...to think that if Comic Relief are going to do a "Woman Wednesday" blog about "inspirational female figures", it should have an inspirational female figure in it?

Comic Relief are doing a new weekly blog, about inspirational women.

"Women Wednesday’s is our new weekly column for Gender Justice month here at Comic Relief, where we will be giving the spotlight to one inspirational female figure per week. We focus on women who have created change and spearheaded movements for other women, and stood up against discrimination against gender and sexuality."

Fantastic, right? They've got links to all kinds of amazing women, working in very challenging conditions across the world, who are helping to create a better world for everyone, not just themselves. What a brilliant blog theme! What brilliant, inspirational woman are we all going to learn about today, I wonder?

Well. Here's who they picked as their "inspirational female figure": www.comicrelief.com/news/women-wednesdays-heres-why-lili-elbe-our-inspirational-figure-week

Women deserve better, Comic Relief. You've really screwed up on this one.

You're welcome to call me whatever names you like, I'm actually not afraid of that

I honestly don't think I have ever called anyone a name on Mumsnet! Oh, unless perhaps they're literally laying into me, which you're not; I'm truly not someone you need to worry about attacking you on a personal level. Not my vibe Flowers

Doobydoobeedoo · 15/11/2018 09:57

It's like having an "Inspirational Black People" blog and picking Al Jolson.

Insulting.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 15/11/2018 09:58

Well she doesn't inspire me.

Have a day to glorify trans individuals - maybe even start with a women, trans man to show good faith, that it isn't ALL about males.

How do you think a trans man would feel being hailed as an inspirational "woman"? What sort of statement would that be making about your respect for the feelings and the gender identity of the trans community?? Seriously, that would be a massive slap in the face, don't you think? Some glorification!

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 15/11/2018 10:01

FFS yet again.

What a shitty Year of the Woman this turned out to be.

Year of making the word Woman meaningless maybe.

I will be donating to Fair Play for Women instead of Comic Relief this year.

UpstartCrow · 15/11/2018 10:03

Trans Tuesday would have worked. No one is erased by Trans Tuesday,

Penny1976 · 15/11/2018 10:04

Utter nonsense. Woke virtue signalling idiocy.

I too will be donating to FPFW instead of CR.

IStandWithPosie · 15/11/2018 10:04

I’ve complained too.

I’m failing to see how I, as a woman, am supposed to be inspired by this person. What am I supposed to be inspired to do? Wear a dress? Wear make up? Have genital surgery? (Maybe that’s it?? Am I supposed to become a man?) get a uterus? (Have one already) Confused

RiverTam · 15/11/2018 10:06

I really fancy sausages now, haven't had a sausage in ages.

sashh · 15/11/2018 10:06

Oh, unless perhaps they're literally

What is it with the TRAs?

Get a group together and you will always have one with blue hair, and everything is 'literally' when it isn't. Don't any of you own a dictionary?

I think you’ve misunderstood. That poster said “Have a day to glorify trans individuals - maybe even start with a women, trans man” they weren’t suggesting a transman be used for inspirational women blog.

bigKiteFlying · 15/11/2018 10:08

So a woman can only be inspirational if she has a penis? Right that's me told

It's depressing isn't it.

LittleScottieDog · 15/11/2018 10:16

I wonder how many writers would choose, for the first article celebrating inspirational Man Mondays, to write about a woman who transitioned to a man?

For me, I saw the series was about "inspirational women" and immediately thought of my mum, who is amazing in her own right, working for charities and trying to do something to improve life for people she doesn't know.

There are millions more women like her in the world, doing their best to help women escape FGM, or domestic abuse, or extremism, or just helping them get the education they have a right to. Why can't one of those women have been used?

By it being the first article in the series, to me it says that there is no woman more inspirational than this one and no discrimination issue bigger for women than being a trans woman. I don't agree.

(And by saying I don't agree, I don't mean I am against trans people in any way, which is a disclaimer you have to use these days as it seems anyone speaking up with views on thing like this is automatically labelled as a "hater".)

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/11/2018 10:18

How do you think a trans man would feel being hailed as an inspirational "woman"? Did you misread the sentence you quoted? I'm not the only one who noticed...

I said, as you chose to highlight Have a day to glorify trans individuals - maybe even start with a women, trans man”

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/11/2018 10:18

Oh, and I am only being consistent, I don't believe trans men are men either.

Wearegerbil · 15/11/2018 10:19

What a joke, you don't even know out of synch you are with women charities!

I work with women's charities, I know what they think. What they say to keep their funding might be quite different.

Perfectly1mperfect · 15/11/2018 10:28

I wasn't aware of this woman before reading this but can see why some people will find her an inspiration.

As the article says, she did this during a time where transgender and homosexuality were widely un-accepted, unheard of and misunderstood terms. I am sure she suffered a lot of hatred but still did what she needed to do to live a life she could be happy with.

RatRolyPoly · 15/11/2018 10:29

Not to join you in being petty sashh, but I'm not a TRA and I do in fact own a dictionary. Here's what it says about "literally"...

literally
/ˈlɪt(ə)rəli/
adverb
in a literal manner or sense; exactly.
"the driver took it literally when asked to go straight over the roundabout"
synonyms: verbatim, word for word, line for line, letter for letter, to the letter; More

  • INFORMAL
used for emphasis while not being literally true. "I have received literally thousands of letters"

but can see why some people will find her an inspiration.

Which people?

RatRolyPoly · 15/11/2018 10:31

I work with women's charities, I know what they think. What they say to keep their funding might be quite different.

Funnily enough I imagine many of the other thousands of people who work with women's charities disagree with your assessment. And many of the thousands who actually work for women's charities too. What with there being no hive mind and all.

Perfectly1mperfect · 15/11/2018 10:32

Also at the start of the article it says:

We focus on women who have created change and spearheaded movements for other women, and stood up against discrimination against gender and sexuality.

Whether she inspires you or not, she does fit this description.

Helmetbymidnight · 15/11/2018 10:32

She’s an inspirational woman?
