Ask Alexa "who is the fairest of them all"? 😁

I'd love a few answers before I buy one:

  1. How can I get Alexa to turn off lights?
  1. Can the lights be turned on if I'm outside the house I.e if I'm on way home and it's getting dark.
  1. Can I use Alexa as an alarm clock but with MY choice of alarm bell/song instead of the standard default one.
  1. How does Alexa link to my boiler? I've read that it turns central heating on!

Are the taller ones better than the dots? Why?

Thanks!

TheWiseWomansFear · 18/11/2018 16:08

She tells story's if you ask...

Pieceofpurplesky · 18/11/2018 16:13

I just have this image of farting alexa's all over the country ...

megletthesecond · 18/11/2018 16:27

Look at the South Park Alexa clips on you tube 😂. V.rude.

FurryDogMother · 18/11/2018 16:29

I just asked Alexa to remind me to put the rubbish out every Wednesday at 8 am, and she said 'OK, I'll remind you every Wednesday' - so to the PP who asked - yes, she does understand full sentences.

fieryginger · 18/11/2018 18:46

For those with Google Home, ask it if it knows what a penis beaker is 😂 it'll answer you.

LucieMorningstar · 18/11/2018 18:51

Ash her if she can beatbox...

student26 · 18/11/2018 18:54

Ask her if she believes in silicon heaven 😂 (Red Dwarf machine heaven).

BouleBaker · 18/11/2018 19:01

Asking Alexa to Open the Magic Door is awesome. Thank you to the poster who suggested that. We don't have an Echo, just a kindle but handy for playing music and getting the weather forecast.

Greypaw · 18/11/2018 19:16

"Alexa, tell Blackadder I have a cunning plan"

e1y1 · 18/11/2018 19:16

@CisMyArse - you need a lot off new gadgets

  1. You need to buy WiFi enabled lightbulbs to go in to your lights (replacing current bulbs)
  1. I'd assume so - through Alexa app on your phone
  1. Again I'd have thought so, it's a Bluetooth enabled speaker which would connect to your phone, am assuming you can ask Alexa to set alarm on your phone (which it would link to through the app on said phone)
  1. You'd need a system that connects Alexa to your central heating - it's called Hive (I don't know if there is more than one) you buy the hive, it essentially replaceds your thermostat so asking Alexa controls the Hive which of course controls the temp in your home. There is or of course a cost and then a monthly cost in having hive (from what I understand )
e1y1 · 18/11/2018 19:17

Sorry another one Cis - yes believe the taller ones are better (better speakers and sound) this would be the one I get if I decide t go through with it.

Still very unsure.

BlackStar7 · 18/11/2018 20:16

Play trivia hero!

madnessIsay · 18/11/2018 20:18

Mine has just arrived, got to love that Prime delivery. Is music free?

CisMyArse · 18/11/2018 22:22

e1 - huge thanks!

BG2015 · 18/11/2018 22:51

We use it to play different radio stations
We blue tooth our iPads to play music through it.

We play - Question of the Day, Pointless, Three Questions & Would you Rather?

We've also played some escape type games which was funny.

It does annoy us sometimes though as it misinterprets what we say which can be frustrating.

isthatalright · 18/11/2018 23:07

Lol she also farts

willdoitinaminute · 18/11/2018 23:20

If you have a dog ask her to bark. Makes our dog tip her head from side to side.
DH mainly uses her to play music while he does the ironing. He chats to her like she’s a real person and always says please after requesting a track. DS and I cry with laughter. Just wish they’d programme her to say “your welcome” just to hear his reaction.

ZanyMobster · 18/11/2018 23:21

So many things to try. We have 4 and I have never tried connecting to the others. Just bought a new one and got it delivered in 2 hours on prime now, love it!! We have it for the kids new games room, apparently she can control the tv.

Ilovealexa · 19/11/2018 07:07

@ZanyMobster definitely connect them all up, you just add them to a group. Means you can play a song on all of them at once Grin

ZanyMobster · 19/11/2018 07:27

Brilliant thanks

Happycamper78 · 19/11/2018 07:35

My parents have one to remind them about medication, appointments and birthdays etc. as their memories are not so good. I'd love them to be able to play music. What do they need for that? Does it have to link to a tablet?

WingingItStill · 19/11/2018 07:39

This is the thread that I needed, the meowing has just sent my dogs nuts!

Madcats · 19/11/2018 15:44

"Is music free?"
With Amazon Prime you can access some of the music catalogue (whether this is enough will depend on your music taste). You can also get it to do things like "play me 80's Indie Music" or "Heavy Metal" (there was an article last year that found this style of music made men more likely to lose at board games - DD and I thought it was hilarious).
BBC App is good for catching up on podcasts/radio. @hc78 I think your parents would probably be happy enough with the radio stations - it is something called Tunein.

I tend to use it for timing/setting reminders/adding things to Ocado/lists and converting measurements/currency.

Alexa seems fairly reliable for local weather (gives me % chance of rain and amount so can decide if coats are reqd or just a brolly).
