To ask if you follow up and how on job application?

I have applied for a few jobs on monster/ reed/ totaljobs.

I haven't been great following up on the applications as I'm so unsure of what I should do.

For example great job was posted on reed on Thursday (4days ago) Spent hours on the cover letter and I thought it was pretty well put together. Applied on the same day the job listing was live. I got a 'no reply ' confirmation that they received the application. No phone call or direct email from the recruiter yet.

My partner suggested that I should just give them a call. I feel like it's too soon. Also I'd rather email. I have a portfolio of my work which would be great if they could see it so I could potentially email them about that.
No closing date on the job listing. Any advice?

Phone! You can put across enthusiasm much better on the phone and it's good to push yourself outside your comfort zone. Just say you're so keen on the job and wondered if they had any ideas re time frames and short listing. I often find when you're not going thru a recruiter it makes a big difference to gall with a question before submitting an application so that you're memorable
