To wish 'Black Friday' would disappear back to the USA

Does anyone actually want it? Gets on my nerves. Just seems an excuse to send a gazillion new emails and being cynical I doubt there will be great discounts at all.

I dont mind it. I bought all my DD nursery furniture and full travel system on a ridiculous black friday offer last year. My travel system never went that cheap again (it worked out to 62% off).

Amazon does do some incredibly good black friday offers.

I find im able to get xmas shopping done a lot earlier rather than just relying on December wage to do it!

FitzChivalryFarseer · 20/11/2018 21:15

The worst thing about it is that it's before payday...

I get paid on the 15th of the month.

Our Black Friday doesn't bear any resemblance to the USA's though, does it? I think it's like a one day extravaganza sale there, attached to the Thanksgiving national holiday, when a lot of people take a day's annual leave on the Friday to make a long weekend. Do they have a prolonged Black Friday period over there? I don't get the impression that they do, but my thinking might be very out of date.

Here it's essentially an early start to what used to be the January sale, which then became the Boxing Day sale, and is now the run up to advent and through to the New Year sale. It's more of a plod than a dash to the sales.

MakeAHouseAHome · 20/11/2018 21:31

Sorry but going against the grain here. I prepare for the sales online - put things we need/want etc. And presents I plan to bit for people into various online shopping baskets, logon first thing Black Friday and see what has crashed in price and buy it if it has.

We have just moved home and have SO much stuff we need. Already saved £250 on a TV we were going to buy but I persuaded my Partner to wait and it came down in the Currys Black Friday (or rather Black Friday week...) sales.

Who doesn't want to save money if it is something they would buy anyway Hmm

steff13 · 20/11/2018 21:34

It’s the day after Thanksgiving which is the last Thursday in November, I believe.

It's the fourth Thursday. Usually that's the last Thursday, but this year there are five Thursdays in November, so it's the day after tomorrow.

fieldgold · 20/11/2018 22:14

If you need it and can get a bargain then go for it.

The issue is that people buy what they don't actually need because it looks like a bargain.

But that's advertising and consumerism.

But each to their own.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 20/11/2018 22:33

I usually avoid like the plague (I'm usually the droid prepping for the shopper stampede, which rather kills it) but I need a new vacuum so needs probably must.

IHopeThisIsAGoodIdea · 20/11/2018 22:39

What's wrong with Black Friday? 🤔

IHopeThisIsAGoodIdea · 20/11/2018 22:44

I mean...it's not like it's hurting anyone.

It was on the news earlier. Certain items marked as Black Friday bargains had been significantly less earlier in the year. It's nothing but a massive retail con to avoid the pre christmas slump in sales.

NaiceShoes · 20/11/2018 22:51

I don't even consider it a thing

Exactly. Same here. I just ignore the numerous emails. Who even goes to actual shops to shop these days?! Who has time? Confused

RibbonAurora · 20/11/2018 23:17

It's this Friday, day after TG, and like every other year since I've lived here in the USA, I'll be giving the traffic and the stampeded shops a miss and staying home to do nothing except watch crappy movies on tv and snooze off the excessive amounts of turkey, pumpkin pie and other goodies I'll have eaten at TG dinner. Will do the majority of my Christmas shopping online on Cyber Monday.

busybarbara · 20/11/2018 23:42

It's fantastic. Don't you remember the old days? Everything was more expensive in the run up to Christmas and the big sales were in January. Now we get sales before Xmas which is fab. I do find the name a bit racist though.

MarcieBluebell · 20/11/2018 23:50

Black Friday is a load of shite. There are good deals all year round. Most of the stuff I want isn't in the sale. Most of the stuff has been reduced to similar prices prior to this. Lots of prices are unchanged but have black Friday written on top.

pallisers · 21/11/2018 00:04

Is it really a thing? Or just an advertisement thing.

Black Friday isn't even much of a thing here in the US anymore. 20 years ago when I moved here people really would go out to get bargains/do their christmas shopping the day after thanksgiving. It was like the 8th of December in Ireland - traditional day of christmas shopping.

Maybe some people do still but most people I know do something entirely different - eat more turkey, go for a hike, go to a game.

Pretty shit to have the black friday hype without the lovely thanksgiving dinner though.

RibbonAurora · 21/11/2018 01:25

Racist? No, it's a financial thing for retailers as getting themselves I the the black in the run up to Christmas. It is kinda meaningless in the UK as a pp notes, Thanksgiving is an official holiday here in the USA and most places of work extend that to include Friday so many have a 4 day weekend. It marks the kick off to the Christmas Holidays and because most people aren't working, BF is the official start to the Christmas shopping season for retailers who take advantage of it to entice people out to spend. The mark downs on goods are basically loss leaders to get people into the stores and spending.

MrWolfknowsthetime · 21/11/2018 01:28

It has been deliberately extended beyond the one day to avoid the chaos, traffic problems, queues and fist fights that were occurring when it first started.

gotmybigbootson · 21/11/2018 01:34

Black Friday here (states) actually means there are huge discounts on things.

I got the bollock I had my eye l. For ages for $150 less and a rug I'd been wanting for $300 less!

Tomorrow a bunch of stuff I want to get ds for Christmas is 60% off, can't really moan about that!

I wouldn't go out shopping though. F that.

gotmybigbootson · 21/11/2018 01:34

Roomba not bollock!!!

Snipples · 21/11/2018 01:41

Best typo ever! 🤣 glad you got your discounted bollock! Never pay full price for a bollock ladies!

SenecaFalls · 21/11/2018 02:08

"Black" is an accounting reference. In the black (ink) as opposed to in the red, so making a profit.

HelenaDove · 21/11/2018 02:13

YY @MrWolfknowsthetime Some retail workers got badly injured the first year of it if i recall correctly.

HowOftenDoYouClean · 21/11/2018 02:15

The discounts we get in this country are laughable compared to the discounts Americans get. I really don't understand the hype in this country when they're so paltry.

Weezol · 21/11/2018 02:30

Just the one bollock? You've been had, there should be two per package.
