To take tomo off work- new job

WishfulSprouts · 11/11/2018 19:05

Started new part time job in sept, had to leave early a week ago as ds had virus and needed picking up- time taken from Toil.
I’m full of a cold it’s got worse as days gone on- runny nose, sore throat, sore ears feel like crap. Would it be ok to call in sick tomo more or should I go and get sent home?

User02** because most us only have around 3 sickness occasions and if we all stayed off with a cold, we'd be off far more than 3 times if you include infections and stomach bugs as well. The working world simply doesn't accommodate sickness like that. We go in because we have to

Do people actually stay off work for a cold? I think you should take paracetamol and suck it up.

@EmotionallyDestroyed I guess that it’s not actually flu generally speaking as there’s no way you could manage a day in a retail job with flu. Maybe a heavy cold. I wouldn’t worry lol

brizzledrizzle · 12/11/2018 08:30

It's only a cold. Take a lemsip if you can and get some sore throat pastilles and get on with it.

Perhaps because you said they sounded like an Australian? I think that can be argued with quite sufficiently! I think the only stupid thing I can read here though is your expectation that everyone with a cold should stay home. Apparently you already live in a bubble if you think that is reasonable.

Plenty of fluids, balsam tissues (they really do make a difference and help prevent your nose from becoming sore). Day and Night Nurse is the best stuff - don't bother with paracetamol! If you can eat then soup and toast will also help.

Quite often going into work can be a good thing. You feel like death for the first hour but improve as the day goes on as it's a distraction.

Plus going in when you have a cold provides some reassurance to your new team that if you do go off sick, it's because you are genuinely too ill to come into work.

I wouldn't expect people to take time off for a general cold. You can't avoid coming into contact with people with colds, so it's not necessary to avoid work unless you work with vulnerable people and have special policies in place for minor illness.

I would also expect someone in their first week of a job to be going out if their way to demonstrate their commitment to the job.

If I were your boss OP I would be seriously unimpressed and beginning to question your commitment.

Thanks all went in.
It’s not my first month been there since 1st week sept.
Anyway absolutely streaming nose, eyes etc.
Actually a few people in the team said go home you look dreadful and in any other circumstances I would have but systems were down so needed to fix things before I could go anywhere and by that point it was the end of the day anyway.

at least you made it through, hopefully you'll feel better tomorrow Smile

Why should I be ashamed, EmotionallyDestroyed? I don't go in with flu, I have flu jabs! But others do, that's how it tends to be in retail... emotional blackmail is a real thing in retail..
