To get a real Xmas tree with no water

Imustbemad00 · 18/11/2018 12:40

Has anyone had a real Xmas tree and not kept it in water? I really want a real one but having it in water is not an option. Is it possible for it to love for a month. I’ve heard people say it’s fone for them but I’m not sure 🤔
Don’t want it to die before Xmas.

No it'll be as dry as a nuns crotch by Christmas day

Louise856 · 18/11/2018 12:42

I don’t think it will last long with no water.... I’ve had a couple of real ones that have been in water and still end up looking a bit brown / dead by Christmas Day! Why can’t you have it in water?

Annebronte · 18/11/2018 12:43

Why is it not possible to put it in water? I always have a real one and use a stand with screws you tighten to hold the trunk in place and you just top it up with water every few days. We put ours up 2nd week of December and it lasts well. Get a Nordman tree: they don’t drop much.

MissMooMoo · 18/11/2018 12:43

Why is water not possible?!
I have never had a real treee and not given it water. They drink litres and litres of it for the first few days before it slows down.

HelpmeNOW352879 · 18/11/2018 12:46

You can get a stand for the tree that has an area for water, you also need to score the bottom of the trunk to let the water soak up. The tree can get very dry without water and can also be a fire hazard if using lights. Be careful

PetuliaBlavatsky · 18/11/2018 12:47

Certain types last longer than others. If you really can't have a stand with water (why not?) then your best bet is getting something like a Nordman fir type and have it for only two weeks in a cool room.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/11/2018 13:28

If you get a potted one not a cut one it will be in a pot of soil? You’d need to water it obviously, but it wouldn’t be in liquid.

WinkysTeatowel · 18/11/2018 13:55

We usually ware ours in its holder. Why can't you have it in something to allow you to water it?

Stephisaur · 18/11/2018 13:59

When we get a real tree, we get a potted one. Just water it once a week with a measuring jug straight into the soil.

Low effort, tree stays alive for weeks :)

eddiemairswife · 18/11/2018 14:20

I always have a real tree and have never put it in water. I get it a week before Christmas and take it down after Jan 6th; it is still green then.

3boysandabump · 18/11/2018 15:09

I don't understand why you can't water it. You just get a stand that holds the water and top it up once a day when you remember

HarryDresdensLeatherDuster · 18/11/2018 15:14

Have had a real tree for the last 25 years and never given it water. They do start to droop and drop needles but will last a couple of weeks.

SPARKS17 · 18/11/2018 15:16

I think it depends on the room temp and type of tree. I didn’t water ours and it looked fine when I took it down at the end of January. It does sit in a fairly cool living room which helps.

purplecorkheart · 18/11/2018 15:17

If you are not going to water it make sure you do not use lights on it. Not sure why you cannot get a tree stand with screws to hold the tree and allows yoh water it.

debumere · 18/11/2018 15:19

We've always had a real tree but we don't put one up until mid December and it lasts until we take it down 6th January. It's far nicer than a fake one and smells great.

Imustbemad00 · 18/11/2018 16:45

Because the trees sold near me come on wooden bases. I can not get another tree as nowhere will deliver here and I can’t fit one in my car.
I did get one years ago and I remember it had drooped a lot by Xmas.
Not a massive room and obviously will have heating on. I like to put it up 1st December so it needs to last a while.
It’s just some of my neighbours swear that there’s lasts 5 weeks with no water.
Oh well guess I can’t get a real one then ☹️ Until mumsnet I didn’t even know that people kept Xmas trees in pots of water as if never seen real ones very often. They never sold them near me until recently.

OP posts:
Limensoda · 18/11/2018 16:50

Just keep the wooden base moist?
I've had trees like that and never even thought about water.

Underpressureidiot · 18/11/2018 16:51

Yes seconding what someone else said about lights, tree can go up in flames in seconds. Artificial seems like your best bet.

EdithBouvier · 18/11/2018 16:53

LED lights don't get hot just so you know

dun1urkin · 18/11/2018 16:55

Why don’t you knock the base off? I whack with a hammer will sort it.

I have seen some sad, sad real trees that haven’t been watered in my time and have to say I worry that they are a bit of a fire hazard (don’t know if that’s a rational fear though to be honest Grin)

dun1urkin · 18/11/2018 16:56

Oh I see others share my fears, good-o

itsnowthewaitinggame · 18/11/2018 16:57

Ive had real trees for around 30 years. Never had them in water, you'll be fine

SendintheArdwolves · 18/11/2018 16:57

Why don't you just take the wooden cross off the bottom and put it in a holder? Or put the trunk (cross and all) in a bucket? (then decorate the bucket with wrapping paper and tinsel, of course)

eddiemairswife · 18/11/2018 16:59

I never leave the lights on when I go out or overnight.

Bubblysqueak · 18/11/2018 17:00

We stand our wooden base in a big red bucket (the DC toy bucket) and half full with water. We put it up on 1st December and down on 1st Jan a d never had any problems.
