To be shit-scared of the rise of fascism across the world?

thentherewerefour · 16/11/2018 12:57

Many of us have started meeting at the Feminist Anti-Fascist Assembly in London because while we are shit scared about rising fascism in the UK and also Brazil, Poland, US to name but a few - we want to organise as feminists and also fight back on our own terms. Below is the call out we wrote for a demonstration in London on the International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women - 25th Nov. Here is the FB event www.facebook.com/events/655349138192873/

(ps: for those on here who hate trans women and sex workers - don't bother responding with your hate - we have all heard it enough - and quite frankly its old and boring.)

Reclaim the Fight: Feminists Rise Up Against Fascism
Sunday 25 November 2018
5PM - BBC Portland Place, London W1A 1AA

Women’s work makes life possible. For this we are rewarded with violence and exploitation in the streets, at work and at home. We’re told that our inferior position in society, and our suffering, are inevitable - even natural. We still earn less and are expected to put up with disrespect, discrimination and assault at work and in our communities. We have had enough. In solidarity and righteous feminist rage, we are fighting back across the world.

It’s ok to be scared. A fascist has just been elected as President in Brazil. In the US a white supremacist murdered eleven Jewish people in their synagogue and white nationalists have been elected to Congress. The Trump Administration has launched a deadly attack on transgender people’s right to exist and anti-trans feminists in Britain are using their powerful standing to target trans people, and trans women in particular. The Israeli government continues to commit genocide against the Palestinian people with weapons sold to them by the UK. The Polish President included far-right groups as co-organisers of the official state celebrations of the National Independence Day, thus legitimising their anti-migrant and white-supremacist rhetoric. The fascist Turkish government has invaded and occupied the Kurdish city of Afrin in Rojava/northern Syria and is working with genocidal groups in the Middle East to try and defeat the Kurdish revolution and, in particular, its women-led resistance. Tommy Robinson continues to be given legitimacy by the mainstream media despite inspiring a racist murder in Finsbury Park. He pretends to care about victims of child abuse to provoke fears that our Muslim brothers are a threat to ‘our’ women - as if he has ownership over women. Yet he says nothing when our rapists are white.

It’s ok to be angry. For decades we have watched the earth being destroyed and our communities ripped apart. Across the UK migrants and people of colour are harassed by police and surveilled at school and university through the Prevent programme, while nearly every youth centre has been shut down. Decent well-paid work is becoming harder to find and many of us work in jobs that pay poverty wages and strip us of our dignity. Austerity policies have caused millions of families to rely on food banks to feed their kids. Thousands of disabled people have died because of benefit sanctions. For as long as we can remember, survivors have bravely spoken about being raped and abused, and even after #MeToo, we are still not believed.

It’s ok to fight back. Feminists across the world are leading the resistance against fascism. Kurdish women and their internationalist comrades, such as British anti-fascist feminist Anna Campbell, have been resisting the brutal patriarchal attacks of ISIS who assault and mutilate the bodies of women as part of a wider tactic of using sexual violence as a tool of war. Our fight to end rape and sexual violence is the fight against fascism. At the heart of fascism is a set of ideas that views certain women as the only legitimate “breeders”. Women’s role is as mothers whose bodies are at the service of men and the nation. The fight for abortion rights from Poland, Northern Ireland, Brazil, and Argentina, to name just a few, is a fight against fascism and a struggle to regain control of our own bodies and lives.

Reclaim the Fight: Feminists Rise Up Against Fascism is for people of all and no genders. We need your help to build a feminist anti-fascist movement that is capable of opposing the far-right and ending gender violence. We particularly welcome the participation of trans women, non-binary people and sex workers who are often excluded from feminist mobilisations. The Reclaim the Fight: Women Rise Up Against Fascism demonstration is endorsed by:

Feminist Anti-Fascist Assembly; Kurdish Women’s Assembly; Kurdish Student Union; Women’s Strike Assembly; Dziewuchy London; Brazilian Women Against Fascism; Women’s March London; Women United
The x:talk project; Ni Una Menos UK

Sounds good. Before I sign up, how are you defining "woman"?

IsSheWeird · 16/11/2018 13:10

So tiresome your (those who hate trans women and sex workers) didn't bother to read. Seriously wtf, give your head a wobble

Katemelham · 16/11/2018 13:14

Yeyy, reclaim the night sounds great. Going to spread it in my group in Brockley

teaandtoast · 16/11/2018 13:15

feminism

/ˈfɛmɪnɪz(ə)m/

noun

the advocacy of women's rights..

TreasureGoblin · 16/11/2018 13:15

Sounds great, i’ll there. And anybody who tries to hijack this opportunity to start policing gender, you’ll just be treated as fascists.

madvixen · 16/11/2018 13:17

Why is someone who believes women can't have penises, a facist?

SwearyG · 16/11/2018 13:18

Hate sex workers? You have a very peculiar view of the issues feminist have with men renting the insides of women's bodies.

You can keep your "feminism" that suggests some women should exist for men's pleasure and shove it up your arse.

ReflectionsofParadise · 16/11/2018 13:21

You're not a woman or female if you have a penis. How does that make me facist? Shit. Human Biology must be a facist cult 🤫

TreasureGoblin · 16/11/2018 13:24

No one cares. If you’re upset about the inclusivity of all genders, don’t go.

Racecardriver · 16/11/2018 13:26

Is facism actually on the rise or is it just more visible because we are departing from centrist politics so all extremes are more visible.

TreasureGoblin · 16/11/2018 13:26

Also, “human biology” suggests you can be only one or the other if you stopped learning biology at KS2 level lol. If you make it past Year 6, you’ll know that’s not the case. Sorry that you didn’t get that far!

ReflectionsofParadise · 16/11/2018 13:28

@SwearyG I do have to ask what about women who pay men to make use of their insides?

Or women that willingly enjoy being paid to fuck? (albeit rare)

You may come back with some convoluted answer to deny that it could even be possible or ever be an autonomous decision but I assure you it is possible and does happen.

Or are you another that is so blinkered by 'rights' and ingrained misogyny without even realising it (oh the fucking irony, right?!) that the thought of a woman being in control in that situation is entirely alien and 'impossible'?

Genuinely curious.

OvaHere · 16/11/2018 13:31

Your anger about men's control and expectation of service from the bodies of women seems at odds with a pro sex work agenda (not the people but the concept). Calling it work rather than the abuse it actually is just legitimises it's continuation.

I really don't understand 3rd wave feminism. It seems like a mass of contradictions that help no one and doesn't actually centre women and girls.

SwearyG · 16/11/2018 13:43

Reflections you don’t sound genuinely curious, as you have already decided what you think my position is.

I think that there are women who choose to sell their bodies but that choice isn’t made in a vacuum, it’s made in a patriarchy, a world where men seem to think they have a right to sex. In doing so they become part of the problem - ensuring the world where men think it is acceptable to buy sex continues. A world where women are trafficked and abused for this purpose.

I’m sure this won’t satisfy you and you’ll accuse me of being blinkered or whatever but there we go. Opinions, we all have them. I was just pointing out that the OP telling us we hate sex workers was wrong. It’s not the women (or, as no doubt you’ll point out, the men too) who are prostituted that are hated. It’s the industry.

BartholomewsCat · 16/11/2018 14:01

At the heart of fascism is a set of ideas that views certain women as the only legitimate “breeders”. Women’s role is as mothers whose bodies are at the service of men and the nation. The fight for abortion rights from Poland, Northern Ireland, Brazil, and Argentina, to name just a few, is a fight against fascism and a struggle to regain control of our own bodies and lives

You do realise these issues aren't exclusive to white fascists don't you? For example, in Pakistan the rape and murder of women and children by men of the same ethnicities? Abortion is legal in most European countries - Poland, Sweden and Ireland are exceptions not the rule. Most African and Asian countries have restrictions on abortion - Yemen, Syria, Iran, etc etc - its patriarchy not fascism causing the problems.

(I'm not a white supremacist, pro-facist, anti trans, mysogonistic ball of hatred by the way)

Bezalelle · 16/11/2018 14:07

I've studied fascism and anti-fascism quite extensively, and the TRA movement bears many of the hallmarks, to be honest.

gendercritter · 16/11/2018 14:24

Dear Lord

scatterolight · 16/11/2018 14:25

Are you also this unhinged about Islam OP?

gendercritter · 16/11/2018 14:27

We particularly welcome the participation of trans women, non-binary people and sex workers who are often excluded from feminist mobilisations

Now, now, it's not very inclusive of you to leave out woc and disabled women op. My wheelchair has a marvellous flame-thrower attached to it.

Although I am picturing you gathering an army of trans-women and non-binary men people dressed up in black with black face masks and Alsatians. You might well inspire quite a lot of fear and engender some change with such a mob. Hmm

UpstartCrow · 16/11/2018 14:28

No one here hates trans people or prostituted women.

Elfinablender · 16/11/2018 14:29

And anybody who tries to hijack this opportunity to start policing gender, you’ll just be treated as fascists.

Oh, that's interesting. What other matters can people expect to be treated as a facist for?

TreasureGoblin · 16/11/2018 14:32

UpstartCrow, judging from the level of vitriolic responses I beg to differ.

mothertruck3r · 16/11/2018 14:35

Weird that Israel and Turkey are mentioned but nothing about the appalling apartheid treatment of Christians in Pakistan - Asia Bibi who has been persecuted by the Islamists in Pakistan for having the temerity to be a Christian WOMAN, let alone the fascists in Iran and Saudi Arabia who arrest WOMEN for having the temerity to not want to wear a headscarf. Talk about being selective!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 16/11/2018 14:39

I'd really love it if we could talk about the rise of facism and its consequences for feminism tbh.

But it ain't gonna happen on here right now

gendercritter · 16/11/2018 14:40

You know what is interesting op? In the Facebook banner, there are men demonstrating. They are wearing black and have their faces covered. And apparently this is a child-friendly event?

In peaceful demonstrations where you're making a stand against, you don't need to dress in an intimdating manner or hide your identity.
