To take tomo off work- new job

WishfulSprouts · 11/11/2018 19:05

Started new part time job in sept, had to leave early a week ago as ds had virus and needed picking up- time taken from Toil.
I’m full of a cold it’s got worse as days gone on- runny nose, sore throat, sore ears feel like crap. Would it be ok to call in sick tomo more or should I go and get sent home?

User02 no one had mentioned D and V i don't think? I'd hope they didn't come on with D and V! Totally different to a cold!

Junglerum · 12/11/2018 06:36

Do people get ‘sent home’? I’m a line manager and would expect my team to be adult enough to make the call on being too ill to come in, not for me to have to decide for them. Now wondering if I’m a terrible boss Blush

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 12/11/2018 06:38

I’d go in with a cold. Especially in a new job with a track record not looking so great.

PersonaNonGarter · 12/11/2018 06:39

Agreed. No one goes to work with flu. That’s a cold.

LightastheBreeze · 12/11/2018 06:50

People may get sent home if an illness comes on suddenly like D&V, or migraine, not a cold as that is generally just unpleasant rather than incapacitating.

Rudi44 · 12/11/2018 07:03

You have to go in, firstly, it’s just a cold, unless you have a temperature or D and V you aren’t dying, work through it. Secondly, one absence in the first month, let alone week looks bad enough, 2 in a week would be sending massive alarm bells ringing to me if I was your manager.

PattiStanger · 12/11/2018 07:03

People who go to work with colds aren't martyrs, that's a silly thing to say, they are behaving in a normal way surely. The country would grind to a halt if no one went to work when they had a cold.

I notice the MN bingo card solution of work from home, don't posters realise that if you add up all the NHS employees, teachers, tradespeople, retail workers etc you're left with very few employees for whom this is actually anywhere like an option.

gamerwidow · 12/11/2018 07:21

Depends how bad the cold is. If it’s just normal sniffles that are sorted with paracetamol then go but if you’ve got a fever and are feeling really unable to cope then stay home. Most colds are fine but you do get some that need a day of rest to sort you out.

gamerwidow · 12/11/2018 07:25

user2 I get infections more than most because I have RA but it is impossible to stay home everytime you have a cold. Serious infectious illness like D&V or Chickenpox etc. need isolation but colds are so common place you can’t avoid them.

malificent7 · 12/11/2018 07:33

A cold can be nasty.

malificent7 · 12/11/2018 07:35

One a sense in the first month due to a child being ill should not look bad...it's not your fault if your child is ill.

Justgivemesomepeace · 12/11/2018 07:36

Most people go to work with a cold. What's with this 'sent' home stuff? Its not a call I'll make as a manager although I've had plenty of people hanging around my desk telling me how ill they are over the years. They all get the same response. 'Are you too ill to be in work?' 'Are you staying or going?' It's their decision and it goes down as sick if they leave. If it's just a cold YBU. If you want your manager to decide whether you are fit for work YBU. If you are too ill stay off. If you can work go in. Only you know how ill you feel.

BorisAndDoris · 12/11/2018 07:45

Whilst it's not pleasant, you can't stay home for a cold. And as for anyone saying how people go to work with the flu? No. No they don't. They go to work with a terrible cold feeling sorry for themselves and calling it flu. It's a man flu at best.

LEMtheoriginal · 12/11/2018 07:56

If it wasn't my day off today i would drag myself into work. However, Saturday or Sunday i honestly doubt i would have managed.

Lovemusic33 · 12/11/2018 08:00

Love the whole flu/cold argument. Flu doesn’t necessarily mean your bed ridden but I probably wouldn’t go to work with it.

I’m lucky with my job that I can usually swap shifts with someone if I’m unwell. I usually do go in apart from the time I had a really bad UTI or if one of the kids are ill. I would go in with a cold.

Thirtyrock39 · 12/11/2018 08:05

I've had a cold for two weeks - I'm very conscious of it as have a new premmie baby in the family and can't go and visit till cold totally gone so aware of infection risk but would never ring in to work with a cold. For the majority of people it is a minor illness probably caught at work anyway so germs already there.
Our school just sent a letter out about absence and was very clear that they expect children to still attend with a cold so I definitely would as an adult

gamerwidow · 12/11/2018 08:05

As a manager I agree that I don’t send people home for illness. You’re an adult it’s up to you to decide if you’re well enough to be at work. That being said if you tell me during the day you feel ill and are going home I would be fine with it.

Kit10 · 12/11/2018 08:08

To me a cold isn't a reason to call in sick. Yes you'll spread germs, but it's a cold...not the plague.

And to those who mentioned suppressed immune systems, I know it sucks but you simply can't have everyone home when there's a cold going around, the country would grind to a halt, it's unrealistic to expect every worker in the country to call in sick for a cold, we should be teaching good hygiene not turning people away. Perhaps an office will treat it differently if there is someone with a suppressed system in their team, but beyond that I don't think you can put unrealistic expectations on people.

Writing "tomo" is lazy and does sound stupid. Who can argue with that?

Bluewidow · 12/11/2018 08:22

It's a cold, my children go school with colds if they didn't none of us would ever be at work or school in the winter months. Suck it up and get on with it I'm afraid.

Birdie6 · 12/11/2018 08:25

Get some cold and flu tablets, take them regularly, go to work.
