To wonder what happened to felt tip pens

Not a serious life problem! But....I wondered when “Sharpies” became the accepted generic term for felt tip pens. Like “hoover” is a general term for vacuum cleaners. When and how did the Sharpie takeover occur?

Shapies aren't the same as felt tips. They are a permanent markerarent they?

A Sharpie is different to a felt tip? At least in my house! I guess I used to call them permanent markers, but Sharpie is less of a mouthful.

I dont think it is? We have sharpies which I would use in the context it is often on here e.g colouring t-shirts. Then we have felt tips for colouring,
Different pens - different jobs.

When did they get so expensive???

ChocolateTearDrops · 12/11/2018 07:39

Felt tip pens are for colouring, (don't tell my art teacher from school, she loathed them as you couldn't shade with them! A good doss if you could get her started on a rant about this during a lesson! Grin) but Sharpies are a permanent marker.

I only see Sharpies mentioned on MN, in a context where their permanent qualities are relevant.
