I really usually enjoy the JL Christmas ad but this year it’s bloody awful!

OP posts:

I like the Heathrow one but not sure why they have to advertise.

AgathaRaisinDetra · 15/11/2018 20:20

I wish they'd featured this piano in the advert. Little EJ unwraps this beauty!

CloserIAm2Fine · 15/11/2018 20:22

Very underwhelming imo

I like the Sainsbury’s one much better (Sainsbury’s was my favourite last year too)

Sparklingbrook · 15/11/2018 20:23

The Sainsburys one is very like the John Lewis one from a couple of months ago with Bohemian Rhapsody.

dementedma · 15/11/2018 20:24

how did they manage to find a baby Elton? that little boy is a dead ringer

maddiemookins16mum · 15/11/2018 20:54

Ha ha, this has made my day.

AIBU to think the John Lewis Christmas ad is crap?
Boyskeepswinging · 15/11/2018 21:02

Maddie, that is brilliant! But I do like the idea that you have no idea how one gift can spark an interest in a child whether that is a piano or a sewing machine or a football ...

Avegemitesandwich · 15/11/2018 21:12

Oh I just got 'Elton John Lewis'!

EggysMom · 15/11/2018 21:14

I like the idea of a well-known talented individual reminiscing about a Christmas present that sparked his talent. I'd have enjoyed it if the advert contained other individuals as someone else suggested, maybe Beckham opening his first pair of football boots or Nicky Clarke unwrapping a Girls World head Grin I even like the idea of the song being someone's gift.

But I feel like I've watched an Elton John biopic. The entire advert does not need to be about him. There's a film next year, presumably JL aren't sponsoring that? So who thought it would be a good idea to make him the entire focus of this campaign? As I think it's missed the mark, we're all too cynical.

TSSDNCOP · 15/11/2018 21:26

You definitely couldn’t call a piano single use plastic like most DC will get at Christmas.

I thought it was good, I like the angle they’re taking and I really like that Elton’s fee is going to his foundation and that you can’t buy a cuddly Elton.

weeboysmummy · 15/11/2018 21:28

I liked it, particularly the ending, but I love that song; was first dance at our wedding and I even like the various covers that have been done over the years!

skinoncustard · 15/11/2018 22:19

Since JL's profits have plummeted, I would think the reported 7million this advert cost could have been better used elsewhere.
Elton John would probably have been paid a pretty penny for his cameo appearance.
Not that keen on the advert .

Rachelover40 · 15/11/2018 22:32

I like it very much but I'm a long term Elton fan so I would.

fredleighton · 15/11/2018 22:34

I didn't like it at all.

Unlike the one with the little boy with the penguin. I cried every time I saw it.

Honeyroar · 15/11/2018 22:39

I liked the last few seconds, it kind of finally made sense. And I liked that it wasn't a shit cover version for a change. Other than that, nope, but I've never thought they were that good anyway.

Santaclarita · 15/11/2018 22:45

I liked it. But it didn't advertise john Lewis in any way so not sure what the point of it was. It was sweet though, but didn't he always have a bad relationship with his mother?

HelenaDove · 15/11/2018 23:59

as far im im concerned Aldi wins this years hands down

Can someone tell me why its John Lewis AND PARTNERS now?

Travelledtheworld · 16/11/2018 00:05

I think it's great, I am going to watch it constantly until Christmas.
And as for that adorable little boy who does just look like a Mini Elton......

Probably won't buy anything from JLP though !

LillianGish · 16/11/2018 06:54

didn't he always have a bad relationship with his mother? I think that's actually hinted at in the ad which is why he looks so sad at the end - there's an extra level of poignancy, looking back at where it all began, reflecting that his mum is no longer there while the piano is.

2bright · 16/11/2018 06:57

It's a Lidl bit funny

Oh that is just brilliant maddiemookins16mum. Love it.

Mayra1367 · 16/11/2018 07:03

Prefer the Iceland ad.
Wonder if Elton donated his fee to charity ?

unexpectedtwist · 16/11/2018 07:09

Can't bear Elton John. John Lewis can jog on if that's how they think they'll attract my business 😟

I was going into Cheltenham today and panned to look around the new store there but I might not on principle. 😁

LillianGish · 16/11/2018 07:09

Sorry, meant to add that he didn't always have a bad relationship with his mum, but fell out with her when he married David Furnish. They were reconciled before she died.

nottakingthisanymore · 16/11/2018 07:17

Load of rubbish. Hated it.

PeroniZucchini · 16/11/2018 07:17

It’s a lovely advert for Elton John. And pianos.
