just stretch the hose over your sodding car

I don't fill the car with fuel that often as it's mainly just used for around time.

Every time I go to the petrol station the access is blocked by people queuing for a pump on the "correct" side of their car.

If I can stretch the hose over my mum-bus people carrier, you can stretch it over your ford fiesta.

Petrol station etiquette should definitely be on the driving test.

I'm with you op. I don't understand why more people don't do this. I've got a new Audi A6, so a big car and I can manage it without making a fool of myself or damaging my car.

Munchkinbug · 17/11/2018 18:45

I totally scratched my car doing this. The rubber hose was covered in dirt, and I didn't know. Dirt contain small stones and mud - huge scratch over the car. Makes me cringe now when I see people stretching the hose over their car. The noise! Urgh, it went right through me.

QueenDramaLlama · 17/11/2018 18:50

I tried this once and it didn't stretch enough. I don't bother with the faff now and just wait.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/11/2018 18:59

told me never to stretch the hose round or over the car because there's a bit of fuel that stays in the hose that you end up paying for

The hose is the same length whether it's coiled up or stretched out. There will be some fuel in the hose when you've finished filling up, but there was when you started.

my great uncle who helped design the multi fuel type pumps

Did your uncle help design the pumps the way my 3 YO 'helps' wrap presents?

Djnoun

I snapped my flap doing this, so I don't recommend it.

Wins thread!

allhdghd · 17/11/2018 19:34

I don't touch the car with the hose when filling from the other side. As before, I move forward of the pump and bring the hose round the back of the car. Right hand to put nozzle in can, left hand to hold hose away from paintwork.

I have never put it near my flap but I can see how it might damage it Grin

3out · 17/11/2018 19:37

Our local pumps don’t stretch that far

howabout · 17/11/2018 19:39

Re drips left in the hose. If you're next to the pump you can tip hose up to shake drips into tank. Otoh hose stretched all round the car leads to overextension, lack of flex and drips all over the forecourt - dangerous when slippy, messy, fire hazard not to mention the £pps.

That's even before you get to the dangers of having you're bum in the line of other cars pulling in and out.

howabout · 17/11/2018 19:39

Obvs your not you're bum Blush

Iamtheoneandonly2018 · 17/11/2018 19:41

Or maybe this one wins - I can't decide

Was a bit amused to note her flap flapping when she pulled along side, such was her hurry.

Iamtheoneandonly2018 · 17/11/2018 19:42

Am crying!

Vivianebrezilletbrooks · 17/11/2018 19:47

Depends how strong you are to stretch a hose. If you're only small then it can be too difficult. The way some people behave on garage forecourts in lack of manners and etiquette (I had a woman scream at me for not getting out of her way quick enough once..talk about self importance!) should be in the driving test not whether or not they have the strength to pull the hose the whole way round.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 17/11/2018 19:55

These threads always make me wonder if some of the posters should be in sole charge of a ton or two of metal.

Disabilities aside, it is possible to fill up either side of your vehicle as long as you park it correctly.

jessebuni · 17/11/2018 19:57

I always use the correct side but that’s because I tend to fill up at times when there’s only like one other car there like 3pm or something random like that. Most hoses here do comfortably reach over most vehicles. Our sprinter it wouldn’t be possible because I wouldn’t be able reach it around or over i don’t think and don’t want to try but cars or smaller vans should be fine with most. However there is one garage near us that absolutely does not reach the other side for most cars and it’s really annoying because I tried it with a Honda jazz once so not a large car but no matter how close I parked it wasn’t reaching and I valiantly tried for quite some time because the other pump was empty! So I had to suck it up and drive in the red to the next garage 😂

To be fair as long as the actual entrance to the garage isn’t blocked then I don’t care about queues or queuing because I’m rarely in a rush but I understand how some would be.

jessebuni · 17/11/2018 19:58

Also no drips would ever get on my vehicle because you can bet I am shaking every drip and drop of that precious paid for fuel out of the hose possible before putting it back 😂

BelindaBellender · 17/11/2018 20:00

From embarrassing experience not all pumps stretch far enoughBlush Plus Im short as fuck and look like I’m trying to wrestle a bear out of my arse sometimes when ragging a non-stretchy hose around my massive car so I’d rather wait thanks.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 17/11/2018 20:02

I didn’t mind being held up by the man in the suit today who had bought with him his special petrol apron and gloves that he carefully out on before filling and very carefully removed and folded when he had finished. That was the best thing I’ve seen.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/11/2018 20:14

Even with my hose fully extended and quite rigid, I manage to avoid dribbling anything slippy all over the place.

Just give the end a little tilt and wiggle while you are still in and then tip back a bit as you withdraw.

Honestly maybe a first timer can't withdraw without making a mess, but there is no excuse for spilling your fluid everywhere when you are no longer a teenager- no matter how short the hose is.

If you are wasting several pounds worth all over the floor, you are doing something very wrong.

I used to work in a petrol station and actually it is not safe to pull the hose over your car unless clearly marked on the pump. I still remember getting so fed up of having to tell customers, over the tannoy (with gritted teeth), not to pull the hose over their cars. The etiquette is to wait behind the car at the pump on the side your fuel cap is at.

Filthy giggles all round 😂😂

Teacher22 · 18/11/2018 06:42

I have been driving since 1980 and it has never occurred to me once that anyone would risk their paintwork or the danger that the hose would be too short to fill up on the wrong side ofthe filler hole. I have to wait a couple of minutes, yes, but I have to wait for a while in many other queues. I find this post most bemusing.

mateysmum · 18/11/2018 07:16

I'm with you OP.

Our local Sainsbury's has 28 pumps and big signs saying "extra long hoses, fill both sides" but still people wait for the "right" side. If people are parked at opposite pumps, there's really not enough room to drive between them to get to the unused pump in front. Very frustrating. Also the queue is a filter in turn system with about 3 lanes, so if the person in front is choosy about their pump, you just have to sit there whilst the other lanes progress.

Max14165 · 18/11/2018 07:36

Petrol station etiquette? If there’s a queue a mile long on for people waiting “ on the right side “ and one becomes available on the “ wrong “ I am going to jump on in there .. fill up to my hearts content .. pay and get out of there whilst you lot are still doing a risk assessment on your chosen pump !! Apologies for not following etiquette I was obviously dragged up by forecourt heathens !! Grin

Vik1ng · 18/11/2018 08:18

When DH did this at local shell station they told him off, saying it wasn’t allowed as unsafe! But we always choose a pump and wait there patiently rather than hugging the entrance. I’ve queue jumped a car before now, as the cars waiting behind him ended up blocking the route out of a supermarket. He became irate when the pump I chose to wait at became free first but he actually calmed down and apologised when I pointed out the queue that had formed. He’d been oblivious to it!
