To get a real Xmas tree with no water

Imustbemad00 · 18/11/2018 12:40

Has anyone had a real Xmas tree and not kept it in water? I really want a real one but having it in water is not an option. Is it possible for it to love for a month. I’ve heard people say it’s fone for them but I’m not sure 🤔
Don’t want it to die before Xmas.

Clearly some trees are chopped weeks before they are sold! That’s the only way I can see that they would malt so quickly.

mrsoutnumbered · 18/11/2018 18:43

Do you have a Wilko near you? They sell decent sized potted trees for around £30.

I also saw some in Sainsbury's today although they're very small.

HungryChocoHippo · 18/11/2018 18:44

I never put water in mine, but usually I only buy it around the 10th of december.

Beeziekn33ze · 18/11/2018 18:48

OP Maybe you could ask your neighbours what they do to make their trees last?

Greatorb · 18/11/2018 18:51

This video demonstrates an electrical fault on some Christmas lights on an unwatered Christmas tree.

Still think it's a good idea?

AmazingGrace16 · 18/11/2018 18:57

I use a website called send me a Christmas tree. The trees are cut fresh and delivered free on a week day. They have left the tree in the porch for us before when nobody was in to collect.
We've never sawed the base off and just popped in a stand with water.
We get our tree early...end of Nov and it always lasts! Goes slightly dry but not brown

Ansumpasty · 18/11/2018 18:58

We get a real one every year and I I never put it in water. I just have one of those screw in bases. It’s always still fine at new year! We even left it at the side of the house for a few months once, and it still looked fine.
Perhaps it’s the type of Xmas tree- we always get Canadian spruce/Fraser fur.

CraftyGin · 18/11/2018 18:58

You saw the wooden base off.

PetuliaBlavatsky · 18/11/2018 20:05

Wow greatorb that video is absolutely horrifying!

MissMooMoo · 18/11/2018 22:22

I had never seen people NOT put their trees in water until I moved to the UK (i am originally from Canada)
I use a krinner stand, super easy to put tree up and easy to add water to.

Greatorb · 18/11/2018 22:49

PetuliaBlavatsky

I was amazed at the speed of how quickly it went up. Previous posters have said that they don't water their tree but unplug the lights at night. Imagine being in the same room when that caught fire. I doubt many would escape unharmed.

Purpleartichoke · 18/11/2018 22:52

One year we had a tree that just would not drink any water. By Christmas Day it was terrifyingly dry. We took it down and got it out of the house the second we finished opening presents. We were so worried about a fire, the Next year we bought a fake tree despite the fact that I have always insisted on real.

You just pull the wooden stand off and put it in a proper tree stand.

Umbongointhejungle · 18/11/2018 22:53

Ah on earth leaves their Christmas tree lights on when they aren’t there or are in bed! That’s madness

Alabasterangel6 · 18/11/2018 23:02

Our local tree farm suggests water or value lemonade. Something to do with citric acid and sugar. I’ve varied between the two but never has a dropping tree (and it’s in a room with a log burner so generally a very warm dry room)

MissMooMoo · 18/11/2018 23:20

@purpleartichoke it sounds like you didn't cut a bit of the bottom of the trunk.
The tree will seal itself with sap if you don't do that, has to be done at most a few hours before putting the tree in water.

PetuliaBlavatsky · 19/11/2018 13:41

Umbongointhejungle I agree, but if you watch the video, it's a matter of seconds for the tree to be blazing, you could easily be out of the room that long without thinking to turn the lights off.
