So i am asking for one of my DS's who has just turned 18, he has an interview for a care support worker positions a general acute medical ward, we are over the moon happy for him. His big aim is to study nursing at university and thought this would be a good foot on ladder position, that and working in healthcare is a dream of his. So this is all good, but when he was asked to provide addresses for 3 references he put two of a current volunteering role and 1 from his previous employer (as it said you had to have a reference from your previous employer) so here is the bit hes in a flap about his previous employer (kfc) is shocking, when hes rung to ask for p45 theyve hung up the phone or said someone will get back to him and they do not. It was quite a while ago and the buisnnes manager hardly remembers him ect. DS does not want a refrence from them but thought if he said this at interview it would look like he was trying to hide something iyswim and he dose not know were to get a third refrence from otherwise.
We've asked a couple frinds and they have no idea so i thought id come to the pearls of mumsnet

All they’ll ask for is confirmation of dates of employment, sick time etc. Usually goes to an HR dept.

As he's only 18 I wouldn't put his work at of. If he is worried about the reference. Most teens of that age haven't yet worked. Just leave it out

The best bet is finding a general HR helpline to provide his work dates. This is all I did due to a gap and likely changes to management. It should be fine if he explains they aren’t being helpful. Is there a school reference he could offer instead?

Mindgoinground12 · 10/11/2018 10:58

Yes he could defiantly provide a school reference, his contracts say when he started so he could use them as well. It was a zero hours contract so i dont think proving sick matters.

It's a standard form so will always say previous employer. Not every 18 yr old will have one - he's done well to have 2 volunteering ones.

School prob will be better.
