To tip delivery drivers etc

I tip everyone. Pizza delivery, taxi driver, hairdresser. It's endless but I always think it's the 'right thing' to do.

OH thinks they see me coming and they all get paid to do the job and I don't tip the people behind the scenes so why delivery people etc.

I just think it's what you do.

Do you tip? If so, who and why?

I tipped them if they were bringing something heavy up when we lived in a 2nd floor flat.

Sunflowersforever · 18/11/2018 15:42

We just had pizza delivered for the kids and friends as a Sunday afternoon treat. Delivery was £3.99 and I gave £2 tip. OH thinks I'm daft as they already charged enough for delivery.

Oddly, I wouldn't tip a Tesco delivery man. Don't know why? But do for pizza???

I handed an extra £1 to the pizza fella last night, and was dismayed when he put the lot straight in his pocket - so I think he’ll hand it all over to the pizza shop. I didn’t want to say “there’s an extra quid for you” because it felt too small as a tip Blush

MNisforlosers · 18/11/2018 15:45

I don’t tip other than my hairdresser which I grudge

^So you tip a man who delivers pizza but not a person who delivers your groceries. Odd.

I agree with your husband by the way

Oh, hairdressers are a never-ever tip scenario for me. I think that’s maybe because I’ve never yet been 100% happy.

But sorry, the point of your question - I don’t know why I do. When I was teens/early twenties I worked in bars/restaurants/casinos and if I got a tip or two, it could make an actual difference to me. Then there were several years when I couldn’t afford to tip. And now I think I tip because I feel like i can afford it, and perhaps should if I could? But my means are such that £1 is about the level that I can chuck about in tips Grin

I always tip hairdresser, nails lady, takeaway delivery drivers. DH doesn't. I feel obliged to but no idea why!

Sunflowersforever · 18/11/2018 15:53

I don't tip for nails, massage, or any beauty treatments now I think of it. Confused but I do my hairdresser.

I need a rule book!

On the subject of tipping, I was thinking of tipping my Tesco delivery driver, but want to make sure those who pick my shopping benefit aswel. Any suggestions on how I go about doing this?

Aprilsinparis · 18/11/2018 18:07

Meant to add I was thinking of Christmas, not every week.

Seniorcitizen1 · 18/11/2018 20:20

I dont tip - never have never will. People get paid to do a job, end off. If they think they dont get paid enough find another job that pays more, get qualifications to get a job that pays more - dont expect me to top up your wages

JeNeBaguetteRien · 18/11/2018 20:31

Yes I tip the pizza delivery driver, but just £1. I usually pay by card so they know the coin is for them.
I tip taxi drivers unless they've been rude!
Hairdressers and beauty treatments are rare these days but yes I tip.
The last supermarket delivery driver said he wasn't allowed a tip for himself but that he liked to support children's charities if I wanted to put his tip in a collection box.
I will give the bin collectors a token gift at Christmas. They are nice and wheel my bin off the driveway if I forget to put it out.

I worked in a bar at uni, it was so nice to get a treat with my tips.

Atchiclees · 19/11/2018 00:39

I don’t tip, unless someone has gone out of their way to help. I can’t afford to keep adding on to the cost of things. I do put a basket in our front porch at Christmas time similar to this as I know delivery drivers have it tough.

This is exactly why I avoid having food delivered if possible. I can’t afford to tip and it makes me feel awkward because I feel like it’s expected. So I go to fetch my pizza etc myself. Although I get deliveries from Royal Mail, Hermes, Yodel, DPD, etc and never feel awkward! And I had my fridge and furniture etc delivered but didn’t feel obliged to tip. Do you tip all of these delivery people?
