To get a real Xmas tree with no water

Has anyone had a real Xmas tree and not kept it in water? I really want a real one but having it in water is not an option. Is it possible for it to love for a month. I’ve heard people say it’s fone for them but I’m not sure 🤔
Don’t want it to die before Xmas.

Just knock the base off :)

nottakingthisanymore · 18/11/2018 17:05

Terrible videos on you tube of tree fires caused by Xmas tree not being in water.

BackforGood · 18/11/2018 17:14

SO you have lots of choices....

Put it in a room where the heating isn't so high
water it
put it up later in the month
Some combination of these 3
or
get an artificial one.

Imustbemad00 · 18/11/2018 17:32

I don’t think the wooden base would go in a bucket. It’s too big. I also thought from what I’ve read on here you had to chop the bottom of the trunk off when you buy it to allow it to drink. I don’t own a saw nor would I want to try using one 😳

I guess I’ll have to use my artificial one. May treat myself to a new one though that doesn’t need each branch spread out and attached individually (takes hours)

Our stand leaks so now I just pack it with news paper and keep the paper damp. Trees seem to last though am not sure if it is the wet paper or the type of tree

Daftapath · 18/11/2018 17:42

Take the base off or ask the guys where you buy it to do so. Where I bought mine last year were very happy to knock the base off for me. It took them mere seconds.

Leeds2 · 18/11/2018 17:46

I didn't know you had to water real trees! Mine have always survived, although I wouldn't buy until 15 December at earliest, usually later.

OP there are a number of online UK companies that will deliver anywhere.

I usually get my trees at IKEA as they are pretreated and last well over sknth however I left it too late last year and they’d sold out.

I love on a fairly remote village in Scotland and managed to get one delivered from online company. It was also pretreated (so no issues with tons of dropped needles).

I keep them in an ugly plastic stand that holds water from Ikea however J hide it with a skirt.

Live* (not “love”)

We used to have real trees pre DD, kept them on the wood base and never watered them. Always got it first week of Dec and it was still looking good after New Year! We got them from a local farm and never went for the cheapest breed of trees though, don't know if that was a difference?

I think you just have to keep it away from radiators etc as that dries them out.

YoThePussy · 18/11/2018 18:02

I bought a potted tree last Christmas. Put it in the garden in its pot afterwards where it has steadily grown bigger over this year. Looking forward to bringing it back in to be decorated. My new cats are looking forward to it too and ripping all the baubles off.

Umbongointhejungle · 18/11/2018 18:04

I have never in my life put water anywhere near one! Never hear of it. And always get one first week of December

bridgetreilly · 18/11/2018 18:08

Dead trees don't last for a month. Get one for Christmas on 23rd/24th December and it will easily last you to January 6th.

I would never have thought anyone would do this, but it seem that it’s not uncommon in the UK, according to this thread. But I am in Canada where the winters are very dry. A tree without water would be bald in two days as the needles would have fallen off.

Lululemonade · 18/11/2018 18:13

Can you not just ask for one without the stand or ask them to knock it off? Then buy a base you can water... in my experience the men who sell around here will chop the trunk down etc to help you out

Umbongointhejungle · 18/11/2018 18:13

Maybe it’s draughty old houses and shit heating that help!
I mean by the 2nd jan it’s a bit dry but in general it’s fine!

PoliticalBiscuit · 18/11/2018 18:16

Yes! I've done it a couple of times.

We also use outdoor lights on it, turn it off at the wall and give the tree a good spritz wirh water every couple of nights.

Make sure it's not too close to a radiator.

tAAC · 18/11/2018 18:16

Eh....I've had real trees since forever, have never had a fake one and have NEVER watered it. How warm are your houses?!

PoliticalBiscuit · 18/11/2018 18:17

And we were advised first year to leave it outside in water for a couple of days before bringing it in.

We now have a holder that contains water.

onthenaughtystepagain · 18/11/2018 18:20

We didn't water ours last year and it was healthier when we threw it out than many of the other trees were before Christmas, we always go to a farm and select our own, as near to a 'blue' as we can get.

daisypond · 18/11/2018 18:20

Never put ours in water. Goes up mid December, tree down on 6th Jan. Seemed to survive OK. We put it in a bucket supported on the inside with some bricks, and the bucket wrapped in wrapping paper. For the first time last year we bought a supermarket potted one that we put outside again in January, and we'll bring it inside again for this year.

WindyWednesday · 18/11/2018 18:23

I had no idea dry trees are a fire risk.

Lovingbenidorm · 18/11/2018 18:25

We’ve got a really good base that has a spike in the middle and a dish for water. I get our tree 2 weeks before Christmas and keep it well watered, it still looks a little shrivelled by NY Eve but we keep our house v warm

thismeansnothing · 18/11/2018 18:27

We always get a real one usually 1-2 weekend day before Xmas and take down on 12th night. Never in water and the only place to have it in our front room is to the side of the radiator (which we turn down) and it's always been fine. Never drops and doesn't really droop. However the real tree we get it get chopped down the day we pick it up so that must help alot

Yura · 18/11/2018 18:32

about 1 week without water, and needles will start to come off (a lot!) after 2 days or so.
