Taxi to A&E

I'm 7 months pregnant and this evening I fell down the stairs, I hit my head quite hard and I've hurt my right leg and shoulder. My partner is working abroad this week so I'm home alone.
I didn't feel it was urgent enough to call an ambulance, so I called a taxi and asked them take me to A&E. When the taxi driver arrived they completely refused to take me!! AIBU to think that they should have taken me?

HmmmHmm

sanpelle · 21/11/2018 13:42

Ugh keep posting to fast today! I don't understand why they wouldn't take you! Any taxi driver that turns away a pregnant woman is a disgrace in my eyes. I've had this before but with Uber and they are awful. I brought a towel to sit on as I was heavily miscarrying and later found out I had an infection. The Uber refused and I got charged for the cancellation. Never used them since. Hope you're okay op!Thanks

Chouetted · 21/11/2018 13:58

Good job you went in in the end!

By the way, chest and ankle X-rays are really low doses, so don't worry about that. It's less radiation exposure than living in Cornwall!

Meralia · 21/11/2018 14:30

Hope you recover soon. I wasn’t trying to insinuate anything about the X-rays. I had to have one too, and also had a lead apron, although it was a bit gapey at the sides as I was huge!

SlowDown76mph · 21/11/2018 14:53

I doubt if your employer would be happy to see you back at work and in plaster so soon - not necessarily from compassion (!) - but because of their own duty of care/potential liability. Haven't you been signed off as unfit for work?

PartyPie · 21/11/2018 15:29

I haven't really spoken to my manager yet other than to say that I won't been in today. I do need to ring her this afternoon though (I've been putting it off!). I am hoping I can have at least Thursday and Friday off purely because it would just be so awkward to get into the office. Is it even normal to have time off for a broken ankle?!

OP posts:
CynthiaRothrock · 21/11/2018 15:32

I would say yed it is normal to have time off for a broken ankle. And they need to risk asses before you go back to work, emergancy exit routes, toilet access etc. Hope you feel better soon x

Weetabixandshreddies · 21/11/2018 15:36

Will you even be able to travel to work? Obviously you won't be able to drive and I doubt a combination of heavily pregnant/leg in plaster/crutches is a good match for public transport?

BlitheringIdiots · 21/11/2018 15:37

I wouldn't expect my 7 month pregnant employee who has broken ribs and broken ankle to come to work and I run a small business. Stay home and self certify. Take care

TwittleBee · 21/11/2018 15:42

certainly stay home after that ordeal!

I am so sorry that taxi driver refused to take you but glad an ambulance was sent in the end.

With DS I had to go to hospital multiple times whilst pregnant and the Taxi companies (yes, various) were all so considerate and actually when I said I needed to go to A&E or to the Antenatal Triage over the phone they always said they would prioritise my call. Maybe its just lucky that their insurances covers it? idk.

Anyway, rest up and good luck!

meow1989 · 21/11/2018 15:44

I had 8 weeks off when I broke mine 2 years ago! But my job did involve lots of driving

howabout · 21/11/2018 16:05

Glad you got there in the end. Flowers

Your body is already doing a lot of work building a baby. It needs nothing but R&R given it is also now in the bone mending business. Also be aware that all bones and joints are more flexible during pregnancy, so if you do more than necessary you are likely to injure something else.

Stay at home with your feet up.

I am bored out my box with a rigid full leg brace for a cracked tibia - doubt I could get in a taxi if I tried. Took a couple of days for the adrenaline to escape and the tiredness to catch up with me. Doubt you would be much good at work anyway.

PartyPie · 21/11/2018 16:25

Ok so maybe I'm not actually being as pathetic as I thought I was! I could potentially get there next week as my partner will be back and we could probably make his hours work with dropping me off and picking me up. Hmmm, I'm going to ring my manager now and see what she says.
howabout I hope your leg is better soon

I'm so pleased you called 111 & accepted an ambulance, you must have been in so much pain!

Rest up & take care of yourself. Have you got anyone to help with meals etc till DP comes home?

PartyPie · 21/11/2018 18:53

Thank you Flower. No, I don't have anyone around but I'm sure I'll be fine, I'm not worried Smile

Thank god you plucked up the courage to call the ambulance - so sorry to hear of your injuries 💐
Agree with others, you should certainly be resting up and taking it easy. If I was your boss I would definitely understand the circumstances and would never expect to see you in work for a couple of weeks. (Yes, you might be able to hobble about with a broken ankle, but broken ribs as well!!, and pregnant!). Get a doctor to sign you off work and take things slowly.

Definitely report the taxi driver - his behaviour was ridiculous!

Vonvon222 · 21/11/2018 20:15

Did your ribs feel sore?
I broke 3 ribs once, it was the worst pain ever.

TheDarkPassenger · 21/11/2018 20:18

I got in a taxi in labour waters gone the lot! I couldn’t exactly bloody drive myself there he was about sticking out of my foof! How ridiculous!

If you didn’t tell him why you’re going I’d complain and say you were in a rush to see a family member

TheDarkPassenger · 21/11/2018 20:19

Oh I see the thread has moved along I didn’t realise there were more pages 🤦🏻‍♀️

Rest up op hope you’re okay

Natsku · 21/11/2018 20:33

Glad you got to the hospital in the end, I do hope you complain about the taxi driver as that wasn't on. And don't worry about the x-rays, it's just a precaution to avoid them during pregnancy but when they are needed then they are needed - I had lots of abdominal ones while pregnant with DD and she is perfectly healthy (no cool radioactive super powers either though)

GinandGingerBeer · 22/11/2018 00:00

Don't be daft Smile
Surely nobody expects you to go into work with broken ribs and a broken ankle when you're 7 months pregnant! Stay home, rest up, watch box sets and do internet shopping for Xmas. That's an order! Wink

RichSheffield · 22/11/2018 02:17

Definitely complain about that taxi driver! What awful logic: 'you're pregnant and I think there is a risk of you becoming very unwell therefore I'm going to refuse to take you to hospital and leave you on your own...'

Danteinferno · 22/11/2018 11:17

@sanpelle that’s awful! I was miscarrying once started while I was walking home from a friends very sudden on my own sat on the floor waiting for an ambulance to come and anlovely man stopped who was a taxi driver and said if he hadn’t have had a drink in the pub I was net he’d have got his taxi and taken me straight away. He stayed with me until ten ambulance came holding my hand and I’ve never forgotten how kind he was

Chocaholic27 · 22/11/2018 22:42

How are you feeling today?
