Bluntness100 If someone gave you a robot that worked just like a human would you use it? I mean looked like a human, talked like a human, moved like a human, fucked like a human, loved like a human.
Would you get one? Would you put it in your home?

Pieceofpurplesky · 20/11/2018 15:02

I do wonder why the government would want to spy on me. I have no money, don't break the law (intentionally) and live a simple life. There is nothing really interesting they could find about me. I don't really care what they know. Alternatively I am quite happy for them to gather data on dangerous people who may cause harm to others ...
Naive view maybe but they'd be bored shitless if they infiltrated my home and heard me explaining everything 100 times to my rapidly declining mother, arguing with teenager about homework and discussing football with my dad.

Pieceofpurplesky · 20/11/2018 15:02

Oh am giveme your robot sounds a damn sight better than exh

LittleTopic · 20/11/2018 15:33

DH insists on having an Alexa in the bedroom - we have three Hmm

I've no issue with it until she clearly mishears something and starts nattering away when I'm making the bed or something!

Possibly, apart from the loving and sex thing. By the time artificial intelligence has reached such a Level as you describe and it's affordable and common place in millions of homes globally , then there will have been plenty of forerunners, of which I guess gadgets like Alexa are just the beginning.

Alexa I guess is Like an early computer or one of those old dial telephones with a lady at rhe exchange putting you through, or a car you wound up.

Artificial intelligence is the way of the future though, and will become more mainstream and more advanced, like phones, computers and television.

In a couple of generations time kids will smile in pity at things like Alexa as it seems so basic,a bit like we do when we look at rhe first computer games on tv, or whatever. Technology moves fast, once they have the basics, then within a generation or two it evolves to something we could only dream of.

I still recall the first TV game, tennis, on a black and white screen you hooked up a huge machine to. Now I watch what can be done on things like PS4 or Xbox and live gaming and it's a million miles more advanced.

SpoonBlender · 20/11/2018 16:36

@WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit You must have them plumbed in to two different Amazon accounts. All your girls-inna-can should be effectively identical, since they all are just speakers+mics leading back to the same account at Amazon.

Except for this... www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?tag=mumsnetforum-21&nodeId=202086660 where a specific type of Amazon Music is locked to one single device.

SherlockHolmes · 20/11/2018 16:39

bowlofbabelfish you can turn it off though.

OP try "Ditty". I love to hear Alexa singing that DH smells of poo Grin
Also, there are 3 Pointless questions every day.
Escape the Room is quite good, if a little annoying.
I mainly use it to tell DS his tea's ready, as he has a Dot.
I second Akinator.

FromEden · 20/11/2018 16:57

I'd advise anyone who has it to go into the Alexa app and look at the recordings stored. It records lots of stuff, not just when you are talking to it but actual conversations. Its creepy. That's what made me unplug it for good

CarolDanvers · 20/11/2018 18:27

Ours arrived. Same day delivery. So far we've listened to Disney songs on a loop "you're welcome!" anyone? Dd absolutely loves it and it's making me happy to see her so delighted in something. I really love it actually, for the music alone but ds has been using for spelling for his history today and dd will use it for her French later. Worth every penny imvho.

Nanalisa60 · 20/11/2018 18:40

I like to ask her if it’s going to snow !! every day Even in the summer heatwave. Now I think I will change it and ask if I will be at risk of sunburn I just like to hear her answer. Also I ask her to tell me jokes!! Sometimes they are not half bad.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 20/11/2018 18:42

SpoonBlender I have Prime music, I don't want to pay for Music Unlimited... I'm going through settings on the app and there is no where that specifies only one Alexa can have it.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 20/11/2018 18:44

And they are both registered to me, to my account and I can see them both on my Alexa app.

Bluntness100 · 20/11/2018 18:49

No it doesn't.

Seriously why do people keep posting this made up stuff. Anyone who has one, knows it's not true. It takes two seconds to check as well.

Whitecottonsheets · 20/11/2018 18:52

@ Bluntness100 I cant work out if you are being wilfully obtuse or not! I don’t believe the government is spying on everyone and the type of technology we have available to us is incredible. I am not scared of technology- I do embrace it.
What I don’t embrace is multi national companies such amazon, Facebook and google- whose worth is extrinsicly linked to the quality of personal data they hold on its customers. They are not breaking any laws in collecting this data because people agree to it! It’s the trade off for the free/cheap use of this technology. Think about how expensive the first colour TVs were? But you can buy the latest amazon echo dot is £25? The value is in the data amazon gets and the profile that it can than build on its customer- not the device itself. Think about what information you share with your device and the detailed profile amazon can build from that. e.g, what food you like, where and when you go on holiday, what time you get home, when you call your partner, what time you eat dinner, what time you get up, where you shop, your family structure, medical information, job etc etc which can all be deduced from the questions you ask and the schedules you share with Alexa.
In the US, customers without an Alexa device spend on average $1000 a year. Customers with an Alexa device spend on average $1700. And That is what they want - for you to spend more money!
But each to their own!

OliviaStabler · 20/11/2018 18:53

So what? Who is listening to it? Do you think they have auditoriums of people at Langley just listening to me asking my cat if he wants ham?

FromEden · 20/11/2018 18:54

No it doesn't.

It does. I had one and I saw the recordings, too many to even listen to them all. Most of them weren't questions or statements addressed to alexa. But yeah, I'm just making it up Hmm

Bluntness100 · 20/11/2018 18:59

Are you trying to suggest that Alexa talks them into buying more. Or are you saying people with higher disposable incomes buy them?

And from Eden no it doesn't. Anyone with an Alexa on here can check their own, it's settings then history. I've just checked mine and no it doesn't it records only your interactions with it

Sigh.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 20/11/2018 19:04

Where can I find these recordings?

Bluntness100 · 20/11/2018 19:06

Where can I find these recordings?

Good question. I think we'd all like to know the answer...

curgina · 20/11/2018 19:06

The erosion of civil liberties and the importance of that has been debated to death already with things like ID cards, the prevalence of CCTV, social media, etc. You know, the whole "I'm not a criminal so it doesn't bother me" bit. We've all had that discussion before! I think it's fair to say that whether you're bothered about it or not is a personal decision. That's fine.

But people claiming it's not possible for the government to use modern technologies like this to monitor citizens are plainly wrong. The government can read your emails, your private messages on FB and Twitter, they can track your location via the GPS on your phone, they can listen to your phone calls. So I'm fairly confident they could listen to conversations that you stream to the internet with ease if they wanted to.

Like I said, whether you care about that or not is a personal decision, but everyone should be aware of the fact that it's possible.

Bluntness100 · 20/11/2018 19:09

But people claiming it's not possible for the government to use modern technologies like this to monitor citizens are plainly wrong

No one said it wasn't technically possible. What was said was due to thr human rights laws in place in western societies this wouldn't occur and if the government wished to monitor its citizens it would hardly need to use a sodden echo dot. 🤣

curgina · 20/11/2018 19:13

Clearly you're on the "I don't mind my civil liberties being eroded because the government and huge corporations would never do anything wrong and I'm a boring law-abiding citizen" side of the debate. Like I said, that's your decision and not a discussion I really wantto get into because it's been done to death.

Whitecottonsheets · 20/11/2018 19:13

A survey was done on 39000 Amazon customers.
For people who have Echos, in the past 12 months they significantly increased spending on pet food and treats, baking and cooking, grooming, and health and beauty products.
Echo is causing people to get more reliant on Amazon and spending on Amazon jumps 29% after purchasing an Echo.having an Echo helps drive more impulsive shopping behavior: think it, buy it. Shoppers with voice assistant devices purchase CPG products nearly two times as often when compared to all Amazon shoppers.
The reasearch shows that buying an Echo leads to more purchasing on Amazon.
But I guess I’m making that up! Sigh.

FromEden · 20/11/2018 19:16

here is a link that shows how to do it.

Mine had tons of ones labelled "text not available" which was snippets of random conversations. Yes, it happened, I'm not making it up

Bluntness100 · 20/11/2018 19:16

Eh, I don't buy more because I have an echo. I don't use it to buy stuff but having one doesn't make lose control of your brain function 🤣
