just stretch the hose over your sodding car

I don't fill the car with fuel that often as it's mainly just used for around time.

Every time I go to the petrol station the access is blocked by people queuing for a pump on the "correct" side of their car.

If I can stretch the hose over my mum-bus people carrier, you can stretch it over your ford fiesta.

Petrol station etiquette should definitely be on the driving test.

Our Mondeo requires the fuel nozzle to be pushed down slightly in the fuel cap to allow the fuel into the tank. I worry that the hose wouldn't be quite long enough to allow that to happen.

Any garage I've been to has separate queues for each set of pumps so you just queue at whatever one and if there are empty pumps with no queue you drive round those waiting on the other pumps.

VisitorsEntrance · 17/11/2018 11:23

If people can't see the amount from the other side of the car they really should not be driving.

Oh ffs. Can you not imagine a scenario where that might happen?
Someone is driving a big 4x4 for example or like my local petrol station the screens are at a funny offset angle that make it very hard to see unless you are stood next it.

Oh ffs yourself. Did you miss the part where I was clearly talking about eyesight!

VisitorsEntrance · 17/11/2018 11:42

Yes. Because you never mentioned eyesight.

Karwomannghia · 17/11/2018 11:45

I always do it on the right side and I love cars and am v experienced but would never block someone from getting to a free one.

allhdghd · 17/11/2018 11:46

Haha. Silly me. I guess the bit where I mentioned not having to look over the top of a car wasn't a big enough clue for you.

luckylavender · 17/11/2018 11:46

I wouldn't & I'd expect people to chill & mind their own business.

Mmmmdanone · 17/11/2018 12:19

I tried this and failed. Looked like a right idiot too! So I will just continue to queue. Or more likely go away and come back when quieter.

wowfudge · 17/11/2018 12:22

I frequently stretch the hose across instead of queuing to use one on the 'right' side. As long as you pull far enough forward, it's no more difficult.

arethereanyleftatall · 17/11/2018 12:43

It's a shame no one on this thread has thought/said

'I didn't realise you could do this by simply pulling forward a bit more*, and I didn't realise it irritated others. Thanks for heads up op, I'll pull forward if necessary in future.'

But no, all there's been is excuse after excuse, almost all of which have been null and void, if you actually read that what people are saying, which is

POSITION YOUR CAR FORWARD OF THE PUMP.

Then, it doesn't matter if you're:

  1. Too short to see over your car
  2. Not strong enough to pull your hose over your car
  3. Don't want to scratch your paintwork.
VisitorsEntrance · 17/11/2018 12:44

Am I going to have to shout?
At some petrol stations the hose is not long enough.
It doesn’t matter where you position your car, where you stand or if you can see the pump or not. It doesn’t matter if you are a 6 ft 4 body builder of a 4ft 11 grandma.
If the hose isn’t long enough it won’t reach.

PiperPublickOccurrences · 17/11/2018 12:51

This is funny.

Not what I was meaning, obviously.

OP posts:
arethereanyleftatall · 17/11/2018 12:54

Rather obviously @VisitorsEntrance, people aren't suggesting you do this where the hose isn't long enough!!

MartaHallard · 17/11/2018 12:57

There are some very rude and aggressive people on this thread. Makes me glad I don't drive and don't have to share road space with them, if their posting style reflects their driving style.

MiniMum97 · 17/11/2018 12:58

I prefer to use the hoses on the side of my petrol cap. It's easier and more comfortable. I always wait so that people can go around me. So just go around me!!!!

VisitorsEntrance · 17/11/2018 13:09

Rather obviously @VisitorsEntrance, people aren't suggesting you do this where the hose isn't long enough!!

There are many people denying that there are any petrol stations where the hose isn’t long enough.

howabout · 17/11/2018 14:52

I once took 5 seconds too long to return to my car for one such individual. She beeped her horn and tail gated me to the first set of lights which coincide with the start of dual carriageway. Was a bit amused to note her flap flapping when she pulled along side, such was her hurry. She then sat revving her engine till the lights change. I drive a sports injection automatic (despite its unassuming Mummobile disguise). Almost had to pull over laughing when I saw her indignation in my rear view mirror as I mosied off into the distance at the light change. Grin

So be my guest with the indignation. Endless source of amusement for the more chilled brethren.

Willow2017 · 17/11/2018 15:23

If there are empty pumps with no queue you drive round those waiting on the other pumps.

You cant do that if numptys are blocking the whole entrance waiting for 'their side pump' as is often the case at my local supermarket. 4 rows of pumps yet they queue for the first 2 as you go into the forecourt. Its crazy.

flowergrrl77 · 17/11/2018 17:53

Honestly I can’t!

I struggle using the hoses at all as my wrists are fairly unstable, I once tried to do the other side thing...

Never ever again.

Just moving the hose to the car on the same side can be quite painful! You never know what reason someone might have for not doing something that you think is no bother!

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 17/11/2018 17:56

I use both sides.

I don’t have enough time in my life to analyse people’s fuel station etiquette to have ever noticed what other people do.

Flyinggeese · 17/11/2018 18:06

OP couldn't agree more - this is annoying - it DOES imact others who have to queue behind the person who can't seem to figure out that if you just position the car slightly forward the hose drapes round the back of even the largest cars no problem at all. Not 'wanting to scratch the car' is a big excuse.

Some of the excuses on here make me worried for people actually being in charge of a car!

MrsZola · 17/11/2018 18:11

I don't know if this is actually true, but my great uncle who helped design the multi fuel type pumps, told me never to stretch the hose round or over the car because there's a bit of fuel that stays in the hose that you end up paying for. It all adds up!Wink

allhdghd · 17/11/2018 18:26

mrs

There is always a bit of fuel in the hose. Just think logically about it, you got the bit the person before you left behind.

PlatypusPie · 17/11/2018 18:27

It had never occurred to me that people would be seething and wanting to police how other people fill their cars - though I was also bemused at the demented and angry support for the ‘fling all your goods into the Aldi trolley without packing at the till ‘ thread recently, so I should not be too surprised.

After seeing this earlier, I took a look around my usual petrol station when I was filling up just now ( correct side, bite me) - very busy supermarket one, 20 pumps, not a single one being used with the hose accessing the other side. Partly due to the bad layout of the pumps - they are quite tight up to the building, meaning easy exit from the centre aisle depends on the front cars on both sides not being too far forward so ‘ just pull forward in front of the pump’ is neither usually possible nor popular and partly the existence of the large area before the pumps where there is plenty of room to enter and wait your turn.

Not all fuel station layouts are the same though and sometimes cars do have to wait or can’t get in immediately to access a tantalisingly empty pump. But fuming at someone else’s perfectly reasonable choice to use the pump in the default normal manner is slightly ridiculous and only going to self generate stress.

DaveTheDesigner · 17/11/2018 18:36

“I snapped my flap doing this, so I don't recommend it.”

Sounds painful 😂
