...to think that if Comic Relief are going to do a "Woman Wednesday" blog about "inspirational female figures", it should have an inspirational female figure in it?

Comic Relief are doing a new weekly blog, about inspirational women.

"Women Wednesday’s is our new weekly column for Gender Justice month here at Comic Relief, where we will be giving the spotlight to one inspirational female figure per week. We focus on women who have created change and spearheaded movements for other women, and stood up against discrimination against gender and sexuality."

Fantastic, right? They've got links to all kinds of amazing women, working in very challenging conditions across the world, who are helping to create a better world for everyone, not just themselves. What a brilliant blog theme! What brilliant, inspirational woman are we all going to learn about today, I wonder?

Well. Here's who they picked as their "inspirational female figure": www.comicrelief.com/news/women-wednesdays-heres-why-lili-elbe-our-inspirational-figure-week

Women deserve better, Comic Relief. You've really screwed up on this one.

You might acknowledge the gender of trans people, but many don't even acknowledge gender identity!

What do you mean by 'gender identity'? What does 'gender identity' get you? I don't want males in female changing rooms, prisons, refuges because I believe these things should be segregated by sex. I don't really care about gender identity because it doesn't mean anything, there is nothing to acknowledge.

Ffs.

Despite Comic Relief's goals for women and girls to have agency and decisiion making at all levels...
www.comicrelief.com/what-we-do/fighting-for-gender-justice

Comic Relief also 'firmly believes every individual has the right to be who they are and to define their own identity.'

Any man can be a woman if they fancy and women who don't like this can go fuck themselves.

You've got to wonder why women don't just identify themselves out of poverty and oppression.

Lwmommy · 15/11/2018 17:02

ANother thought to add to the list was that if they really wanted to highlight Trans, why not the first woman to become a man?

Why is it always the Male to Female story thats highlighted?

FekkoThePenguin · 15/11/2018 17:08

Cos testicles are too trumps surely?

FekkoThePenguin · 15/11/2018 17:08

Top trumps. Like the card game.

Aeroflotgirl · 15/11/2018 17:18

Ah the mighty penis, keeping women in their place.

Aeroflotgirl · 15/11/2018 17:19

Hopefully next week it might be a trans man or an actual inspirational woman.

FekkoThePenguin · 15/11/2018 17:23

Can we just have a boring old woman? Just once, without it being a sparkly rainbow 'speshul' female just to show how inclusive we all are?

littlbrowndog · 15/11/2018 17:28

How’s lily inspiring to women and girls ?
What did lili do that I should aspire to do ?

FekkoThePenguin · 15/11/2018 17:29

Ill go and see what I can find...

TrashyTerf · 15/11/2018 17:31

You know what's really sad? Elbe died in vain.

Her death should have taught us that it isn't possible to change sex, and we shouldn't delude people into believing that it is. But, we haven't learned that yet. We are still mutilating people for no good reason. If Elbe were born today, she still wouldn't have been given the help she needed.

FekkoThePenguin · 15/11/2018 17:32

Quick look on wiki - nope nothing there apart from painted using boy name and died at 48 (ish) after the surgery but I'm not sure why because who can be bothered with periods or babies at 48?

Ghanagirl · 15/11/2018 18:25

Okay I’ve decided to identify as a white male, just waiting for my privilege to kick in...

RatRolyPoly · 15/11/2018 18:53

If she had been born with female genitals there would have been no need for that to happen.

Saskia there are several references to doctor's reports that she had external make genetalia AND internal female organs, i.e. ovaries. Female sex organs can be a bit harder to spot like that.

FekkoThePenguin · 15/11/2018 18:56

So what was transplanted then?

RatRolyPoly · 15/11/2018 18:57

The intersex society of North America describes those with Klinefelter Syndrome as men.

naicepineapple the association I've linked to up thread explain that if a man has xxy chromosomes he is said to have Klinefelter's syndrome. The only reason women with xxy chromosomes aren't said to have the syndrome is because the feminising symptoms aren't "symptoms" of a syndrome if you're a woman!

The quote is also up thread, so please do tell me if you think I've misinterpreted it.

RatRolyPoly · 15/11/2018 18:57

So what was transplanted then?

It says uterus in the article.

UCWorries · 15/11/2018 18:59

Whats with the Blue Hair comment? I have blue hair Confused

CaveMum · 15/11/2018 19:54

I’m sorry but what is the point in even attempting to transplant a uterus into a male body?! A uterus is not autonomous, in order to function in its usual capacity it requires, you know, female hormones (amongst many other things obviously). They don’t run on “feelz”!

Strikes me as a totally narcissistic move. Hardly an inspirational quality.

FekkoThePenguin · 15/11/2018 19:55

The surgeon must've been bonkers to agree to try it

RatRolyPoly · 15/11/2018 19:57

The surgeon must've been bonkers to agree to try it

Totally agree! In a couple of articles I read though it was said to be one a series of labiaplasties though, not a uterus transplant at all. And that death resulted as a result of a lack of antibiotics. Surely that's more likely to be true?

FekkoThePenguin · 15/11/2018 20:09

Either way absolutely unnecessary.

FadingMint · 15/11/2018 21:53

What a fucking travesty. Comic Relief certainly not getting another penny from me, I'll donate instead to an organisation that is serious about helping actual women and girls.

CaveMum · 15/11/2018 22:57

If people are looking for somewhere to donate, can I suggest you go to Amazon and in the Wishlist section search for Women’s Aid. It will bring you up a list of WA shelters that have a registered Wish List and you can look for one local to you.

The Wish Lists are usually items like toys for children, crockery, bed covers, etc. You can choose something within your budget and it will be delivered direct to the shelter.

There are of course other charities you can search for in the Wish Lists but I think refuges are a good place to start in this context.
