The price of concert tickets - Jesus wept!

I've not been to a concert/gig for decades. No childcare, live in the middle of nowhere, lack of money blah blah ...

Anyway, DH and I decided to splash out and go to see Fleetwood Mac at Wembly Stadium. I've just looked at tickets - the cheapest (crap) ones are £250 and they go up to over £1000 Shock

And it's not even the full Fleetwood Mac - they've sacked Lindsay Buckingham!

Would you pay this much to see anyone? What do you normally pay for gigs?

Yes unfortunately I agree with crispbutty saw Bon Jovi at Wembley around 1999/2000 can’t remember exactly but it was borderline dull. Robbie Williams who I didn’t even like, about the same time period at the NEC was bloody brilliant.

Didiusfalco · 11/11/2018 18:36

Tattius that did make me laugh 😂.

WrenNatsworthy · 11/11/2018 18:55

Recently have paid £27.50 for Fun Loving Criminals, £50 for Massive Attack and £62.50 for Chemical Brothers at All Points East with other acts.

Most I've paid for a gig is £160 for Madonna on the Confessions tour. Before DC! Don't like stadiums generally, unless it's Depeche Mode who are my absolute favourite. I'd never buy a ticket at a price above it's face value though, I think scalpers are lowlife.

I am fortunate enough to work as a steward at Glastonbury so get to see lots of bands that I adore there when I'm not on shift.

GrandTheftWalrus · 11/11/2018 22:36

I get paid 45 quid to work at a concert venue here. Some people have paid twice that for tickets. It's also a fiver per pint and about 4 for a wine. So they are spending hundreds of pounds for 1 night and I get 45 quid to keep them safe.

zeezee3 · 12/11/2018 00:25

@Lakielady

I saw Bob Marley play at Crystal Palace Park in (I think)1980. The tickets were about £12, and there were loads of other bands on, including the wonderful Joe Jackson.

I wonder how much that would be, adjusted for inflation?

About £60.

I saw Blondie at the Glasgow Apollo in 1979. I paid £4.25! (Prob about £20 now, so quite a bargain.)

Sallystyle · 12/11/2018 00:36

I paid £190 for U2 tickets recently (well I have seen them many times and paid a similar price) and they were pretty good seats.

I don't mind paying it because it makes me happy and all the memories I have with going with my mum will last a life time. I know the prices are stupid but for me it is worth it.

I last saw them at the 02 and the atmosphere was as amazing as always.

Gotthetshirt23 · 12/11/2018 00:46

Looked at Mac tickets and decided it was far too much money for an incomplete band.
I did look at tickets for the Eagles as a Christmas present for OH .... Around £300 EACH!
Will check on Scarlet Mist (if it's still going) nearer the dates.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 12/11/2018 01:12

I’m in Alberta, Canada. Fleetwood Mac cancelled Saturday’s show in Edmonton at the bloody sound check! Monday’s show in Calgary has been cancelled too. They’re citing band member illness, but won’t say who.

I know people who had driven for 4.5 hours to see them on Saturday and others who were driving to Calgary (7.5 hours)and making a weekend of it. They’re pretty gutted.

fantasmasgoria1 · 12/11/2018 07:14

I would expect to pay £50 - £80. A band I have seen a few times (my favourite) last time tickets were £85. This is a huge band who sell out massive venues sold 150 million albums worldwide. They like to keep prices as low as they can!

Pawprintjoy · 12/11/2018 07:20

Most of dd’s concerts are under £30, just payed £14 for her to see one of her favourite bands on Sunday. Would never buy over face value unless it’s someone one of us were desperate to see with no other upcoming shows

anniehm · 12/11/2018 08:08

Anything from £60 for a stadium/arena gig, depends upon who and where. Paid £55 for the Killers, paid similar for Lady GaGa last year, not London though. Bigger problem is getting them without using a tout as they sell out

Waspnest · 12/11/2018 09:53

Depends on the band/show really. I've just paid about £65 for a Take That ticket but you can absolutely see where your money goes . Went to see The Feeling a while ago - they were fantastic but as it was basically in a club tickets were only about £20. Both are great in their own way. I think the gigs that are rip offs are where you're paying huge prices to just see a band stood on stage playing music. A friend went to see Ed Sheeran at a stadium recently, she said it was pretty expensive but not a great experience. Because it's one person on stage the sound was really distorted and a bit crap and she wouldn't go again.

VenusClapTrap · 12/11/2018 13:07

I just paid £180 for a ticket to see a-ha next year. But it’s row 3, so I’ll pretty much be able to stare up Morten Harket’s nostrils. Plus, all that Norwegian clean living means that his voice is just as good as it was in 1985 and they are all still very easy on the eye, so I’m more than happy to fork out.

Beingginger · 12/11/2018 16:59

Apparently Ed Sheeran has played to 4.5 million people on his current tour. Say each ticket cost £50 he’s made £225m before costs Shock

Severide08 · 12/11/2018 17:14

Tell me about it .Me and my best friend tried to get tickets to see Pink next year .Could not get past queue on website so never got any Sad.Ones i have seen since are going for ridiculous money.

CookieSue222 · 12/11/2018 17:20

Off to see the fabulous Mumford & Sons at the end of the month (£110 for 2 tickets) - hope I can get close enough to squeeze Mr Mumfords chubby cheeks! Also got Madness mid-dec again approx £50 each. Don't think I've ever paid more than £100 (R.E.M) per ticket to see anyone.

sonlypuppyfat · 12/11/2018 17:28

I saw U2 in 1986ish cost £6

mostdays · 12/11/2018 17:31

I know... DH and I were so excited that Metallica are playing at the Etihad around my birthday next year, but the tickets are a stupid price. I don't want to spend hundreds of pounds on a bloody gig.

TheLastQueenOfPop · 12/11/2018 18:05

For massively popular sold out gigs it can be worth checking with the arena/venue closer to the time - often production tickets can be released for stadium gigs - I saw Take That on the Progress tour 2 or 3 nights in a row for £10 a pop due to limited view production tickets

OliviaStabler · 12/11/2018 18:45

It also depends on what you are happy with. I won't attend a concert unless I am close to the stage. I spent too many concerts watching a stick inset on stage and having to watch the big screens to see any detail. Just wasn't worth it imo.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 12/11/2018 18:51

U2 were from £60 to hundreds this tour and I’d say worth every penny . An experience . DH is the mega fan but I loved it . More intimate venues than stadium , although they are equally brilliant at Croke Park.
Spice Girls at the Stadium of Light are £££.
I’ve been to more theatre things this year like League of Gentlemen but again , worth the cash.

Effendi · 12/11/2018 19:01

Ye gods. I paid 13 quid to see Queen in 1986! Status Quo supporting too.

The price of tickets is ridiculous these days.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 12/11/2018 19:09

It’s mad - £11 for Oasis in ‘94 !

MadisonAvenue · 12/11/2018 21:41

I've got a ticket stub for Bowie in 1986 - £16
We saw Madonna at Wembley Stadium in 1990 on the Blond Ambition Tour and paid £21. I paid £170 to see her at Wembley Arena on the Confessions Tour but I was second row with the VIPs on the row in front of me, and it was bloody brilliant.

QueenofStella · 12/11/2018 23:08

OP I hear you, £102 each for Fleetwood Mac in the bloody top tier at Wembley! However I am going by hook or by crook - it’s on my bucket list to see them live.

Not only the ticket price - the amount of fannying on to get through the ‘queue’ on the website as well... Angry

Go through YouTube and watch the concert in Boston in 97 - actual goosebumps I tell you! Stevie Nicks’s voice OMG! Shock
