Has anyone else felt irrationally annoyed at Zara Larsson's song Ruin my life or am I over reacting?
I'm by no means easily offended but the lyrics are seriously perpetuating the idea that unhealthy relationships are better than being alone! This is a horrific message to be giving to anyone least of all young people!
Example for those who don't know the song;
'I want you to ruin my life
You to ruin my life, you to ruin my life, yeah
I want you to fuck up my nights, yeah
Fuck up my nights, yeah, all of my nights, yeah
I want you to bring it all on
If you make it all wrong, that'll make it all right, yeah
I miss you pushing me close to the edge
I miss you
I wish I knew what I had when I left
I miss you
You set fire to my world, couldn't handle the heat
Now I'm sleeping alone and I'm starting to freak
Baby, come bring me help
Let it rain over me
Baby, come back to me'

This is why I only listen to radio 4, or on occasion radio X. I'm too old for that kind of nonsense

Nothisispatrick · 17/11/2018 16:07

I saw the video when I was channel flicking a thought the same!

OneTwistedAngel · 17/11/2018 17:02

I've had heart and capital on in the car so have heard it a good few times now. It's such a horrible song and has actually disgusted me!

I'm on the fence. I hate what the song stands for but I like the song itself because it gets stuck in my head 🙈🙈

Poster65 · 17/11/2018 17:20

Yeah cant say I like it! A bit weird!

Nenic · 17/11/2018 17:23

Most people don’t ‘hear’ the lyrics

overnightangel · 22/01/2019 11:03

She’s a hypocrite pretends to stand up for women’s rights but in reality just another airheaded bimbo who will sing anything to sell records

overnightangel · 22/01/2019 11:06

Complete sell out

It's not nice at all!

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 22/01/2019 11:08

YANBU it’s a stupid song. I feel sorry for the young people who listen to this shit and think it’s normal for relationships to be like that.

ComtesseDeSpair · 22/01/2019 11:10

Yeah, it’s shitty. As you say, really poor messages about what a good relationship looks like and perpetuates this notion and that relationships full of drama and angst and breaking up and getting back together again mean you’re two fiery souls made for each other.

Almost as bad as Adele and “Someone Like You” which basically says it’s healthy to turn up at your ex’s wedding and try to get them to notice and fall for you again.

I thought it was saying that was unhealthy but she couldn't help it?

TwittleBee · 22/01/2019 11:19

Hello to another another mainly Radio 4 or Radio X listener MrsStrowman

OP I also hate that song, there is a few that really have grate on me and they are all about unhealthy relationships. YANBU

whymewhyme · 22/01/2019 11:26

OMG I heard this the other day it made me soooooo angry!!

againseriously · 22/01/2019 11:32

I've been looking at it the other way. My feeling was that it was ironic. Obviously, no one actually wants their boyfriend to fuck up/ruin their life but that horrible, abusive relationships happen sometimes and that carrying on with those sorts of relationships will, ultimately, ruin your life.

I.e. - no matter how much you feel like you love someone and want them with you, if it's that bad, your life will be ruined if you carry on.

Must listen to it again properly to reassess my interpretation! 😂

ErickBroch · 22/01/2019 11:39

It's terrible, I hate the message. It's disappointing as she is a quite outspoken feminist but when it comes to morals or having a hit song, she chose the latter. Her fan base is young teen girls I just think it's a crap message.

BuzzLightyearsHoneyBun · 22/01/2019 11:43

Oh yes I hate it! My poor 15 yr old niece was subjected to a rant on why it is such a terrible message within a song. She did agree with me though luckily.

Menarefrommarsitwouldseem · 22/01/2019 11:48

I had a discussion with a colleague about this song.
I despise the lyrics and think it's a scary message to send to impressionable people.

However, the thinks it should be taken as having an ironic meaning.

He's wrong though and I think it's hideous.
Rita oras songs always make me shudder too.

shartsi · 22/01/2019 11:57

I thought it was "I want you to rule my life"Blush
