...to think that if Comic Relief are going to do a "Woman Wednesday" blog about "inspirational female figures", it should have an inspirational female figure in it?

Comic Relief are doing a new weekly blog, about inspirational women.

"Women Wednesday’s is our new weekly column for Gender Justice month here at Comic Relief, where we will be giving the spotlight to one inspirational female figure per week. We focus on women who have created change and spearheaded movements for other women, and stood up against discrimination against gender and sexuality."

Fantastic, right? They've got links to all kinds of amazing women, working in very challenging conditions across the world, who are helping to create a better world for everyone, not just themselves. What a brilliant blog theme! What brilliant, inspirational woman are we all going to learn about today, I wonder?

Well. Here's who they picked as their "inspirational female figure": www.comicrelief.com/news/women-wednesdays-heres-why-lili-elbe-our-inspirational-figure-week

Women deserve better, Comic Relief. You've really screwed up on this one.

FFS!

Although no surprise, sadly. It seem that women are only "inspiring" if they're men!

ArcheryAnnie · 15/11/2018 01:41

Also, Comic Relief are connected to god knows how many women whose work is for their betterment of their communities, and they pick a male-bodied person whose entire project was about remaking themselves.

This ^

I've emailed a complaint to Comic Relief about this. I made the point that they could have chosen any one of the many remarkable women who do work for them and the projects they support, but instead they chose to feature a man. I also said that if they wanted to do this they could have run a series on trans individuals, and not included a man in a feature supposedly about women.

They will be getting no money or support from me this year.

GrimSisters · 15/11/2018 01:57

Just had a look at their Twitter. Is ALL about the T.

Mxyzptlk · 15/11/2018 02:04

Their site does say a lot about actual women & girls. Maybe they're hoping to fend off tra attacks by featuring Lily Elbe.

Rhynswynd · 15/11/2018 02:12

Dies after a failed uterus implant. Fucking hell.

For a start, we shouldn't be in a situation where we're having to preface "women and girls" with the word "actual"! Or "real" or "natal" or "biological" or the fucking horrible "cis"!

And any organisation that casually erases women because they might be or are being attacked by TRAs gets neither respect nor money from me!

I think they are quite simply being "woke" and are showing the contempt for women which has been hidden under the thinnest of veneers but it now being encouraged to show itself and applauded for it!

Maybe the Twitter account is run by a woke type nobody's keeping an eye on?

BeUpStanding · 15/11/2018 07:33

Fucking hell! That's a huge stretch of the imagination to classify that man as an inspirational women. Deeply insulting as well.

And YY to this:
Also, Comic Relief are connected to god knows how many women whose work is for their betterment of their communities, and they pick a male-bodied person whose entire project was about remakingthemselves.

goodbyeeee · 15/11/2018 07:34

Fucking hell.

OrchidInTheSun · 15/11/2018 07:52

This is so fucked up. Even if their twitter account is run by someone with blue hair, they have - as a charity - chosen someone who was born male to be their first inspirational woman.

Jammydodger1981 · 15/11/2018 08:00

I’ve complained, I think anyone who is unhappy about this should also do so. Women need to make themselves as vical as TRAs so we’re not sidelined. I know that is sometimes very difficult with the doxxing etc. but this is a perfect opportunity to complain, you can do so via a link on Comic Relief website

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 15/11/2018 08:03

I'll complain too. Does anyone know if Comic Relief also give to Mermaids etc?

sashh · 15/11/2018 08:03

They have a contact tab, her's my message.

Can you please, please find an inspirational woman who does not have a penis? What is so exceptional about putting on a dress and conforming to gender stereotypes? You could pick the first woman in space, the first woman Dr, the first woman boxing champion, nobel prize winners, engineers, teachers, fundraisers. You know one of the thousands of women doing actual things that require work and open doors for others. You have lost a doner for this.

OrchidInTheSun · 15/11/2018 08:11

No they don't Empress (just checked). Actually in their 'gendered justice' stream in the UK they fund rape crisis centres, women's aid, Southall Black Sisters, etc.

Which makes this decision even more idiotic.

Hepzibahr · 15/11/2018 08:11

I'm certainly not feeling inspired by this particular Women Wednesday article.

goodbyeeee · 15/11/2018 08:12

I've also complained.

FekkoThePenguin · 15/11/2018 08:12

It sounds like someone not very bright thought 'hey ho lots jump on the rainbow! That's very on trend these days!'

Have they answered the complaints?

MoaningSickness · 15/11/2018 08:13

Comic Relief are connected to god knows how many women whose work is for their betterment of their communities, and they pick a male-bodied person whose entire project was about remaking themselves.

This. Leaving aside the gender, an inspirational figure is surely one who goes above and beyond in doing things for others or the betterment of humankind. Not just someone who pursues their own wants and desires.

Carriemac · 15/11/2018 08:19

naicepineapple · 15/11/2018 08:27

Absolutely ludicrous. I have started a thread to list who we think are truly inspirational women, if anyone's interested.
I don't know how to link sorry.

treaclesoda · 15/11/2018 08:29

Ironically, if an actual woman behaved like this, being so utterly self centred to the detriment of all else, sacrificing her marriage and eventually her life in pursuit of her desires, she would be roundly condemned for being selfish, not applauded for being inspirational.
