I really usually enjoy the JL Christmas ad but this year it’s bloody awful!

Don't like it all because I really don't like Elton John. I know he is a talented musician but he's full of his own self importance, which is fuelled even more by this advert.

agedknees · 16/11/2018 14:36

Hate this advert. Love the Aldi kevin the carrot one though.

SinkGirl · 16/11/2018 15:15

Yes, that one is by far the best John Lewis advert - even thinking about it gets me a bit teary. I watched it the other day and got all misty as soon as he started wolfing down his peas - I think it’s a combo of the nostalgia of feeling that excited about anything, but then the twist of his excitement being about giving to his parents just breaks me. And I never cry at things but that bloody advert kills me. The penguin one got me too.

loveandstuffing · 16/11/2018 16:44

What year was that, @SinkGirl?

Samcro · 16/11/2018 16:51

just seen it, I love Elton. but its just an Elton advert. wheres Christmas?

TansyViolet · 16/11/2018 16:54

2011

ZazieQueneau · 16/11/2018 16:55

John Lewis is just crap now, full stop.

PunishmentSnart · 16/11/2018 17:01

I'm crying at my desk!

Haisuli · 16/11/2018 17:23

I think it's beautiful..love the song anyway, and it moved me a lot. EJ is part of us like JL is, i think it is gorgeous and different and I really hope EJ out his fee to enormous good use

averylongtimeago · 16/11/2018 17:24

Sorry if this has been said, but it's a very good advert for Elton, has he got a book/record out soon?

But it's not an advert for either John Lewis or Christmas imho.

Oh, and 71 is old. I am 60, and am "late middle aged" and a Grandma.

Mummadeeze · 16/11/2018 17:37

I didn’t think I would like it as I am not particularly an Elton John fan but I just loved the concept. I dream of my child having an artistic fantastic career and try my best to inspire her and expose her to all the arts at a young age. This was moving and resonated with me. It was no different to seeing David Beckham receive his first football etc. but whether you like Elton John or not, you can’t argue with his level of success.

user1467536289 · 16/11/2018 17:46

I thought it was advertising an Elton John film but had a lightbulb moment and said "this is John Lewis!!!" Lo and behold - it was :-)
I do like Elton, can sit through that a few times and there were some good clips in it.

The Sainsbury's plug in the socket is still the best memory of this Christmas though!!

ArntNise · 16/11/2018 17:52

Just an ad for Elton John's film that is coming out next year.
John Lewis has done better.

user1480021549 · 16/11/2018 17:53

Not the best Christmas ad by JL. Don't really see what it has to do with Christmas. The ending was ok when he ripped paper off to see his pressie but not overly ecstatic. I prefer aldi's ad.

BumbleBeee69 · 16/11/2018 17:57

I love this John Lewis Elton Advert Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/11/2018 17:58

I enjoyed it, but as a PP said - it's an ad for Elton John, His Life And Times.

vale46 · 16/11/2018 18:06

maddiemookins16mum yes - what you said. I can't stand him!

Findingdotty · 16/11/2018 18:06

I didn't really understand it as an advert. Do they sell Elton John's to take home now? Not sure the link to JL or Christmas really? Just felt like Elton John fancied a bit more money in the bank and has cashed in on a terrible idea by a marketing executive.

OliviaStabler · 16/11/2018 18:07

Maybe Elton paid for the whole thing?

Kindlethefourth · 16/11/2018 18:08

Smacks of advertising his film not John Lewis plus didn't he fall out with his mother for years??

LAlady · 16/11/2018 18:12

I love it. Found it emotional, as did my teenage DD.

Iseveryusernametaken · 16/11/2018 18:17

@OliviaStabler no, apparently the advert cost £5m to make, of which £3m was his fee. It was announced however that he made a sizeable donation to the charity that he founded.

GabsAlot · 16/11/2018 18:18

its a massive elton john plug its not about xmas and he only donated a portion of his fee for it

hes not a nice person

Ihatebreakfast · 16/11/2018 18:22

I started my career as a graduate trainee with john Lewis. In the early 90s. In those days, they "didn't advertise because their business was so good they could rely on word of mouth". I remember getting royally rollocked by the training manager when I suggested they should advertise...And now, every magazine you open is chock full of John Lewis/Waitrose adverts and they spend millions on their Christmas TV ad. Times change I guess!!

Susiesoap7 · 16/11/2018 18:23

Totally agree gabsalot! He is not a good person
