The price of concert tickets - Jesus wept!

I've not been to a concert/gig for decades. No childcare, live in the middle of nowhere, lack of money blah blah ...

Anyway, DH and I decided to splash out and go to see Fleetwood Mac at Wembly Stadium. I've just looked at tickets - the cheapest (crap) ones are £250 and they go up to over £1000 Shock

And it's not even the full Fleetwood Mac - they've sacked Lindsay Buckingham!

Would you pay this much to see anyone? What do you normally pay for gigs?

I went to Barcelona to see my favourite band. £55 here in a shit venue ( which sold out so ticket prices were twice as much). Versus €19 ticket in a banging Spanish club. I was at the front. I held his leg when he jumped of the stage....Even with Airbnb and cheap flights it was so much better value.

brizzledrizzle · 10/11/2018 19:23

The first concert I went to cost £4 misses point of thread

Now they are crazy prices.

isseywithcats · 10/11/2018 19:27

we are also lucky that being bikers we go to weekend ralolies and general cost for a thursday to sunday with free camping is around £30 each and the bigger rallies put on about 10-15 bands all right not headliners but still good bands worth rocking to

isseywithcats · 10/11/2018 19:27

thats rallies

Seniorcitizen1 · 10/11/2018 19:37

When I went regularly to concerts in 1970s and 1980s the price of a ticket was similar to the price of an album. I saw all my favourites - Led Zep, Floyd, StonesElton John, etc etc. I wouldn’t pay todays prices - they are only one 5 minutes whereas when I saw Led Zep they came on at 7.45pm and went off at 12.15am without a break

Petalflowers · 10/11/2018 19:46

That’s extortionate.

‘M paying £140 for a favourite artist in Royal Albert Hall next year and I thought that was a lot.

Festivals are a better buy.

shortsaint · 10/11/2018 19:52

There's loads and loads of gigs for £30 or less. Go to venue directly and don't buy via agencies like Ticketmaster and certainly NOT viagogo.

And don't go for the bleedin' bloody obvious MOR hasbeens FFS. They're mainly just cashing in....

shortsaint · 10/11/2018 19:54

@Snuffalo Well said.

Beingginger · 10/11/2018 20:05

We saw little mix this summer, tickets cost £45 each and they were only on stage for 1hr 15 minutes Shock they came on at 8:30 and the gig was over by 9:45.
We saw the foo fighters 3 years ago and they had to practically kick them off the stage at 11pm.
Both gigs were in stadiums.

VassalageorChaos · 10/11/2018 20:13

Ahh right, slight amendment. The tickets direct from the venue are

Cat 1 £200; Cat 2 £155; Cat 3 £125; Cat 4 £90; Cat 5 £75

Wembley is completed sold out so, my initial search took me to StubHub - that's where the £250-£1000+ tickets are. It says it's a sight for "resellers" - didn't they used to be called "scalpers"?

I told you it had been a long time since I'd seen a band live!

I had a look last week at tickets for Metallica at Twickenham next year, it's their 'farewell' tour. £80-280 each.
I saw them in 1992 on a stadium tour, £22 it was. To be fair, I only earned £2.18 an hour then...

VassalageorChaos · 10/11/2018 20:19

@Snuffaloo - don't be such a sneery little fucker. FM were the first band I got into, think I was in the first year of high school when Rumours came out. I've really enjoyed listening to their music and Stevie Nicks' solo stuff over the years. Doesn't mean I don't like some new music.

@Youcouldbemysilversprings - blue green colours flashing (sorry couldn't resist it!)

@eggsandwich - I agree LB is irreplaceable. I really like Neil Finn and think he sounds good with FM. Christine's voice is shot though.

If you want to see music a festival is best as you pay £200 for a whole weekend of gigs.

puzzledlady · 10/11/2018 20:30

I paid about £200 each to see U2 Grin

BouleBaker · 10/11/2018 20:32

The ticket prices shot up once they started being touted on the internet. Bands could see directly what people were willing to pay to see them. Now that we have official touts (Viagogo etc) it’s getting worse

onelostsoulswimminginafishbowl · 10/11/2018 20:39

I've just paid £120 for 2 Arctic Monkeys tickets but we need to travel so it was an extra £250 for flights and I still haven't managed to find a hotel. Bloody expensive night out but hopefully worth it!

Lineofbeauty · 10/11/2018 20:40

I wouldn't pay for a stadium gig... what's the point? Dots on a stage, huge screens.... rubbish. Not what live music does best. My fave ever band only play stadium gigs but that's fine- I just listen to their albums.

Don't blame bands for this if they can make money. It's just SO not for me.

I went to see a fantastic act last week and I think it cost about £20 each. International performer, lovely venue, top class music. And that was in Central London.

NewPapaGuinea · 10/11/2018 20:50

What until a few days before/on the day and check twickets and ebay. You’ll be able to get to tickets for a more reasonable price.

Are the £250 Fleetwood Mac tix face value? If so, that is ridiculous!

AlecTrevelyan006 · 10/11/2018 21:06

bottom line is that it's supply and demand

but also worth bearing in mind that most big shows are far more technical than they used to be so there are more costs involved. Also, back in the day, artists would make more money from record sales than from gigs but now it's the other way around.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 10/11/2018 21:10

I've seen three awful gigs in my time and Fleetwood Mac were the most disappointing of all Sad I'm a huge fan too.

So, although I'd pay £100 a ticket for a performance I really wanted to see, I wouldn't pay to see FM live again.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 10/11/2018 21:26

I've got Bon Jovi tickets for next year. There's not many bands I would pay that much to see, but I desperately want to go and take my DC too, as I've converted them into fans! I remember when concert tickets used to be about £17... Anyway, I rarely spend money on myself, so am happy to splash out occasionally.

Mouikey · 10/11/2018 21:31

Massive Foo fan here so happy to pay to see them!

A few years ago we spent a significant amount seeing them at Wembley (with thousands of people!), in the very same week we paid £20 (I think) to see them at the underworld in Camden (about 3 or 400 people) - can you guess what the better gig was?

Therealjudgejudy · 10/11/2018 21:33

I paid €70 to see Lana del Rey next year

skyesayshi · 10/11/2018 21:34

I only buy tickets if I can get them on the sale day, I never buy from a reseller. More should be done to stop resale so that genuine fans get the tickets not touts.

The most I ever paid was for Take That’s Progress Tour or George Michael, can’t remember which but both were worth it.

Recently bought Olly Murs for next year , around £64, but couldn’t get Little Mix. My DD is a huge fan.
