To wonder if I’m the only person in the UK who washes their own car?

This is lighthearted I’m not knocking anyone who gets their car washed but I’m wondering if anyone washes their own car these days?
I wash my car once a week simply because I’ve always enjoyed doing so, I find it quite relaxing, gives me time to tune out.
However, no one in my road washes their own cars. I’m a dog walker, I am always walking around various villages and I can’t recall the last time I saw anyone doing so.
Should I be contacting The Guinness World Records and entering myself as the last surviving diy car washer. Or are there any fellow washers out there, somewhere, anywhere???

My FIL does, although I don’t think he does it weekly.

He also washes his caravan when he’s on holiday, and then again when they get home...

Desecratedcoconut · 12/11/2018 10:09

Yes there was a survey done and it's just you. We all got together and made a pact to see how long it would take you to realise.

NRPDad · 12/11/2018 10:09

When a roadside/supermarket car-park based group of minimum wage workers will do it very quickly, to a good standard for £6 then I can see why the vast majority would not was their car themselves.

Desecratedcoconut · 12/11/2018 10:10

And unicorns fil.

missmouse101 · 12/11/2018 10:11

I used to enjoy it and I waxed it too, but now I live somewhere where the hose can't reach the driveway! I used to wash the family car for £1.50 when I was a kid!

Theweasleytwins · 12/11/2018 10:12

Dh washes his car weekly- would do it more if he had the time. Takes half a bloody day. He used to be a car valeter and washes waxes and does a load of other stuff😑

Sparklesocks · 12/11/2018 10:13

My parking space isn’t very near my house or a water source so I can’t hose it down or carry enough water to get to it, so I choose to use the hand car wash round the corner which is very reasonable - and right by my local supermarket which is nice for 2 birds with 1 stone!

SoyDora · 12/11/2018 10:15

Yes, definitely just you out of a UK population of 66 million people!
I don’t, it’s boring and wet and I’ve got better things to do with my time. Loads of people on my street do though, mainly men in their 60’s by the looks of things!

Hillarious · 12/11/2018 10:16

Yes. Just you. I get my children to do mine.

anxiouswaiting · 12/11/2018 10:18

My DH does mine for me about once a month. It's a little saving but we are on a budget. Plus I think he enjoys doing it.

blueskiesandforests · 12/11/2018 10:18

Desecrated :o

Afternoon I realise this is light-hearted, but why has the phrase "an I the only person who" become so popular? It's just a turn if phrase used as a way of asking for affirmation, but it's really irritating and begs to be answered with

Yes, you are.

As an annoying phrase it's a good companion to "going against the grain here" - best used when saying something utterly mundane and uncontroversial which a lot of people have already said Wink

We're not allowed to wash cars in our driveways or on the street where I live - local bylaws forbid it because our water supply comes from groundwater.

QuestionableMouse · 12/11/2018 10:18

I do mine sometimes. Sometimes I take it to the car wash. Usually it stays dirty 😂

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 12/11/2018 10:18

When I had a car the rain washed it for me. It's free and I don't have to do anything! Grin

thecatsthecats · 12/11/2018 10:20

I wait until it rains Blush Must admit the poor sod is a bit neglected since I moved to a house with a drive. I used to do these things when i parked on street or in the block carpark, carrying my bucket of soapy water down.

But now I'm a 20m walk from work, and I hardly ever drive, so the poor bugger sits there.

Djnoun · 12/11/2018 10:22

No, I get the nice people to do it for me. No way I'm mucking about with a hose and a hoover.

SoyDora · 12/11/2018 10:23

This!! It’s used so much on here, and it is so irritating. Do people really think they’re the only person in the world to not like chocolate, or not do elf on the shelf, or not watch the X Factor?

Sorry OP, realise it is lighthearted but it’s given me an opportunity to rant about something that’s been annoying me for a long time Grin

PattiStanger · 12/11/2018 10:23

You obviously don't live near me as I see many many people every weekend washing their cars, maybe I live in a deprived area.

MereDintofPandiculation · 12/11/2018 10:51

I wash my own car. I haven't done it this year yet, and I didn't get round to it last year. I think I did it in 2016.

user1471468296 · 12/11/2018 10:58

I live in a nice area where people have very nice cars and I'm always amazed at how often they all seem to wash them. I suspect they despair of my battered and dirty car sitting on the drive. I always think it must take up a big part of their weekend but I think they must enjoy it. When I lived on the less nice side of town there were lots of those cheapy hand wash places, but there people were always washing their own cars too. I'm really surprised you don't see the same when walking your dog, maybe the time of day? I personally hate doing it, not least because as soon as you clean it it gets filthy again!

MrsStrowman · 12/11/2018 11:03

DF does, we don't. Sometimes if I'm at my parents' and DF is washing his I'll be cheeky and point out mine is dirty and he'll do mine too! Weekly seems like a lot though

Santaclarita · 12/11/2018 11:10

I have to go up muddy tracks daily and have horse stuff in my car. It's never clean. Grin

greendale17 · 12/11/2018 11:11

^If you believe they are paid minimum wage you are a fool.

Also if you like lots of surface scratches on your car carry on using them

Perfectly1mperfect · 12/11/2018 11:22

I've never washed my car myself. Blush

I remember my OH doing it for me, probably 15 years ago, but now we use a hand car wash, when FIL comments on how dirty our cars are.

Biker47 · 12/11/2018 11:28

I was my own because it cost me a lot of money, and I don't want swirl marks from a paid car wash.

LakieLady · 12/11/2018 11:33

I use the jet wash at a petrol station and clean it at least once a year.

Now I have a cordless hoover, I have hoovered out the inside as well.
