Had a log burner fitted
Paid someone to make the chimney breast right then paid someone to fit it.
Been fitted today and the wood for the mantel is too close to the fire so he had to screw fire board to sign it off but it looks shocking!!
AIBU to ask the guy who did the chimney breast to come back and fix it because I'm now worried about lighting it in case the mantel wood piece catches fire 🙄🙄
Cost me 2k and I've been so excited to have a log burner but now I'm stressing!

Is it somehow the chimney man's fault that the mantelpiece is too close to the burner?

CherryPavlova · 19/11/2018 21:20

Your probably worrying about nothing. How close is it? Our inglenook beam is about 4” from the stove and has never been a problem. What did woodburner specification say?

AnInvisibleWoman · 19/11/2018 21:22

Was he aware of measurements for the burner?

guzzlepuzzle · 20/11/2018 06:18

Yes he was aware as the burner was in the house . It's 6 inches above it which is still too close apparently .

Look at the pieces of paper that comes with it. That should give you the minimum distances. Then go back and complain that they shouldn’t fit in an unsafe place and need to put that right for free after you’ve had the chimney breast widened or made higher. I suspect you’ll have to pay for the chimney unless it’s not been done according to your spec.

We're having ours fitted this week, why did you have separate people out? Ours is all being done by one company, the first will likely say he acted on your instruction and didn't fit the burner so not his issue, the second will say you got someone else to make good on the fireplace and it's not his problem they didn't leave enough gap...

guzzlepuzzle · 20/11/2018 08:51

Because getting workman round here to do it all is like finding rocking horse shit! The guy who did the fire place recommended the log burner fitted and assured us he knew what the gap needed to be.

Messaged the guy who did the chimney he's going to sort it as I can't rest with it as it is! Phew!

Did you get a HETAS certificate from the chap that fitted it?

guzzlepuzzle · 21/11/2018 16:03

Yes we have . It's been fitted safely as he's put fire board under the mantel but it looks a sight so we're moving it up!
