This isn't just sexism, this is M&S sexism

Marks and Spencer's window display. The 'must have' for men is "outfits to impress" , for women it's "fancy little knickers", Men must dress powerfully and impress in their suits, women must look sexy in their "little knickers".

Are M & S being unreasonable? I think so.

OP posts:
CoughLaughFart · 19/11/2018 22:58

For fuck’s sake.

SneakyGremlins · 19/11/2018 23:00

What if I want fancy knickers? Am I banned from them? Sad

In all seriousness this ridiculous.

ClickyJoints · 19/11/2018 23:00

Especially if you consider how the underwear worn by the victim has been used as evidence in recent rape trials....

onthenaughtystepagain · 19/11/2018 23:01

Glad your life leaves plenty of space for getting uptight about such trivia!

Babdoc · 19/11/2018 23:05

They are possibly doing it deliberately, hoping to generate a storm of outrage, on the basis that any publicity is good publicity. Especially when it’s free.
Personally, I’d vote with my feet and shop elsewhere. Their clothes have been so crap for years, I usually only go in there for food - and even that is rarely now I’m retired, and have time to go to independent shops and farmers’ markets etc.

Sparkyduchess · 19/11/2018 23:05

In light of the outcome of the rape case in Ireland alone, this is shocking.

Even without that it’s misogynistic and regressive.

Onthenaughtystep - many of us find we can think about several things at one time, give it a try.

cindersrella · 19/11/2018 23:08

Are you sure you not reading a little to much into things 🙀

hamblehumpty · 19/11/2018 23:08

Oh perleease - I love sexy nicks - I buy sexy nicks (admittedly not from M&S cos they're rank)

Absolutely sick to death of the habitually offended - get a life ffs

Absolute rubbish. That single case in Ireland is abhorrent. As a woman wearing skimpy knickers it abstemiously is not the norm - vile

hamblehumpty · 19/11/2018 23:12

sorry, that should be absolutely

Sparkyduchess · 19/11/2018 23:32

Of course you can wear skimpy knickers, it’s the contrast in aspiration between ‘outfits to impress’ for men, and ‘fancy little knickers’ for women that grates.

CoughLaughFart · 19/11/2018 23:35

At no point has M&S said women can’t buy ‘outfits to impress’ too. It’s one window display.

Lalliella · 19/11/2018 23:41

Agree with OP and Sparky. It’s sexist and depressing. M&S the 1970s are calling - they want their window display back Angry

MrsTerryPratcett · 19/11/2018 23:42

It might be one window. But scantily clad women and men fully clothed with all the power is kind of a theme. I mean are there really lots of campaigns and windows full of cute men in speedos surrounded by women in pant suits?

ButchyRestingFace · 20/11/2018 00:31

Actually, I agree with you, OP.

Unfortunately it won't stop me from shopping at M & S. I have no standards.

SemperIdem · 20/11/2018 00:35

Yanbu

catkind · 20/11/2018 00:51

I was more worried that I couldn't find simple jeans in there without them claiming to "shape and lift" my bum. Online searching suggests normal jeans do exist but they weren't in evidence.

AGHHHH · 20/11/2018 02:15

Maybe they're doing a 60s inspired window display?

Clutches at straws

LeekingPotato · 20/11/2018 02:19

I'd be curious to know if those are the only two sections of the window display, but it doesn't look great in that image.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 20/11/2018 02:37

This tweet by Poorboy on the link sums it up:

Replying to @FiLiA_charity @marksandspencer
Must haves - dresses with pockets, jeans that are comfy to wear, tights that last more than 3 washes/wears, jumpers that don’t shrink, [a] well cut dress coat that doesn’t need heels to look right. HIGH STREET RETAILERS WHO AREN’T MAKING SEXIST FALSE EQUIVALENCES @marksandspencer

YANBU OP - am surprised so many are trivialising it but it does explain why sexism keeps running on!

claraschu · 20/11/2018 03:02

Revolting window displays!

To be fair to the 60s and 70s, I don't think this would have been seen in a respectable window display back then. Not because of the obvious sexism, perhaps, but It would have been considered pornographic, wouldn't it?

Rachelover40 · 20/11/2018 03:25

I like the advert and have no problem with 'fancy little knickers' as they are advertising several items of which that is just one.

CoalTit · 20/11/2018 03:35

M&S sexism? It's part of a matrix of sexism we're all soaking in.
Then a rapist's lawyer holds up his victim's "fancy little knickers" as evidence that she was looking for it, and he gets off. Some of us can see the relation; others get all huffy that you should notice what's going on and try to talk about it.

MemoryOfSleep · 20/11/2018 04:06

I think I've seen another thread about this. Hang on:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3428370-To-be-livid-at-Marks-Spencers-sexism-Women-Must-Have-Fancy-Little-Knickers

Admittedly, yours has a far better title. I think it's the juxtaposition of 'clothes to impress' for men and 'fancy little knickers' for women that is offensive here.

fieryginger · 20/11/2018 04:14

The sad thing about it is this is marketed at men, imo, I wouldn't want DH shopping for my undies. I'd be as pissed off, if he bought me lingerie, as if he'd bought me a toaster.
