WishfulSprouts · 11/11/2018 19:05

Started new part time job in sept, had to leave early a week ago as ds had virus and needed picking up- time taken from Toil.
I’m full of a cold it’s got worse as days gone on- runny nose, sore throat, sore ears feel like crap. Would it be ok to call in sick tomo more or should I go and get sent home?

Two absences in a week looks bad. I'd go in and be sent home.

EdithBouvier · 11/11/2018 19:07

I would go. I always find with a cold I feel better at work sometimes as it's distracting. Depends what kind of work you do I guess. Also it would be better to go in and then ask to go home let them see how rough you look maybe.

Aprilsinparis · 11/11/2018 19:09

Phone in sick. They won't thank you if they all have to take time off, because you've infected everbody.

JEMSY30 · 11/11/2018 19:11

Go and get sent home. Shows you've made the effort

Teacherlikemisstrunchball · 11/11/2018 19:12

I’d go in. I always feel worse in the mornings or evenings with a cold. Dose yourself up with paracetamol and drink loads of water. Better (IMHO) to be sent home when they see how Poorly you look, rather than phoning in sick, especially whilst you’re new.

BirdieInTheHand · 11/11/2018 19:13

Depends a bit on what you do?

If you're in an office then you really should go in.

Also why would you be sent home? I wouldn't expect someone to notice that I had a cold unless I was making a massive fuss.

Slimtimeagain · 11/11/2018 19:16

I'd go. I know it's a bit rubbish especially if you feel rough but I'd dose up on paracetomol and ibuprofen throughout the day and try to plough through. Get sent home if you really can't cope.

The people who say don't infect the office must never have to step foot in a supermarket or catch a bus or go to a pub or restaurant or anywhere public between October and March! A cold is a cold, if it isn't flu then it's totally fine to do normal things! I'd be sacked if I had a day off every time I had a common cold!

ShinyMe · 11/11/2018 19:18

If you work in an isolated, very quiet office, can't you go in and take it fairly gently and make it through the day?

StitchingMoss · 11/11/2018 19:21

I’ve got a stinking cold. I’m teaching tomorrow. Would give my right arm to be sitting in an office Confused

PrincessConsuelaBannanaHammock · 11/11/2018 19:24

I would go in. I agree with pp that even for valid reasons two absences in a week doesn't look good. In my office you would have to have a meeting with your manager for that, new to the role or not. Plenty of water, hot lemon and paracetamol and try to get through the day if you can. Hope you feel better soon

MrsStrowman · 11/11/2018 19:25

Go in, if you're that ill they'll send you home. YABU for using tomo as an abbreviation of tomorrow.

Smsmeeesmeghhhehead · 11/11/2018 19:26

Fgs im a teacher and I wouldn't go in if I felt rough. Years ago yes but any goodwill has walked right out the door these days.
Ib don't think anyone thanks you for soldiering on if you're until

Owllwo · 11/11/2018 19:26

It’s just a cold Confused

huggybear · 11/11/2018 19:27

I'd go in. Why would you be sent home for a cold?

WWWWicked · 11/11/2018 19:27

In a new job, a quiet office with an isolated role, I’d dose up and go in, unless I was so I’ll I literally could not leave the house.

Jeffacake · 11/11/2018 19:28

See how you feel in the morning. I wouldn’t take a day off for a cold unless I was physically unable to stand for long enough to teach.

ggirl · 11/11/2018 19:29

Go in , a cold isn't serious enough to warrant a day off sick in my opinion . Even as a nurse I go in but make sure I am careful with vulnerable people .
Take some cold remedy tablets to stop the running nose and feeling rough.

Caprisunorange · 11/11/2018 19:30

Go in. They won’t “send you home” - you’re a grown woman.

naicepineapple · 11/11/2018 19:31

In an isolated role (minimal risk of spreading your cold), id dose up on paracetamol, wash hands well and regularly and take tissues.

bastardkitty · 11/11/2018 19:31

You should go in. I don't know why you'd expect to be sent home with a cold.

nameforthethread · 11/11/2018 19:32

Dose up on cold and flue tablets in the morning, Vics on your chest.

I always feel slightly better at work, then crap again when I get home. I also have a physical job outside. The thought of leaving my warm dry home when feeling shit is awful, but as I said I usually feel bit better once I get there.

if you are really bad at least you made the effort.

LEMtheoriginal · 11/11/2018 19:32

Can you ask to work from home? Bloody martyrs spreading germs. If you "just" have the cold i do then you shouldn't be going in tomorrow. Luckily i swapped my day off this week otherwise id be having the day off as itsquite a physical job. Office job? I could probably drag myself in especially if i didn't have to do talking. But then you'll spread it ..spread through my place like wildfire. I feel like utter shit

bigchris · 11/11/2018 19:32

In my work place you go in with a cold

We're only allowed 3 self certifying sickness and then we have to get a doctor's note each time, if I was off sick each time I had a cold I'd be in trouble Grin

Glumglowworm · 11/11/2018 19:33

I think you should go in unless your job involves working with people who would be made very ill by a cold (imuno suppressed people, frail elderly etc)

Two absences in as many weeks looks really bad, even more so when you’ve only just started. Once you’ve had time to establish that you’re a reliable staff member who doesn’t take the piss your employers will be more understanding that sometimes things happen with unfortunate timing.
