How much do you earn per anum before tax? What is your current position/job/career? Do you enjoy it?

OP posts:
MrsRhettButler · 13/11/2018 18:41

Mechanic, about £7,000pa @16 hours pw as I'm currently studying.

MadameJosephine · 13/11/2018 18:45

£38k Midwife sonographer. I love my job. It’s stressful and a massive responsibility but it’s a privilege to share the joys of impending parenthood with families. It has its moments where it’s utterly heartbreaking but there’s satisfaction in trying your best to support women and their partners through the dark times too.

81Byerley · 13/11/2018 18:48

State pension ….about £5.500 pa.

LasMeninas · 13/11/2018 18:48

LasMeninas what do you do with your time instead?

Wow. All sorts. Spend time with my family. Spend time with neighbours and friends. Grow food. Cook the food and eat it! Take care of animals. Read. Post on mumsnet.

icanbewhatiwant · 13/11/2018 18:48

I’m liking seeing what others do and earn. I only currently earn 3k a year. I hate my job. I really wish I’d done better at school, got a good job etc etc. I followed my dream of working with horses. I enjoyed it at the time, but such a stupid decision as I don’t do horses anymore. I’d so love to re train as something else. But I’d have to re take school exams again, I’m heading towards 50 and really don’t want to do them.

areyoubeingserviced · 13/11/2018 18:50

There are a lot of people on very high wages.
It’s just that in real life people don’t like to discuss earnings.
We are more likely to discuss our sex lives or our political affiliations rather than our earnings
It’s not just about qualifications,( though attending university increases the likelihood of getting a better paid job) it’s just about being in the right place at the right time and having the opportunity.

LasMeninas · 13/11/2018 18:50

Dear Inland Revenue, In your dreams

Grin

LasMeninas, what do you live on? I always had to work

Savings and investments. I earned a lot in my 20s and lived/live extremely frugally. I live in a country where the cost of living is low and land is fertile.

boomboo · 13/11/2018 18:51

23k Mental Health Charity. Job is great 80% if time, money is rubbish and due to government cuts job security is rubbish. Apparently we don't need to support the mentally ill in the community....who knew!

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 13/11/2018 18:52

@lasmenias not one single job in the whole world is interesting enough for you? Wow.
How do you fund life??

LasMeninas · 13/11/2018 18:54

@lasmenias not one single job in the whole world is interesting enough for you?

There are probably quite a few that are interesting, but that are also feasible? I don't think so. I'd like to be a professional athlete, but I'm not physically talented enough. Or an astrophysicist. But I'm smart enough. Or a painter or a photographer. But I'm not artistic enough.

Supermum29 · 13/11/2018 18:56

23,500k per year, work for an insurance broker.

I enjoy my job most days! But am looking to completely change career and work with the ambulance service..... something a bit more rewarding.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 13/11/2018 18:57

Have you ever had any careers guidance or education? Have you ever worked?
Apologies for all the questions but I research career decision making behaviour and your answer fascinates me.

Redandblue11 · 13/11/2018 18:57

Circa £55k per year for 3 days week work. Engineering sector been qualified for 20 years

LasMeninas · 13/11/2018 18:58

BlaaBlaaBlaa I did make another post above that you may have missed. If you want to know more you'll have to PM me because it's all a bit outing.

herethereandeverywhere · 13/11/2018 18:59

Flowersandbirds

As a fellow lawyer I'm a little disappointed with your flawed logic Wink

Just because someone states they are fortunate but have worked hard to get where they are, it does not follow that they are automatically casting aspersions on those that work hard but earn far less, whether by choice or necessity.

I stand by the fact that sacrificing the best years of my life working round the clock for a decade to establish myself in my career, on top of the previous 4 years study was hard work which got me to where I am now.

Other people have their own stories, that's mine Smile

Espoleta · 13/11/2018 19:02

90k 4 days a week.
I’m in advertising I’ve hated returning since maternity leave. I recently moved jobs to somewhere super close to my home with core hours and more flexibility and before I arrived promoted a man who had never done the role above me. I want to leave and I should morally but the proximity to home and the work life balance it gives me means I can’t

Ideally I want to move out of ad land. I just can’t take it all seriously anymore.

@Darls3000 that’s amazing that you found a super family friendly agency. Are you in London?

monkeymonkeyswinginginthetree · 13/11/2018 19:04

I’m a nanny. I earn 40k per year (plus including 10k overtime) love my job. I get to travel the world and stay in lowery hotels for free. I get to do fun activities with the children. It’s perfect for me!

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 13/11/2018 19:05

I can't pm on the mobile app for some reason. I've seen the post about how you spend your time. I'm guessing you're in a privileged position that you don't need to work?
I was just curious about the idea that out of literally thousands of jobs there aren't any that interest you.. also by the way you phrased your answer, suggesting work would be a waste of time.

It just appealed to my academic interests

monkeymonkeyswinginginthetree · 13/11/2018 19:06

Sorry I meant not including 10k overtime.

Tokenorange · 13/11/2018 19:08

This is making me feel like crap. I earn the square root of fuck all Sad & I don't get any benefits either... I'm hoping to work in the near future though, I'd love a job.

  • I've had a very traumatic life..
Ragwort · 13/11/2018 19:09

I absolutely love my job, I don’t even earn enough to pay tax (work 24 hours a week), I’ve had better paid jobs in the past, company cars etc but I love what I do with a passion & genuinely have a smile on my face every day I go to work, and it’s in retail which is frequently sneered at on Mumsnet but I love it. Grin I often choose to work weekends & Bank Hols just for the pleasure of being at work.

Tokenorange · 13/11/2018 19:09

You lot with real earnings are very lucky

Expectingnumberfour · 13/11/2018 19:11

@hoodiemum I would love to do that. I've been a teacher for 17 years and always made the resources for department etc. They've been stolen by many other schools etc!!

Palaver1 · 13/11/2018 19:12

Why would or should anyone ask such a question ..find it hard people even replied very very nosyConfused

LosMeninos · 13/11/2018 19:12

I was just curious about the idea that out of literally thousands of jobs there aren't any that interest you.. also by the way you phrased your answer, suggesting work would be a waste of time.

Lots of jobs seem vaguely interesting. But I find my hobbies and spare time more interesting than taking another degree and committing to a full time career... Having to commit 40 hours a week to something often makes it considerably less interesting.

On a global level, I am extremely privileged, yes. Although compared to a lot of the people in this thread, I am not, it seems! Our outgoings are extremely low though.
