I really usually enjoy the JL Christmas ad but this year it’s bloody awful!

Wiki says EJ was raised in a council house by his maternal grandparents. Is that not true then?

SinkGirl · 15/11/2018 15:43

A stethoscope given to a small child who ends up saving a life might be a more worthy ethos.

Completely agree, except that’s not the ad they’ve made. I didn’t say you personally didn’t get it, but clearly some of the commenters here are so tuned into the commercialisation that they can’t figure out why it’s not advertising a product they can buy.

And I’m not an EJ fan myself, but I thought it was well done.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/11/2018 16:01

I think It’s a great song, but nothing to do with Christmas. I love a bit of Elton, and at least it’s not some breathy, wispy cover version Ellie Golding. But I do like a proper Christmas ad, with a Christmassy song.

I assume John Lewis aren’t going to be selling mountains of unnecessary plastic tat and gift sets this year then, and instead only selling wholesome gifts that will (or could) enrich lives.....

Bertram yes, me too. Probably because it costs a fortune to get them tuned and there’s no volume control!

LittleLionMansMummy · 15/11/2018 16:11

Sinkgirl that's not the ad they made, no. And I don't like the one they've made for the reasons I've stated. But it's probably bang on the money for most of their target audience. And people are talking about it, as they always do - so job done in that respect. It's divided opinion much more than previous years I think.

Sorry for getting grumpy. It's a Christmas ad when all is said and done. Good will to all etc. Smile The Sainsbury's one had us in tears for other reasons last night - that kid in the plug outfit throwing himself/ herself into the socket had us in stitches.

OutPinked · 15/11/2018 16:14

I didn't know John Lewis sold pianos.

^^ this was the exact comment I made when I saw it earlier.

I didn’t like the animated adverts of recent years either though.

CoolCarrie · 15/11/2018 16:24

He is very involved in the film according to the actor who plays him when he was on Graham Norton last week, so no doubt he will show himself in the best possible light.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 15/11/2018 17:02

a Bit like Brian May and the Freddie Biopic then.

Bunchofdaffodils · 15/11/2018 17:08

Aw thanks, op. Hadn’t seen it yet but it’s very sweet. Glad I had a tissue handy.

CandyAppleRed · 15/11/2018 17:12

Elton John was recently in a Snickers advert as well wasn't he?

I thought the ad was a bit meh, I think I liked the Snowman and Snowlady one best from a few years ago

RomanyRoots · 15/11/2018 17:13

Do they even sell Pianos.
nice avert, quite sincere in message, but you'd be pissed off if you went to buy a child a Piano.

Aragog · 15/11/2018 17:43

RomanyRoots

Yes, they do:

Aragog · 15/11/2018 17:46

Sainsbury's is much better.

Yes, but I just feel that the Sainsbury's one is too much like the one which JL/Waitrose did earlier this year. Both children's school plays.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 15/11/2018 17:46

I saw it this morning. I have to confess I was a bit confused at first, wondering what made it a Christmas advert, but I liked the ending and I thought the message was a good one. And yes, I did find myself tearing up at the end - hasn't he recently lost his Mum or have I imagined that?

WarCat · 15/11/2018 17:47

It's a bloody advert... why do people actually look forward to them enough to be disappointed by them?! Crazy.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/11/2018 18:09

They’ve added a few since I first read this thread then! Grinmaybe they’re expecting a rush....

Exactly. There are people on my Facebook who get excited because the shit Coke advert is on TV. It’s weird.

EJ is an odd choice. He comes across as pretty unpleasant. I’m surprised they were allowed to change the show theme tunes to match the advert. I thought there were rules about separating ads and TV shows.

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 15/11/2018 18:57

I love that song.

Hated the advert until the end- until then it was an Elton John tribute.

Nothing to do with Christmas really.

Whitecurrants · 15/11/2018 19:27

I thought it was OK, not a patch on Monty but way better than the man on the moon. I loved the Bohemian Rhapsody one, that was always going to be hard to follow.

Janus · 15/11/2018 19:35

Daniel he has recently lost his mum I think but also think he was not in contact with her for a long time until she became ill.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 15/11/2018 19:46

A few years ago The Sun paid for an Elton John look alike to be with her on her birthday as Elton hadn't spoken to her in years.

It was a weird thing to do, but that's The Sun for you

DanielRicciardosSmile · 15/11/2018 19:48

Ahh I thought I'd read she'd died recently, but wasn't sure. I do remember that they were reconciled not long ago - maybe he now regrets the years of estrangement.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 15/11/2018 19:50

Captain really? How bizarre, surely that would be more painful for the poor woman?

Orchiddingme · 15/11/2018 19:51

Who knows why he wasn't in contact with his mum for a period of time? Mn is full of people no or low contact with justifiable reasons.

It wouldn't take away from the fact she supported him in his music in the early days.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 15/11/2018 19:54

Yes really and yes it was bizarre, it might not have been The Sun, it might have been another tabloid.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/11/2018 20:17

I'm not keen, although I do like Elton John. I prefer it to the Sainsbury's one though, that's awful. I like the Heathrow Teddies though.
