...to think that if Comic Relief are going to do a "Woman Wednesday" blog about "inspirational female figures", it should have an inspirational female figure in it?

Comic Relief are doing a new weekly blog, about inspirational women.

"Women Wednesday’s is our new weekly column for Gender Justice month here at Comic Relief, where we will be giving the spotlight to one inspirational female figure per week. We focus on women who have created change and spearheaded movements for other women, and stood up against discrimination against gender and sexuality."

Fantastic, right? They've got links to all kinds of amazing women, working in very challenging conditions across the world, who are helping to create a better world for everyone, not just themselves. What a brilliant blog theme! What brilliant, inspirational woman are we all going to learn about today, I wonder?

Well. Here's who they picked as their "inspirational female figure": www.comicrelief.com/news/women-wednesdays-heres-why-lili-elbe-our-inspirational-figure-week

Women deserve better, Comic Relief. You've really screwed up on this one.

I think that is an incredibly sad story about a person whose illness was exploited by people who wanted to use her as a human experiment for unnecessary and hugely invasive surgery which eventually killed her.

blueskiesandforests · 16/11/2018 10:06

Gingerrogered that's what it looks like to me too - a sad story about someone who was persuaded to pay a lot of money to be experimented on by a doctor who must have known that the chances of success were virtually nil. A sad story for all involved - sister and wife as well as victim.
Prophetic perhaps, but not inspiring in any positive way.

Can anyone point me in the direction of trans men who are/have been celebrated as inspirational men or who are in positions where they speak for men generally? i.e.man of the year, man of the week, men's officer?

It just doesn't seem to happen in reverse - why?

Yes that would be interesting. Could one of our resident trans advocates please point us toward some instances of this occurring.

Seeing as I believe transmen apparently outnumber transwomen it shouldn’t be hard to rustle up loads of great examples.

RatRolyPoly · 16/11/2018 10:39

We don't have "man of the year" or "man of the week" because every day of the year or week is about men's achievements. The reason we have them for women is because of the societal inequality that means women's achievements are frequently underplayed and under-reported.

We also don't have "men's officers" in political parties because men are generally served perfectly well in politics due to having been the "default human" since year dot. "Women's officer" is a post created to promote equality and to ensure that women, typically underrepresented and under-heard, are served in politics.

There are loads of examples of trans men being recognised for their achievements; being named "person of the year" for example. But we don't have specific men's awards because men are not under-recognised in lists of inspirational people. Women are.

That’s great news! Could you point me in the right direction please?

sackrifice · 16/11/2018 10:44

Aren't trans men basically noted for having babies?

Another request for more information on this, please.

I literally just Googled "trans man achievement" - there are no special prizes for being a man; they just, you know, achieve stuff. No-one's making a massive fuss about it because they're just... men. Default human. But if you want to know quite which men out there that are achieving stuff are trans men, I think Google can help.

Sexnotgender · 16/11/2018 10:50

I’ve had a google and can’t really see anything useful.

RatRolyPoly · 16/11/2018 10:51

I'm afraid you typing into Google is just the same as me doing it Smile

I'm surprised anyone thinks there are special "men's" prizes for stuff though. I thought everyone understood why there were women's awards; it's not like there are two categories, there are just achievements and then "oh shit, we've blatantly underplayed all the women who achieve things, better try and remedy that going forward with a women's award!".

RatRolyPoly · 16/11/2018 10:51

What exactly are you looking for Sexnotgender? Trans men who have achieved things in life? You won't find any "top men of the year" lists, obviously.

Sexnotgender · 16/11/2018 10:53

GQ do a man of the year award every year I believe.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 16/11/2018 10:55

I agree about it being an incredibly sad story, there is no inspiration to be found.

RatRolyPoly · 16/11/2018 10:58

Good for them! I don't know anything about that I'm afraid, I don't know if they've chosen to bestow that honour on a trans man to date.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 16/11/2018 10:58

Yes, GC do, Joel Edgerton was the most recent winner.

Sexnotgender · 16/11/2018 11:02

So funny.

Avegemitesandwich · 16/11/2018 11:03

Like people have said before: transwomen make the news for achievements in sport, politics, journalism, the arts, business and just general 'bravery' (eg Caitlyn Jenner getting 'woman of the year').

Transmen make the news for..... having babies.

Avegemitesandwich · 16/11/2018 11:08

It's very obvious that whoever is behind this at Comic Relief chose Elbe for this just to make a 'transwomen are women, fuck you women' point. There is literally no other reason they would have chosen that person, out of all the inspirational women out there, for the first ever 'Woman Wednesday'.

How fucking pathetic.

FekkoThePenguin · 16/11/2018 11:12

Didn't Serena Wiliams win the GQ 'Man of the year' award - didn't it actually say 'Woman' of the year? They didn't pretend she is what she isnt.

Procrastinator1 · 16/11/2018 11:13

Apologies if this has been said before, but this isn't a case of an intern gone rogue. The Comic Relief web site shows Elbe as their woman Wednesday. The CR adverts showing people doing their bit by making cakes and having sales, the children using their pocket money to buy the merchandise etc make me furious. The woke have thrown their efforts in their faces by risking funding by promoting a controversial ideology. To be clear I'm not saying trans women should not be celebrated, but not in this way.

FekkoThePenguin · 16/11/2018 11:18

Have they not said what Elbe did that was so inspirational? Why they should have been given this dubious 'honour'?

I can say that I'm a car and try to have fluffy ears and a tail transplanted from a real cat and demand the right to birth kittens, but it doesnt make me an inspiration.

It may make me many thinks but a cat or inspiration (to a generation of cat wannabes) are not 2 of them.

RiverTam · 16/11/2018 11:18

The mods have now deleted every gender critical comment and switched off further commenting, on all their recent gender-related posts. Makes a mockery of their apparent concern for VAWG when they reduce womanhood and girlhood to identities.

shame on them.

FekkoThePenguin · 16/11/2018 11:19

cat nor car. Saying I'm a car would just be silly.
