Taxi to A&E

I'm 7 months pregnant and this evening I fell down the stairs, I hit my head quite hard and I've hurt my right leg and shoulder. My partner is working abroad this week so I'm home alone.
I didn't feel it was urgent enough to call an ambulance, so I called a taxi and asked them take me to A&E. When the taxi driver arrived they completely refused to take me!! AIBU to think that they should have taken me?

I've settled on the sofa now (no way I'm going to be getting up again any time soon!) so if everything isn't ok in the morning I will give my GP a ring.

But nothing has changed since you rang the taxi. You should go and get checked out.

Is there a friend or family member that can take you?

EricTheGuineaPig · 20/11/2018 21:02

I know 111 in Wales can organise patient transport - might be worth ringing them for advice and they could possibly advise you on transport too?

EricTheGuineaPig · 20/11/2018 21:02

I meant ringing 111 where ever you are to see if they do the same!

PrincessConsuelaBannanaHammock · 20/11/2018 21:04

If you've hit your head and your dp isn't there to keep an eye on you I really think you would be best being seen tonight, don't wait until the morning. Ring another taxi or ring 111 at least for advice

PartyPie · 20/11/2018 21:04

Just a bit nervous about calling 111 as I know they will send an ambulance and I don't want to waste their resources

I will see if I can find a phone number for one of my neighbours, unfortunately we have no family members who live nearby

Just phone 111 stop being silly.

LIZS · 20/11/2018 21:08

111 may well send a paramedic car to assess you rather than ambulance.

naicepineapple · 20/11/2018 21:09

I wouldn't be so sure that 111 would send an ambulance. I broke my ankle and leg in 4 places (requiring 2 surgeries so far) and they told me to make my own way. I spent another night at home in agony before I could get in (couldn't hop or crawl as was in so much pain). The nurse that saw me was furious with them and said I should have dialled 999 🤷🏼‍♀️

Call another taxi.

Hmm

111 are qualified to decide what it a waste of resources.

Why are people so ridiculous on here about seeking proper medical advice?!!

Sweetpotatoaddict · 20/11/2018 21:12

If 111 triage you and want to send an ambulance then it isn’t a waste of resources.

Bigonesmallone3 · 20/11/2018 21:13

I would want my baby checked!

Fridaydreamer · 20/11/2018 21:13

Call a different taxi firm. Ask them to drop you at A&E as you’re ‘visiting’ someone whose been taken in. Just to avoid the aggro in case the next firm is weird.

Don’t let there weird refusal stop you looking after yourself and your baby.

Weezol · 20/11/2018 21:14

111 won't necessarily send you an ambulance. If they feel it's necessary you are assessed they could send an FRU (paramedic in a car) to check you over at home. Paremedics do a lot of 'on the spot' stuff and have all sorts of monitors in their kit and might think it's not necessary to take you in.

Ambulance no longer = immediate trip to hospital. Paramedics are incredibly skilled and won't make unnecessary admissions. They do a lot of treatment and investigations in my living room!

Both you and the baby need to be checked over. Please call 111.

Bleurgh0 · 20/11/2018 21:17

This.

And they may assess you and say you don't need to go to hospital. Or they may say you do. Either way you are not wasting resources.

If you don't go you're neglecting your baby.

Flowerpot2005 · 20/11/2018 21:17

Stop being so ridiculously thoughtful.

You're alone, you've had a hard knock to the head & have hurt your leg. You're also pregnant, ring 111. You have a responsibility to yourself & your baby.

As you're alone, should you take a turn for the worse, who is going to assist you if can't help yourself due to the injuries. You have totally valid reasons for calling & if they deem you need an ambulance, so be it.

Magair · 20/11/2018 21:20

Do you know your blood group? If you are rhesus negative then you will probably need an injection. Go in.

GlitteryFluff · 20/11/2018 21:21

Can you call a different taxi firm?
I used taxis to get to and from hospital whilst pregnant a lot and was never refused.

Parisbun · 20/11/2018 21:25

Why is this ?

Chouetted · 20/11/2018 21:29

111 sent me a taxi once (I live in Wales like a PP), as I urgently needed to be seen but didn't need an ambulance, and obviously was incapable of teleporting to A&E. No difficulty as of course the taxi driver knew where I was going!

If they send an ambulance instead, that's entirely on them.

PartyPie · 20/11/2018 21:29

Thanks all for your concern - I didn't mean to cause worry, I just wanted to ask your thoughts about the taxi driver!
I've seen sense and I'm going to call 111, so, worry not.

Please let us know

Fridaydreamer · 20/11/2018 21:34

Lol I’m rhesus negative. Only injections are to do with babies blood type crossing over during delivery and that injection was after delivery and are proactive against issues in future pregnancies. Think you’re mixed up on that one.

notapizzaeater · 20/11/2018 21:35

Glad you've rang 111

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 20/11/2018 21:41

Not mixed up at all. I am RH neg too. The reason you have the injections is to stop your body creating anti-bodies to attack your baby's blood cells if they are not rh negative. This only happens if there is sufficient cross over of the blood - major risk factors are birth and miscarriage, hence you are given them as a precaution in pregnancy - but another huge risk is a fall or a knock to the stomach. If you're rh neg and have not had the injection yet and experience a fall, you need anti-d asap. Rhesus syndrome is very dangerous.
