AIBU primary teacher branding granddaughter racist

midlifediva · 17/11/2018 17:14

AIBU I am fuming, grand daughter was told off by her teacher and called racist, she is only 8. A child in her class siad her new hair style was horrible and made her look poor, she retaliated by saying at least I am not Russian. (the other child is Russian) She was punished by her teacher and marked as racist in some "bad mark book" The other child was not punished. She then cried and when her friends tried to comfort her they were also punished. She is good at school, works hard and is frequently praised for her kindness to others. This new teacher has overstepped the mark IMHO..

actually bullying is a protected characteristic!! Which is exactly what the Russian girls comment was

Bullying isn’t a characteristic...

There’s no need to tag me thanks, I’m already on the thread. Turning off notifcations hasn’t worked so would appreciate if you didn’t. Thanks.

usertall · 17/11/2018 20:31

@JacquesHammer so you think bullying is acceptable ?? And I'll tag when I want to but thanks anyway.

usertall · 17/11/2018 20:32

I think it's double standards. The little Russian girl is allowed to socially brand her peer as "poor". Yet the girls on the receiving end isn't allowed to retaliate. OP YANBU.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 17/11/2018 20:33

Usertall- you need to look up the meaning of bullying.
One retort on either side isn't it.
And why are you asking Jacques if she is an expat?

Of course the girl can retaliate. You can retaliate without being racist.

JacquesHammer · 17/11/2018 20:35

Seriously user I’m cringing for you 😂

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 17/11/2018 20:38

Bullying is a protected characteristic? This thread has definitely headed off into a parallel universe now. Even if for some reason you’ve managed to avoid all the equalities legislation and don’t know what a pc is, you’d presumably be aware that bullying isn’t characteristic. I mean you’d struggle to use it as an adjective for a start.

And if someone has asked you not to tag them then it’s really bad form to ignore that.

usertall · 17/11/2018 20:38

@JacquesHammer cringe away.

You don't seem to think the Russian girl done anything wrong. I think they both should have been reprimanded.

And PP I don't think that requires an answer.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 17/11/2018 20:39

Well according to another thread all Russians are dirt poor anyway so the little girls a hypocrite too!

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 17/11/2018 20:39

Everyone agrees that the other girl was really unpleasant and needed punishing. There is nothing at all that Jacques has said to suggest she shouldn’t.

There is also nothing in the OP to indicate that there has been any bullying.

JacquesHammer · 17/11/2018 20:42

You don't seem to think the Russian girl done anything wrong

Please do show me where I said that...?

Breadfoam · 17/11/2018 20:43

I worry about ds (9) being branded as racist. He is on the spectrum and occasionally has described one of the children in his class as having ‘skin like chocolate’. I tell him to be careful about what he says and his response is ‘I like chocolate, it’s a nice thing to be like! I’m white like milk and I don’t even like milk!’

Do kids get labelled as racist for comments as the above? I know ds definitely doesn’t mean it in an unkind way but I guess it’s whether or not offence is caused. I guess better he just says nothing but I don’t think he sees it as any different than describing hair or eye colour.

JacquesHammer · 17/11/2018 20:44

And if someone has asked you not to tag them then it’s really bad form to ignore that

Kind of ironic someone in a fury about alleged bullying is willing to deliberately try to antagonise someone because they’re calling them out on their daft - and patently incorrect - points Grin

Craft1905 · 17/11/2018 20:45

*No idea why she said what she did, she is not racist at all.

But she is. And she's learning that from somewhere, either her parents or other family like you.*

Or the TV, or newspapers. Just a quick reminder that the Russian govt recently carried out a chemical weapons attack on British soil murdering innocent British citizens. In the wake of that disgraceful episode, the TV has been full of politicians and others saying "the Russians have behaved appallingly", "we cannot trust what the Russians say" etc etc. Now none of this is the fault of an 8 year old Russian girl, but it's also not necessarily the fault of an 8 year old girl that she has come to the mistaken conclusion that Russians in general are not very nice people.

Maybe Putin should be more concerned about how his actions reflect on innocent Russians living in other countries before he goes ordering executions abroad.

usertall · 17/11/2018 20:45

*You don't seem to think the Russian girl done anything wrong

Please do show me where I said that...?*

Your comments certainly give off that connotation.

usertall · 17/11/2018 20:47

@Craft1905 agree completely.

JacquesHammer · 17/11/2018 20:48

Your comments certainly give off that connotation

Thought as much.

So basically you didn’t like being corrected and are trying to deflect Grin

JacquesHammer · 17/11/2018 20:49

Now none of this is the fault of an 8 year old Russian girl, but it's also not necessarily the fault of an 8 year old girl that she has come to the mistaken conclusion that Russians in general are not very nice people

And yet what she said would still need to be recorded.

usertall · 17/11/2018 20:50

No, I think it is you who is adverse to someone with a different opinion to you.

usertall · 17/11/2018 20:51

Seems a rather sensitive topic for you jacques

JacquesHammer · 17/11/2018 20:53

Seems a rather sensitive topic for you jacques

Well when someone calls bullying a “protected characteristic” Grin

usertall · 17/11/2018 20:53

Deflecting are we ?? Hypocrisy??

m0therofdragons · 17/11/2018 20:54

Girl was unkind but I would be mortified if my dc came out with the "at least I'm not Russian" line. She's learned that somewhere and it's a terrible attitude at such a young age. Other child was fairly standard for an 8yo (unkind but not unusual) your granddaughter's comment would be a bit of a flag to keep an eye on attitudes. That's not a normal 8yo comment.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 17/11/2018 20:54

It’s not opinion though. Jacques has told you that race (which includes nationality) is a protected characteristic, and that schools have a legal responsibility to record and report racist incidences. There’s no agreeing or disagreeing with that, and certainly no reason to think it’s a sensitive topic for her.
