just stretch the hose over your sodding car

I don't fill the car with fuel that often as it's mainly just used for around time.

Every time I go to the petrol station the access is blocked by people queuing for a pump on the "correct" side of their car.

If I can stretch the hose over my mum-bus people carrier, you can stretch it over your ford fiesta.

Petrol station etiquette should definitely be on the driving test.

Yes I live in the uk and have used supermarket pumps. There are 2 buttons, one for pay at pump one for kiosk. Nothing else.

BadgersBiggestFan · 17/11/2018 09:37

Djnoun sounds painful!

LanceStatersGold · 17/11/2018 09:38

I can’t do this - anything like that triggers inflammation in my joints, eg I can cope with holding the trigger but having to do that AND support the stretching of the hose would be a no no. I know because I’ve tried.

I mean, I could still do it, but it would probably be likely that I then couldn’t drive away for an hour whilst my painkillers kick in, which was what would have happened had my grandparents not arrived at the same time so my grandad could drive me out.

busbottom · 17/11/2018 09:38

not

Have a look at the side of the screen where the dispensing amount shows.

I've never stopped at a pump that doesn't reach both sides of the car, and I've been driving for a long time in various vehicle.

I had a Saturday job in a manned petrol station where we put fuel in for customers (so a very long time ago), and even back then the pumps would reach both sides of bigger vehicles as long as the driver had stopped in a sensible position i.e. slightly further forward so the hose goes around the back instead of over the top.

BadgersBiggestFan · 17/11/2018 09:46

There’s something about being on a forecourt that makes me feel watched and I do everything possible not to make a twat of myself. The shame of the lady shouting over the tannoy is too much!

NotUmbongoUnchained · 17/11/2018 09:47

I’ve definitely never seen anything like that!

ForalltheSaints · 17/11/2018 09:50

If you are unaware of (or cannot remember) which side of the vehicle you fill your car up in, or cannot wait a couple of minutes for a suitable pump, I wonder if you should be driving at all.

Allowing petrol stations to make a higher charge would put a stop to most of this behaviour.

Jojobythesea · 17/11/2018 09:54

Agree. Drives me nuts.

PattiStanger · 17/11/2018 10:06

Barbie - what kind of 7 seater do you have? Of course you can use the “wrong” side for them, I did it for years and never found a pump that wouldn't stretch.

I don't get why you can't see how much petrol you're putting in, unless you drive a van don't you just look at the pump through the car window?

donquixotedelamancha · 17/11/2018 10:07

Nobody needs to apologise or excuse not being able to pull the hose across. Ques are not caused by the small number of people who can't use both sides, or by people who don't want to when it's quiet, but by the people who won't, even if they are blocking the way in.

Willow2017 · 17/11/2018 10:48

I can't because I have a 7 seater, so you'll just have to wait

Why cant you?

The hose reaches round the back of a car if you park a few inches forward of the pump.
Never found one that didnt with my 7 seater.

This. Nobody on the thread has criticised someone with a genuine reason not to do it.

BakedBeans47 · 17/11/2018 10:52

Why does that bamboozle you??

Because I have no idea why you wouldn’t be able to see it just because you’re not standing right next to it?!

NotUmbongoUnchained · 17/11/2018 10:53

Because I can’t see over the top of my car??? Is that really hard to grasp?

bluebump · 17/11/2018 10:56

I have certain pumps I like to use because they are the ones that do the super unleaded but I’ll happily drag the hose over my car so will just queue at whichever looks the most free.

What annoys me is when I don’t need fuel but just want to go and pump my tyres up yet I can’t get through to get to the air machine because someone is parked right in the middle of the start of the petrol station to make sure that nobody gets by and they get the first available pump.

BakedBeans47 · 17/11/2018 11:01

Do you use pumps designed for midgets?

VisitorsEntrance · 17/11/2018 11:02

I’m always interested at threads like this where people cannot imagine anything outside their own personal experience, like petrol stations where the hoses don’t reach or where there is no ‘pay at the pump’ facility.

It’s like when people cannot imagine a front door without a handle.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 17/11/2018 11:03

Wtf are you talking about. I need to see over the top of my car to see the screen, which I can’t. Fortunately I’m in a position where I don’t need to watch how much I’m putting in the car but some people do.

BakedBeans47 · 17/11/2018 11:03

Or if you drive the car forward to get the hose round you can surely see round it?

As I said I don’t care what people do but this reason makes no sense.

BakedBeans47 · 17/11/2018 11:05

On every petrol pump I’ve ever used in my 25 years of driving I have never seen one that you couldn’t see from the other side of the car.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 17/11/2018 11:05

Are you 5ft tall?

Fromage · 17/11/2018 11:13

My hearty congratulations to the genetics lottery winners who can stretch the hose over their car with grace, poise, and no doubt a double pirouette.

I'm not going to berate myself for being less able than you in any way. I'll fill my car however I damn choose and you crack on and fill your boots judging me.

allhdghd · 17/11/2018 11:14

If people can't see the amount from the other side of the car they really should not be driving. You don't have to look over the top of the car, when fuelling from the other said you drive the car forward of the screen, use the hose round the back of the car.

allhdghd · 17/11/2018 11:15

Just to add I don't care how anyone fills their car, but some of the reasons people are giving are not actually reasons.
