Is sending a selfie of yourself in A&E to a group chat of friends is a bit..... odd?

DHs mate sentence a photo of himself in a hospital bed after taking himself to A&E..and then followed up the photo with “they’re taking me into resus” Confused
This mate is diabetic (insulin dependant) so can be unwell.
He was feeling unwell, and took himself in, and apparently they’re concerned with his breathing and are taking him in the resus. Despite being conscious and well enough to send and respond to messages?
But now mate hasn’t responded for 30 minutes
Now DH is in a flat panic and has zoomed off to the hospital, despite me saying a) he can’t have been that bad, as he was sending the messages. B) he’s probably being looked at by nurses/doctors/whatever’s c) the hospital won’t let him in to see his mate, as he’s not family

DH went anyway saying “”phew hasn’t got any family “

Now. The harsh bitch in me thinks this is a huge attention seeking activity.

What are your thoughts?

Any update??

BlackeyedGruesome · 19/11/2018 07:29

Aand E is either as boring as anything, and he is entertaining himself, or is bloody scary and he is loooking for something distracting/conversations on the phone.

youarenotkiddingme · 19/11/2018 07:30

I guess in this situation it's when you find out who your friends are?

I'd say your DH qualifies. Knows his mate is alone with no family in hospital and takes off to check on him.

Whether he's seriously unwell and at risk of respiratory arrest ill or slightly less (although anyone with T1 diabetes will be very ill of has an infection) - he will be worried and need a mate.

Fair play to DH.

HariboLecter · 19/11/2018 07:52

IMHO

Checking into A&E on Facebook with no other info - attention seeking

Sending a selfie to a closed group chat - way of saying I don't appreciate a bit of company/a handhold, without coming out and directly asking.

As someone who has spent plenty of time in hospital, and not told anyone apart from DH (obviously he knew) and parents. I wish I'd let more people know. Hospitals are boring, scary and bloody lonely.

HariboLecter · 19/11/2018 07:53

PS your husband sounds lovely.

MyOtherProfile · 19/11/2018 07:56

Hope the friend is ok. Scary for him. No wonder he sent a message to his mates.

To the poster who said surely it's quicker to send a tweet or post on fb, presumably he just wanted to contact his group of mates and it tell the whole world. Now that probably would have been attention seeking.

00100001 · 19/11/2018 08:00

He's fine :)

He's young so will be awake and alert despite all the numbers being bad and deteriorating. If he's breathless with DKA he's probably acidotic and needs resus and possibly then ITU.

reallyanotherone · 19/11/2018 08:04

Yes a&e resus is basically the intensive care area.

They are put in there if they need one to one care, and/or they have a condition that may deteriorate suddenly.

In many conditions, including cardiac arrest, it’s the speed of the response that matters. If they are alreading in the room with all the drugs and advanced life support, valuable seconds are saved sending for equipment or moving the patient.

Serious life changing injuries like backs or badly broken limbs etc would also be put there for management.

RangeRider · 19/11/2018 09:14

Attention seeking...?! God some people are bitches on here. He’s sick and asking for support. Op you sound horrible. Your husband sounds lovely though.
But it is attention-seeking. Surely if you're in need of a handhold you contact someone individually or post a group message (without photo) asking if anyone's free to pop along? You don't post selfies and then go quiet so everyone panics & assumes the worst.

BasilFaulty · 19/11/2018 09:16

He's fine

Well blow me down with a feather!

Onecutefox · 19/11/2018 10:05

OP, so what happened? We are curious to find out more details.

stressedbeyond123 · 19/11/2018 10:52

Personally i hate this type of thing - always seems totally inappropriate. A bit like who have poorly children in hospital and take photos of them laying in bed attached to drips etc and post it on social media - totally uncalled for!
that being said this could have been this chaps way of asking for help or reassurance....he could have just messaged his mates, but as easy as that seems some people to do find it difficult to do.
i'd keep schtum this time but maybe just bring up the fact that if he needs ever help in the future, just ask x

@00100001, that's great. A bit of a scare for his friends.

BasilFaulty · 19/11/2018 15:03

Frustratedmum78
He sent a random photo saying he was going into resus, then went completely silent on all of them, panicking them. I had sepsis last year and messaged my friends once I'd come round, that's not the issue at all, and that's not what he did. Read the full thread before you call people a bitch.

Redskyandrainbows67 · 19/11/2018 18:18

Stressedbeyond - until it’s been your child and you in that situation you have absolutely zero right or ability to judge
I posted a photo of my child having collapsed and on life support in picu - it wasn’t ‘attention seeking’ I was bloody distraught, and desperately needed to tell as many people at one for as much support as I could get.
Fuck off with your bloody judgements - if someone does that just be glad it isn’t your child and offer them the support they are clearly seeking by posting.

Redskyandrainbows67 · 19/11/2018 18:19

And I didn’t contact people individually because I was a bit preoccupied to spend time messaging everyone individually!!!

Redskyandrainbows67 · 19/11/2018 18:20

So yeah just generally fuck off - until it has been you or your child you have no right to judge at all

RebeccaCloud9 · 19/11/2018 18:25

Anyone else wondering what the hobby is? That's always the main thing I want to know on threads where a mysterious hobby is mentioned.

IHaveBrilloHair · 19/11/2018 18:26

Resuss where I am doesn't necessarily mean that you need to be resuscitate
I get taken there to be given hydrocortisone and magnesium, so they can keep a much closer eye on me.
I have brittle asthma and go in frequently.
I always share on FB so my friends know and can support me.

jarhead123 · 19/11/2018 18:29

Attention seeking. Taking me to resus sounds dramatic as you say, for someone who is able to text, so he is obviously enjoying the drama!

Redskyandrainbows67 · 19/11/2018 18:38

Yeah cause everyone loves a good hospital stay with a potentially fatal disease....! Have you ever actually been in hospital jarhead or are you just an unsympathetic troll?
