To wonder if I’m the only person in the UK who washes their own car?

This is lighthearted I’m not knocking anyone who gets their car washed but I’m wondering if anyone washes their own car these days?
I wash my car once a week simply because I’ve always enjoyed doing so, I find it quite relaxing, gives me time to tune out.
However, no one in my road washes their own cars. I’m a dog walker, I am always walking around various villages and I can’t recall the last time I saw anyone doing so.
Should I be contacting The Guinness World Records and entering myself as the last surviving diy car washer. Or are there any fellow washers out there, somewhere, anywhere???

Well, round our way you can get a couple of Eastern European gentlemen to do it quickly, in all weathers, for £6. Thank goodness for the EU GrinGrin

I wash my own car because I can't afford to pay anyone else to do something I can do perfectly well myself!

I don't get time to do it weekly though.

happypoobum · 12/11/2018 11:39

I am in my fifties and have never washed my own car Blush

I have never had scratches or weird marks from having it done professionally.

My friend married some loser who used to clean his car with a toothbrush. They're divorced now. Smile

flowerandflower · 12/11/2018 11:41

I do my own because I find it relaxing

LegoCardSwapper · 12/11/2018 14:15

The bloke opposite me does it every other day. Without fail. Even in snow and rain.

Anyat212 · 12/11/2018 14:54

I also wash my own car mainly because I can’t justify paying somebody to clean my car, which I can easily do myself! I could spend that money on something else..

I’m not a tight arse I think in my head I’d rather treat myself to something else.. I’m 26.

One of my neighbours washes all the family cars a couple of times a week, so you're not alone OP.

Mine gets washed by me when I can be bothered, which is not very often.

I'm not sure how well the paint on my car would stand up to a mechanical car wash and I won't use a car wash staffed by exploited human workers.

Strugglingtodomybest · 12/11/2018 15:13

My neighbour seems to spend his entire life washing his car, it's the joke of the street.

I don't really understand the point of washing cars myself.

Dychmygol · 12/11/2018 15:15

I'm short and drive a Ford C-Max. I don't have access to outside water supply and even getting electricity to reach the car is hassle.

All round paying £10 for someone to clean my car inside and out to a decent enough standard when I shop in Asda is a bargain in comparison to the hassle that is finding a step ladder, sorting out easy water access, sorting out electricity, tackling all the mud that the kids trek into the car after football training and the sheer amount of time that all takes!

DH however loves cleaning his car. He drives it to MILs house and does everything inside and out. He has offered to do mine, but only if I drive the car to MILs...it's easier to drive it to the car wash people!

Sirzy · 12/11/2018 15:16

My partner does mine. He hates the stuff they use at the hand car washes so when it’s gettinb dirty if he doesn’t offer I mention taking it to one and all of a sudden it’s cleaned and polished Grin

KikiG18 · 12/11/2018 15:21

Once a week? Sod that! There's a small business behind our local garage that charges £3, £5, £10, £15, or £50 depending on how deep of a clean you want. We pay £5 every few months for them to do the outside only. It takes them 10 minutes and they do a fab job. We used to spend an hour or so pressure washing our cars and hoovering them out every month but honestly we just don't have the time anymore. Blush

OlderThanAverageforMN · 12/11/2018 15:22

DH does his every week, he wouldn't trust anyone else to do it. They are washed, leathered, waxed, wheel cleaned, tyre blacked and hoovered. He does love his cars Grin

HariboLecter · 12/11/2018 15:25

I do my own, I enjoy it Smile I've never taken it to a hand car wash place, and haven't used an old style automatic one for about 15 years.

hendricksy · 12/11/2018 15:30

My dh does , he wouldn't let those super market people and their dirty sponges near our cars 😬😬..... as an aside does anyone find them annoying when they pounce on you !! I avoid my local Sainsbury's in favour of Tesco because of them!

wink1970 · 12/11/2018 16:01

I wash one of mine myself as I bought it from new and it's black, and I don't want the paint scratched.

I have another that I take to the hand wash, as it was a couple of years old when I bought it and had some scratches etc already, so I'm not as precious. it's also too big to do myself as I'm a short arse

Kewqueue · 12/11/2018 16:03

When we visit my parents I get the kids to wash our car - it's a big treat as we can't wash it ourselves at home!

ShatnersBassoon · 12/11/2018 16:06

You're singlehandedly keeping the neighbourly 'Do mine next!' joke running. Good work, op.

Childrenofthesun · 12/11/2018 16:08

DH does mine for me!

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 12/11/2018 16:08

If I had outside running water I would but I live in a flat and constantly refilling buckets of water and bring them out is awful!

Mamadothehump · 12/11/2018 16:12

I tried once and wondered why the hell I started. I drive a BMW X5!!!

motortroll · 12/11/2018 16:15

I used to but now I have a massive car and I have to climb a ladder and it takes hours and looks shit! I just don't clean it and wait til dh is fed up and takes it somewhere and pays someone

wrenika · 12/11/2018 16:15

I wash mine myself...but only when it gets dirty enough to be embarrassing! (So probably only a few times a year...)

I don't take it through automatic car washes because I don't know how...and I'm very anxious over anything knew. And I don't take it to hand car washes because I can do that myself...why pay someone else to do it!

bimbobaggins · 12/11/2018 16:17

I wash my own on the run up to pay day but splash out on a professional wash when I get paid. Really living the high life

PumpkinKitty82 · 12/11/2018 16:39

I wash my own car and so does dh .
I hate drying it though so he does that bit for me 😁

Sparklingbrook · 12/11/2018 16:45

We pay someone else to do it. They can do it better and more quickly than we can. I have other stuff to do on my days off.
