To think my dd took ecstasy?

Elizab3thh · 12/11/2018 22:13

Basically, my (just) 16 year old dd went to a concert on Saturday night and stayed over at her friends after which was all fine. However, she came back on Sunday with swollen, chafed lips- she said that she got knocked in the face at the concert but something felt wrong about it. Today, I’ve been thinking about my experiences as a teenager and remembered how ecstasy would make your jaw ‘gurn’ and cause you to bite your lips. Now the only logical explanation I can see for dd’s lips is this but don’t know how to broach the subject as I have no proof whatsoever. Am i jumping to conclusions? How do I ask her without seeming as if I am jumping to conclusions?

Quite a leap. That said if you feel something is amiss you might very well be correct that something is... but not necessarily ecstasy just based on puffy lips.

Purpletigers · 12/11/2018 22:35

If there’s any risk she may have taken drugs then you need to have a serious conversation with her.
What would have stopped you taking drugs when you were her age ?
Reduced money , end of sleepovers , start a hobby .... . Threat of kicking her ass and grounding her until she’s 18 .

Ontheboardwalk · 12/11/2018 22:35

My vote is for stubbly boyfriend as well

bluejelly · 12/11/2018 22:39

@Purpletigers or maybe acknowledging that ecstasy is statistically less dangerous than horse-riding, and definitely much less dangerous than too much alcohol. And that it can be great fun, but still needs to be treated with respect, care and moderation.

DishranawaywiththeSpoon · 12/11/2018 22:41

Ecstasy definitely makes you chew the inside of your cheeks and lips! People always mash up their cheeks with ecstasy.

She might have taken ecstasy, it's a fairly popular drug round here, or she might just have been snogging someone. Or she might just have got cold and dribbly, we cant really say over the internet.

If there's no other indication she's taken drugs I wouldn't worry too much, maybe have a conversation with her about drugs in general? Only you know what her lips look like, I wouldn't go accusing her of anything but at 16 I would think it would be a good time to chat about drugs anyway.

TheRenegadeMaster · 12/11/2018 22:42

Possibly. But none of my friends were taking any 'hard stuff' like ecstasy until around 18/19. 16/17 was spent on alcohol because it was still new and exciting!

But, as she's gone to a festival it might be a good time to have the conversation anyway, as no doubt she'll be near others on drugs and it would be best to make sure she is informed and aware of what goes on.

Reduced money , end of sleepovers , start a hobby .... . Threat of kicking her ass and grounding her until she’s 18 .

None of those things work.... Education and an open policy are probably best you can hope for.

Ohyesiam · 12/11/2018 22:45

I did lots of e in. the 90s, and it never affected my lips

ICantThinkOfANewName · 12/11/2018 22:46

Unless you've ever found evidence of her using drugs before then you're jumping to a major conclusion there. Also not everyone who uses E gets swollen lips like that.

My guess is snogging as well.

Cheeeeislifenow · 12/11/2018 22:46

Never had swollen lips on drugs , blistery cheeks on the inside though, yes.
Maybe op might be good time for a chat anyway, I wouldn't accuse though....

TheRenegadeMaster · 12/11/2018 22:48

Festival I meant concert lol - but concerts are rife with drugs so not much difference !!

cakedup · 12/11/2018 22:48

Another regular ecstasy user from the 90s and also snogger. Snogging -for hours-- gave me chapped lips but ecstasy never did.

Serfisafleur · 12/11/2018 22:50

For the record, the exact thing did happen to my lips a couple of times. I chewed them up pretty 'enthusiastically' and woke up looking like I'd had a bad bee sting or something.

Have never had that result from a snogging session no matter how enthusiastic.

Serfisafleur · 12/11/2018 22:51

^ a couple of times on E.

Serfisafleur · 12/11/2018 22:52

So in your shoes I may have thought the came thing.

You can't know unless you ask. If your relationship is close, just ask in. "Have you ever thought about taking E" kind of way.

ShesABelter · 12/11/2018 22:52

Me and my friends took ecstasy a fair bit when we were younger in a large group of about 20 none of us ever had that happen to our lips.

Faez · 12/11/2018 22:57

only ever experienced very chewed cheeks

Nitpickpicnic · 12/11/2018 22:59

I’d give her that Hmm look and say ‘anything you want to tell me about the other night?’ while looking pointedly at her lips.

They crack easily at that age. You haven’t outright accused her, but you’ve opened the door to a chat, and let her know you’ve still got your mum eyes on her!

doucherama · 12/11/2018 23:01

*Did she see The Prodigy or Jane McDonald?
*
I am absolutely howling at this comment! 😂😂😂

Purpletigers · 12/11/2018 23:04

Bluejelly , drugs are great fun !? Seriously what planet have you been living on ? You would need to incredibly uneducated / thick nowadays to take drugs .

Talk to your daughter op ! You need to protect her from this shit society we live in where taking drugs is viewed as an enjoyable pastime .

cakedup · 12/11/2018 23:06

Purpletigers we are conditioned to think drugs are bad and drinking is normal. But how is alcohol any different really?

TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup · 12/11/2018 23:08

I took ecstasy fairly regularly, I chipped a tooth cos I bit my lip piercing but I never ended up with swollen chapped lips.

screamer1 · 12/11/2018 23:08

Definitely snogging

TheWiseWomansFear · 12/11/2018 23:13

MDMA can utterly mash your lips, and make not only your lips but your jaw swell up.

If it's drugs she'll have soreness inside her mouth too from chomping on the insides of her cheeks.

RCohle · 12/11/2018 23:15

I would have thought snogging not drugs.

Have you checked with the friend's parents that she actually stayed there? I'd be much more suspicious she was off with some boy.
