Just had a relaxing afternoon as my DD (6) has an after school activity today. Parked up outside the school early, have a leisurely moment, stroll up to pick her up; only to discover I'm half an hour late. They've tried calling my mobile (I left it at home), they've called work and my husband (who is going out of his mind with worry), I'm mortified.

DD happy; she got to go to after school club and eat pizza.

AIBU to ask you about your parent failures to make me feel better....?

Years ago my son pulled his rugby top out of his bag in the PE changing rooms at school to find 3 pairs of my thongs attached to the velcro.@pumpkinpie01 I think I love you a little bit 😂

@ShockedHorrored I slammed the car door on my DD's (10) face as she was getting out of the car. I forgot she was in there and other DD (then 5) had decided to get out of the other side of the car. In my defence, it was dark...

My DH left the front door keys hanging in the lock overnight whilst us and our very tiny baby slept.

I sent ds to nursery in shorts one day and thought he was walking silly. Shuffling along. Just thought he was being a silly bugger.
When I picked him up i found I'd dressed him with both legs through one pant leg. Poor thing didn't have room to move his legs.

What baffled me though was that nursery hadn't noticed Confused

I had to drop DS at junior school at 8.50 then DD at infant school next door at 8.55. Got to the juniors to take DS in and was greeted by his teacher asking if I could help that morning with walking the children up to the swimming pool. Was delighted to be able to help. "Great!" says the teacher, "Come on inside, and we'll get the day-glow tabards out of the cupboard". In I went. Kitted all the kiddies out in fluorescent yellow, lest we lose sight of one of them on the short walk to the pool, supervised swimming changing rooms, watched the lesson, supervised getting all dry and back to the school.

Then I looked at my mobile phone (phones not allowed out of bags in the pool, for obvious reasons) and found a message from a friend who had found my DD wandering in the junior playground at 9am, wondering where Mummy was.

I don't think I'll ever forgive myself for actually forgetting about my DD. Just the most awful feeling.

Brett My DM used to use old margarine tubs as Tupperware. Which was fine until the day she sent me into school with a tub of margarine instead of my sandwiches ...

Pericombobulations · 16/11/2018 14:44

Glad to see I'm not the only one who has forgotten non uniform days - mine refused to let me get him a change of clothes.

DH left his car and house keys in his car door overnight - we lived on a main bus route at the time - we were very lucky that no one took them or the car

DS1 started school on full days.
2 years later DS2 starts school...

The new parents' meeting had clashed with Beavers (leader) and DH was away so I hadn't gone to it.

My first day of freedom of the school year, I go for a nice quick run to celebrate and get home to find neighbours with their yR child home from school already. School had changed the policy to half days for the first week (this information being buried halfway down page 14 of the new starters book which I'd glazed over as old news long before that page)

I swore, vaulted over the front wall and having not stopped my sports watch, recorded a personal fastest speed of 3:45 min/km which remains unbeaten Grin

my daughter was moved to a new school due to stock transfer of our house it was when i saw children walking home from that school id realised she missed her first day completely i got the wrong date stuck in my head luckily the teachers were ok about it.

I once forgot dd's lunch. Suddenly realised I had forgotten it. Then went into local shop to buy her a lunch and had forgotten my wallet too. Ran back out to the car, to discover I had 50p. All I could afford was a banana. Shopkeeper (happened to be the owner) offered to give me a sandwich for her and I could pay him back. In my shame I said No (Why?). Got a very concerned note home about dd's lack of lunch. The absolute shame of it. She had caviar and champagne for lunch for the next month (exaggeration) to show that I'm not a neglectful parent.

Another time, dd tells me 'teacher gave me her lunch because I was hungry'. I used to always just send two triangles of a sandwich (with cheese, fruit etc.), because when she saw too much food she wouldn't eat anything. Again in my immortal shame, she got sent 4 full sized sandwiches afterwards.
She's a skinny little thing so I was full sure they were going to report me for starving her. Shock

Donna1001 · 16/11/2018 15:08

Took DD to school & walked off with her rucksack on my back. Only realised when I was a good half a mile away (walking).

Must have looked a completely idiot walking the dogs round the field with a furry Smiggle rucksack on!

nextdoorscatwantstomovein · 16/11/2018 15:10

Dh and I sat watching telly about 10pm, dd1 and2(15+11) had gone to bed when suddenly there was a load of banging from upstairs. We were just about to shout at them when it stopped, shortly afterwards it started again the stopped on the third time we shouted at them to settle down. The reply-but I'm locked in the bathroom-dd2 had gone to the toilet and the lock handle had come off on the inside of the door, she been locked in there for half an hour. Thankfully the lock is one that can be opened from the outside but she was not amused!

peachgreen · 16/11/2018 15:11

Pretty sure DD said her first word this morning... and it was DUGGEE. Blush

(I'm really hoping I misheard. I swear I only ever have it on when I'm throwing my clothes on in the morning, honest!)

Rixera · 16/11/2018 15:15

Also our boiler has packed in and it is sleeting so after nursery DD will be snuggling in blankets on the sofa in our cold, draughty house to play videogames on daddy's laptop all evening. Too cold to parent.

pumpkinpie01 · 16/11/2018 15:16

@toothfairy73 you've made me laugh too, this thread is really cheering me up !

Hotfootit · 16/11/2018 15:36

When small my kids used to be allowed to leave home just before me and scooter to the end of the road whilst I got my bike and caught up with them (about 5m round the corner). I would then cross us all over the ‘big’ road.
One day I got to the end of the road and couldn’t see my kids anywhere.
Finally, went back home to see I could see them and as I arrived at my house I saw two little faces on tiptoes, peering through the window on the door. I’d locked them in and gone without them Blush

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 16/11/2018 15:52

Took kids to school and realised it was an inset day.

Sent daughter to a stranger's birthday party.

Left the house to join the rest of the family for a party. Halfway there I had call from my son. "Where are you?" I had locked him in the house without any way of getting out.

Went out to lunch after church. We were about to order and realised youngest daughter wasn't with us. We'd forgot to tell her we were going.

toothfairy73 · 16/11/2018 16:08

I once met some one mildly famous and a huge hero. He was talking to me and my then 2 year old DD kept tugging at my arm. I said "in a minute darling"... continued the conversation; cue 2 seconds later when we both see her heavy pull up nappy fall down around her ankles - GROUND OPEN AND SWALLOW ME UP

She has come home with a few notes along the lines of "small pigeon complained that her shoes were tight in PE today - she may need a size bigger" before I've remembered that I haven't replaced her plimsolls in a year.

Not long ago I spotted the back of my child on the school website sports day news story in shorts so short that they could have been pants! I hadn’t even considered that when he needed new trousers as he got taller then his shorts would need replacing too.

I asked why he hadn’t told me, he said he didn’t know they were too small Hmm

Donna1001 · 16/11/2018 17:04

I slammed the car door on my daughters fingers. She was trapped, screaming her head off.

Think she was about 3 at the time.

Rogueone · 16/11/2018 17:54

DC4 was starting a new pre school nursery in September. I had read all the info, attended all the welcome afternoons and evenings. My OH asked two days before he was due to start if our DS needed a uniform but I was very clear that he didn’t as I had read through the information. Turned up with him in jeans and trainers on his first day and the rest were looking fabulous in there full uniform. 😩 mortified .... second day he had his full uniform! Still cringe now thinking of my stupidity....

BellaCat123 · 16/11/2018 17:57

Mine seem to have a theme!

Got baby out of the swimming pool only to realise I hadn’t packed any nappies 😕 the pool was a 20 minute walk from home so I hadn’t even taken a changing bag.

Also managed (and I don’t know how) to put the baby in the bath with a nappy still on. I was so tired it took me ages to work out what was wrong with the picture.

ConciseandNice · 16/11/2018 17:59

I very literally forgot to pick my sons up from school. Forgot my kids. Completely. It took an hour for the school to get through to me.

TokyoSushi · 16/11/2018 18:02

We had quite a few turn up in full children in need non uniform/pyjamas/spots/fancy dress today, it was just normal uniform!!
