Only 1 dc and I eating together this evening. As I went out this afternoon we discussed dinner and she asked if we could have tomato risotto.

I said (this is the important bit!!) “yes, good idea and while I’m out can you just check in the greenhouse and see if there are any ripe tomatoes and let me know how many as I’ll pop to the shop on the way home and get some more and some Parmesan”

Text arrives in a bit “5 tomatoes”.

Fast forward 3 hours to me arriving home and starting to cook “Where did you put the tomatoes darling?”

“Oh I didn’t realise you wanted me to pick them, I just counted them!”

She had even had a conversation with her father as to why Mum wanted tomatoes counting and he just thought I was being a bit odd!!!

I actually do not believe people IRL use dialogue such as Darling.

😂😂😂 What? Do you not know any people?

Skatersbeskating · 17/11/2018 22:10

I say darling all the time to DD, Im not posh though. I call her mush as well,

Its more of a darlin, that comes out of my gob Grin

Miscible · 17/11/2018 22:15

I'd have picked them. The clue's in the fact that they were going to have tomato risotto and OP was clearly saying she needed to know how many ripe ones were available so she would know how many she needed to buy.

Antigon · 17/11/2018 22:16

What if you couldn't cook risotto that night?

I would have counted and asked how many shall I pick?

But she's a child, how old is she?

InsomniacAnonymous · 17/11/2018 22:16

You said "see if there are any ripe tomatoes and let me know how many". You didn't say "see if there are any ripe tomatoes, if there are, pick them and let me know how many you've picked" did you?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 17/11/2018 22:19

I would have estimated two or three tomatoes for a risotto for two people so wouldn't have picked them without knowing how many you needed. You could just has easily have told her to have a look in the greenhouse and pick 4/5/6 if there were that many ripe ones.

BreconBeBuggered · 17/11/2018 22:21

From another POV, if they'd been picked and left in my kitchen, chances are some bugger would have eaten them, because home-grown tomatoes are too gorgeous to resist. So it's just as well they were left unpicked.

Awwlookatmybabyspider "I actually do not believe people IRL use dialogue such as Darling."

I call my daughter 'darling' as well as 'my little piranha fish'* and various other endearments. She's an adult and has left home. Is there anything wrong with that?

*'my little piranha fish' is a Fawlty Towers reference for anyone to young to know that.

stressedtiredbuthappy · 17/11/2018 22:22

Oh op, I can't believe how many posters are telling you you're wrong!!!just goes to show common sense isn't that common!!

tolerable · 17/11/2018 22:23

you missed a vital instruction.can i have recipe anyway please?x

Passmethecrisps · 17/11/2018 22:24

Total aside but how on Earth are your tomatoes still ok? Ours were knackered weeks ago.

I think you needed to be explicit about how many you needed.

akerman · 17/11/2018 22:27

I say darling.

tolerable · 17/11/2018 22:28

Aw looitmybabyspider.my dad called me sweetheart right up til he died,if not i was the middle of the threename run through.i call my kids weird names or initials- i would kill anyone else for doing-..

VladmirsPoutine · 17/11/2018 22:28

Even so, how long would it take to just pluck them or ask her get them once you got home?

Wannabeyorkshirelass · 17/11/2018 22:28

I woudn't have picked them either. It wasn't clear what was the optimum number of tomatoes for a risotto - what if you'd needed four and then two were wasted?

Tomato risotto sounds a bit gross btw.

00100001 · 17/11/2018 22:29

yabu.

sozzlemuffins

VanGoghsDog · 17/11/2018 22:30

Nope, I'd have counted them - unclear instructions.

The instruction should have been 'count how many there are and bring back x number if there are that many'.

Btw - tomatoes in risotto? New one on me.

Someone called me 'darling' today, but it was a wrong number!

IHateUncleJamie · 17/11/2018 22:34

It was obvious to you because you knew what you wanted. It clearly wasn’t obvious to your dd. I used to hate it when my mother expected me to be a mind reader so I’m always careful to give exact instructions to dd. Much easier for everyone. You asked “how many”, you didn’t say “pick the ripe ones and let me know how many” so yes, YWBU.

Ellie56 · 17/11/2018 23:02

I actually do not believe people IRL use dialogue such as Darling.

Some friends of ours do it all the time. Everyone is "Darling."

Bloomini · 17/11/2018 23:12

I'd just have counted them too. Clearly I haven't got any common sense.

Love tomato risotto but I wouldn't want to mix my nice ripe tasty homegrown ones with bland supermarket ones Smile

OopsIdidittentimes · 17/11/2018 23:18

First World problems. ;)

GremlinDolphin1 · 17/11/2018 23:37

Thank you so much for all your responses - I have enjoyed reading them (even if I think most of you are lacking common sense!) and will be more explicit in my instructions from now on.

I do really say “darling” IRL (and lots of other not so charming names too!)

To those who haven’t had creamy tomato risotto - you are missing a trick - google it! I roast tomatoes and garlic in some olive oil then liquidise it down and then use the resulting liquid to cook the risotto adding some ordinary veg stock at the end. Then dollop of cream, cheese, salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon to serve. (I am now worrying that I have missed some vital instruction out of that!!)

The toms were far enough away (looking after a neighbours garden) to be not collectible in the dark!

They are amazing tomato plants and still a few going red even now. I have saved some seeds to try for next year.

Xx

It’s what would happen here, so I’ve learnt to state the bloody obvious.

...mostly. I’m still ccasionally caught out by the absolute lack of common sense, it truly beggars belief sometimes.

BUT given that lot ^^ are adults, I’m not sure I can cling on to the notion that it will improve any time soon, despite heavy sarcasm and ‘the look’

...god help me. And you. 🍷🍷

Awwlookatmybabyspider "I actually do not believe people IRL use dialogue such as Darling."

what!!?!??

loads of people say darling, its just a common normal everyday word used to refer to those we love round these parts.

Vampiratequeen · 17/11/2018 23:58

I would have just counted them too, wouldn't have picked them without knowing how many were needed.
