This isn't just sexism, this is M&S sexism

Marks and Spencer's window display. The 'must have' for men is "outfits to impress" , for women it's "fancy little knickers", Men must dress powerfully and impress in their suits, women must look sexy in their "little knickers".

Are M & S being unreasonable? I think so.

Belinda I am a bit of a brand addict and wear the signature Calvin Klein sporty pants with the thick white wasteband, very comfy. I wear what makes me comfy, there are some stylish comfy underwear about, without it looking like granny knickers.

N0b0dysMot · 20/11/2018 17:06

Awful. Some will shrug but i think they have responsibikity as a big company

ClaryFray · 20/11/2018 17:10

Oh fuck off.

Want to get offended about something try the teenage girl who's rapists been let of because she wore lacy underwear so was clearly gaggin for it. Oh and his defence lawyar a women... Pick a real problem of the world.

Not some made up injustice in your head. Get a grip!

NigelGresley · 20/11/2018 17:13

Presumably M&S are trying to secure their place in the declining high street?

Aeroflotgirl · 20/11/2018 17:16

Yes it was very bad form to advertise this at the same time as this rape trial whereas a women's underwear was used against her. The messages seem to be towards women and girls wear sexy underwear, but it may be used against you if you are raped or sexually assaulted. I tried sexy thongs when I was younger but 2 hours in, I had to take them off as they were very uncomfy. I don't know why some women like them. I do like my comfy undwerwear and ignore all messages and wear what I want, but some people especially teenagers are influenced by these marketing messages.

3timeslucky · 20/11/2018 17:18

FWIW the M&S near me has the same tagline in the window and both female and male mannequins are fully clothed. Not a mention of anyone's knickers. And that's in Ireland. (I'm not entirely sure if that's relevant but since the recent court case here has been brought up so many times I thought I'd mention it).

I’m sorry you don’t have the capacity to consider more than one issue. Most of us can manage that quite well.

Lweji · 20/11/2018 17:52

I’m sorry you don’t have the capacity to consider more than one issue.

This, but also, and importantly, how they are related.

I wonder what the fuck off was for.

Pickupthephone · 20/11/2018 19:15

If there’s one thing worse than blatant sexism, it’s the self-styled ‘cool girls’ who try to pretend it isn’t there.

‘If i pretend to be cool and one of the boys, maybe they’ll like me!’

You absolute bloody hypocrite. There is nothing more sexist on this thread than you claiming that women who disagree with you are brainless bongos with no thoughts and opinions who are just trying to impress men.

That is far more offensive and sexist than anything M&S have done.

Gingerrogered · 20/11/2018 19:37

This shit is completely fucking Kafkaesque, people trolling up and down highstreets looking for shops to denounce for wrongthink because they've committed a thought crime which goes against some sort of unwritten, made up rules that are constantly changing to give them more ammunition to denounce them with.

It's downright sinister lynch mob behaviour.

randomonhere · 20/11/2018 19:41

I think it’s awful and I speak as someone who loves lingerie (not from M&S admittedly). This shop repeatedly astounds me. I have no idea who signs this kind of display off, nor who signs off the hideous clothes that are actually inside. Does anyone remember that hideous pink nylon dress that was their key season piece not long ago? It’s staggering, as are so many of the clothes. I was also annoyed that they are selling school uniform hijabs for 4 year olds.
I do shop in there for food, but frankly I’ve had enough. I will have to boycott this ridiculous shop from now on. My mum likes M&S vouchers, but I’ll just get her John Lewis instead.

What utter fucking ridiculous hyperbole

Haffdonga · 20/11/2018 19:54

Whether or not you're offended by this, what's staggering is M&S's total idiocy to actually think this was a good plan to appeal to the modern female buyer.

Who the fuck actually signed this particular idea off?

Aeroflotgirl · 20/11/2018 19:58

Well so shit Ginger that a rape victim was blamed for the undweare (similar to M&S) she was wearing.

Lweji · 20/11/2018 20:32

@Gingerrogered
You ok, hun?

Lweji · 20/11/2018 20:33

It's as if Gingerrogered works for M&S's window dressing team.

Although to be honest, the thing that baffles me the most is how anyone can hear the phrase ‘fancy little knickers’ without wanting to hurl in their mouth.

Newsheet · 20/11/2018 21:13

Not read the whole thread so sorry if someone has ready pointed it out.....but there is apparently more of the window out of shot , including the dress to impress section for women.

Lweji · 20/11/2018 21:24

I'm sure there is.
What comes across as ill thought out and sexist are the two strikingly different windows next to each other.

It smacks of those old picnic in the park paintings with the fully dressed men and the naked woman.

Any major store should have considered how it looked like.
Still, where are the photos of the full windows by M&S as reply to this photo? I'd love to see them.

Gingerrogered · 21/11/2018 03:16

lweji, the women's 'dress to impress' with women wearing suits and workwear were cropped out of the photograph just so someone could get the thrill of making an denouncement.

Lweji · 21/11/2018 03:39

Has it? I haven't seen anything about it.

M&S have said
"We've highlighted one combination in our windows, which are part of a wider campaign that features a large variety of Must-Have Christmas moments, from David Gandy washing up in an M&S suit through to families snuggling up in our matching PJs."
Which suggests this window includes only these two sides.
It would have been easy for them to show the entire window if there's more.
So, if there's more, still poorly handled.

WitchyMcWitchface · 21/11/2018 09:36

t's downright sinister lynch mob behaviour
Which a multinational company with million pound advertising budget should have known about.
Keep the frilly red thongs out of the high street window please M&S. Maybe they understand that better.

ToastWithHoney · 21/11/2018 11:55

Were the male mannequins wearing 'fancy little pants' also cropped out?

No? I thought not.

Btw I don't think the women's 'dress to impress' that was allegedly cropped out was suits, the shot I saw was casual wear.
