To wish 'Black Friday' would disappear back to the USA

Does anyone actually want it? Gets on my nerves. Just seems an excuse to send a gazillion new emails and being cynical I doubt there will be great discounts at all.

It's just sales isn't it? So things being sold for less money... Can't get worked up about it

nikkylou · 20/11/2018 20:15

I know what you mean. It's always dubious as to whether things are the best price, and it's extended over a week / fortnight / month.
It makes me feel I'm missing out when I haven't frittered 100s on stuff, I sort of justified that I needed.
I never seem to see the stuff I really want on offer.

CandyCreeper · 20/11/2018 20:17

i dont get why its now basically all november, though some prices definitely are cheaper.

bringbackthestripes · 20/11/2018 20:18

YANBU. I hope we never get to the point where people are trampling other shoppers for some gadget they don’t need just because it’s a few quid off.

Heatherjayne1972 · 20/11/2018 20:27

yanbu

dawnacorns · 20/11/2018 20:32

Yes I feel like it's now all November too Candy - not even sure when the Friday in question is Confused

toffee1000 · 20/11/2018 20:34

It’s the day after Thanksgiving which is the last Thursday in November, I believe.

LEMtheoriginal · 20/11/2018 20:36

I don't even consider it a thing

StealthPolarBear · 20/11/2018 20:38

This is the first year I've noticed the black Friday sale... Ends on Monday. Incredibly irritating

MrsStrowman · 20/11/2018 20:38

Meh we just got the baby monitor we've been wanting for half price in the Mothercare black Friday preview, it's just a sale. Key is to not buy anything you weren't looking to buy anyway or you haven't really saved anything

dawnacorns · 20/11/2018 20:41

Thanks toffee
What's the betting that within a couple of years we will be expected to celebrate thanksgiving as well.

Sales are such a year-round thing nowadays, I honestly think paying full price for anything is a bad idea unless the purchase can't wait.

The small print for sale items is often enlightening:

£259.99 was £299.99 *

*Higher price charged in selected stores from 01.09.2018 - 14.09.2018.

fieldgold · 20/11/2018 20:45

Do you absolutely need it, or do you just want it because it is cheap.

Well that's the way I work it out.

Less is more usually.

MrsStrowman · 20/11/2018 20:46

I think it's anything to try and prop up the dying retail industry in all honesty, rather than Americanisation. This only came about post crash

FitzChivalryFarseer · 20/11/2018 20:47

I do generally agree. Except that I got DH a half price bean to cup coffee machine a couple of years ago, which gets used every single day. I had already researched what model and the RRP, so knew I was getting a genuine bargain.

This year, I have got myself a KitchenAid Cooking Chef, which I have been wanting for years. They are normally around £1100. Between the BF week discount of £400 and some gift vouchers from work for high performance, I got it for under £300.

If you know what you want and what you are prepared to pay, you can get some good deals. Just don’t get sucked into buying for the sake of buying.

fieldgold · 20/11/2018 20:47

The creeping American way is disquieting for me.

I hope we keep our regional accents if nothing else.

HelenaDove · 20/11/2018 20:57

Its Black Fortnight not Black Friday!

Nenic · 20/11/2018 20:59

Don’t know why it bothers people. You aren’t forced to by anything. I’m glad of a good deal before Christmas tbh

Jaxtellerswife · 20/11/2018 20:59

It's great, it really helped us with Christmas last year and has to an extent this year.
If something makes things a little easier for people I really can't moan about it

ForalltheSaints · 20/11/2018 21:01

YANBU. We do not celebrate Thanksgiving, so should not have so-called Black Friday. We are not the 51st state.

OhFlipMama · 20/11/2018 21:02

I don't know why we have it, but I am glad for the amazon dot thing being cheaper than usual!

Jackshouse · 20/11/2018 21:02

There was an article on the bbc news this morning about a which? report which found that most Black Friday deals were cheaper in the summer months.

MrsChollySawcutt · 20/11/2018 21:05

Meh, I'm not going to sniff at a discount things I would have bought for Christmas anyway. I had some Boden clothes for DS in my shopping basket and saved 30% by ordering them today instead of yesterday. Many thanks to the poster who gave the heads up in that!

What I don't like are the fake offers where it looks like you are getting a big discount but you aren't really. I bought a soda steam kit for the family yesterday for £79. Black Friday offer today is selling the exact same kit for £76 claiming it's a 50% discount and is usually £145. So actually it's £3 off. Woo.

PersonaNonGarter · 20/11/2018 21:06

It gives me an uneasy feeling of ... being a mug. Either I am a mug for buying at full price, or a mug for buying at sale price and believing I am getting a bargain.

UtterlyDesperate · 20/11/2018 21:06

The worst thing about it is that it's before payday...
