Apostrophe or not?

Sorry but posting for traffic!
Should this sign have an apostrophe?
Hate misuse of the apostrophe and want to buy one for our place but can't decide if it needs one or not. Confused

Apostrophe or not?

JustHavinABreak · 10/11/2018 15:17

Nope. The Smiths' house yes or Mrs Smith's post, but the sign should say The Smiths.

MissingDietCoke · 10/11/2018 15:18

No. If it was followed by 'house' or 'home' then yes but in this context no. The apostrophe denoted possession.

MissingDietCoke · 10/11/2018 15:18

*denotes

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 10/11/2018 15:18

If there is only one of them and is their house it is refering to then yes if there is more thsn one smith it should go after the s if it referee to it being their house or not at all if it means the smiths live there and possession isn't implied

MyOtherProfile · 10/11/2018 15:19

That makes it sound like it's the Smith's forge or something ie blacksmith's.

DramaAlpaca · 10/11/2018 15:20

No apostrophe. The sign is wrong.

wafflethewonderdog · 10/11/2018 15:21

It's going to be referring to our place so would you put for example The Smiths'

OP posts:
DramaAlpaca · 10/11/2018 15:22

No. Like I said, no apostrophe.

wafflethewonderdog · 10/11/2018 15:23

Thanks all 👍🏻

TonTonMacoute · 10/11/2018 15:23

Agree, that sign is wrong, but I've now started thinking how odd the word smith is. Smith, smith, smith.

Russell19 · 10/11/2018 15:24

If it was The Smiths' house, apostrophe would be after x

fizzicles · 10/11/2018 15:28

Either The Smiths which would mean the Smiths live here, or The Smiths' which would mean the house belongs to the Smiths.

InvisibleLlama · 10/11/2018 15:29

No, it doesn't need one.

Bluesheep8 · 10/11/2018 15:37

No apostrophe. I'm hearing Morrissey now aswell!

RoseGoldEagle · 10/11/2018 16:18

The Smiths live here- no apostrophe needed
The Smiths’ house - needs apostrophe
The Smiths on its own doesn’t need one, but if you’re trying to convey the meaning: ‘The Smiths’ place’, even though you’re not writing the word place, then you would need
one.

Nanny0gg · 10/11/2018 16:43

Why do you want to advertise your name outside your house?

wafflethewonderdog · 10/11/2018 17:07

It's for a caravan not a house
