like shite but he was fine!

plaidlife · 21/11/2018 00:05

mumw my consultant obstetrician said exactly the same thing to me when I was worried that I losing and not gaining weight. My pair were decent weights for twins and she was right, they just stripped whatever they needed from me.

PyongyangKipperbang · 21/11/2018 00:05

It wasnt until I stopped taking it because I ran out that I realised the FA was making me very sick. That was in my second pregnancy. All 6 of my kids are fine.

Unicyclethief · 21/11/2018 00:06

I thought it was just as important to take it before you even get pregnant anyway, but many people only start when they are pregnant. So not taking some at this stage won’t even make a difference.

RaininSummer · 21/11/2018 00:07

Folic acid wasn't a thing when I had my two children so I doubt missing a day will matter at all.

shouldidoitspoilt · 21/11/2018 00:22

@RaininSummer I was taking it before I got pregnant too

PedunculatedPolp · 21/11/2018 00:42

I am nearly 40 and none of our parents took folic acid and we are ok. The risk is only around 1 in 4000 if you haven't taken folic acid at all. You have taken it so the risk is lower anyway. I hope you feel better soon. X

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 21/11/2018 03:21

I had HG in both my pregnancies and folic acid made me very sick so I stopped taking it early on. There was no point as it wasn't staying down anyway. Both DC are absolutely fine.

Caprisunorange · 21/11/2018 03:24

Oh bless you OP. I’m often too sick to take it or throw it up so I’m amazed you’ve kept it up with HG. Well done!

Rachelover40 · 21/11/2018 05:02

For goodness sake, one day is not going to make much difference.

I do feel sympathetic about your HG though, it must be terrible. You're a brave girl. I hope you are stabilised soon [flowers[.

KingIrving · 21/11/2018 05:37

Folic acid prevents birth defects when taken between the 21st and 27th day of pregnancy. So you missing one dose now won’t make any difference.
Folate also helps with cell division and reproduction but again missing a dose or even a week is not an issue.

Verbena87 · 21/11/2018 09:52

Hope if you have been scanned OP it’s been all good and has reassured you. Even just good old big-standard morning sickness floored me, so you have all my sympathy. Flowers
