Or is dp about Xmas dinner?

Basically none of us are particularly fond of turkey.
Dp says we could have anything, we don't have to have a toast at all we could just have sausage mash and beans or pizza and chips or spag bowl with garlic bread.
Me I would prefer a roast I dont mind if it was just chicken. I wouldn't need every single trimmings though.
Idealy I would like
Meat
Stuffing
Roast potatoes
Rice
Veg (not fussed if it was frozen mixed veg)
Yorkies and gravy
Which is a lot less from other years - we would have all above plus
Pigs in blankets
Roast carrots
Roast parsnips
Cauliflower cheese
Broccoli

I understand (like every year) its just us 4. Me and dp, DC who are 1 and 3 and are obv keen eaters, plus ds who is 3 is really understanding Xmas - meals included!

What's the argument? You both seem to be just making suggestions. If DP says you can have anything and you want a roast they surely it's going to be a roast? YABVVU to have Yorkshire pudding with anything other than beef though, and where does the rice fit in?

callymarch · 09/11/2018 14:02

Rice with a roast dinner, i've never heard of that. I havent had turkey for ages at Christmas. Nice roast beef of glazed gammon.

Emma765 · 09/11/2018 14:02

YABVU to put rice on your roast dinner.

However, personally Christmas isn't Christmas without a Christmas dinner so I think you're right. But I'd defo have pigs in blankets, they're what separate Christmas dinner from a roast.

callymarch · 09/11/2018 14:03

We always have yorkshire puddings with a roast, whatever the meat is.

AdaColeman · 09/11/2018 14:03

So is the "Unreasonable" part that you have rice with your Christmas dinner?

Nixen · 09/11/2018 14:04

YABU for not wanting pigs in blankets and instead having rice?!

charliedontsurf · 09/11/2018 14:05

Um, rice?

Blanchedupetitpois · 09/11/2018 14:05

Rice is a weird addition but otherwise sounds fine, just do what you like.

lastqueenofscotland · 09/11/2018 14:05

Rice with Christmas dinner Confused

Voodoobizkits · 09/11/2018 14:05

Everyone mentioning rice. My dp is from the Caribbean. Its a Caribbean thing. Oh I forgot sometimes we have Mac and cheese with a roast too!

Who cooks the dinner? They should get to choose what you have.

SnuggyBuggy · 09/11/2018 14:05

I think as long as you have roast potatoes rice is ok. Instead of roast potatoes would be controversial

MrsTerryPratcett · 09/11/2018 14:06

YABVU to put rice on your roast dinner.

Depends where you're from. The Caribbean people I've had Christmas with always have rice.

I think it doesn't matter what we have (never do turkey) as long as it's 'special'. Also, missing off pigs in blankets is a crime.

emwithme · 09/11/2018 14:07

We have yorkies with every roast too.

Christmas here is chateaubriand with dolphin nose dauphinoise potatoes, corn, mushrooms, peas and salad. Neither of us particularly likes turkey, although I do cook pigs in blankets and stuffing for the Boxing Day cold pickathon.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 09/11/2018 14:07

Yorkshire puddings are a must with any roast dinner. The first year I went to my in laws for Xmas I was devastated that they didn't do Yorkshire puddings! My DH hadn't prepared me for that!!

Voodoobizkits · 09/11/2018 14:08

@SnuggyBuggy Xmas is always both rice and roast potatoes! Even when we have roasts (not very often) we do both. Just half the amount you would do of each if you were having one.
Plus my DC will not eat roast potatoes.

YABVVU to have Yorkshire pudding with anything other than beef though

don't be silly

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 09/11/2018 14:12

What's the actual problem here?

croissantmuffin · 09/11/2018 14:12

@BlaaBlaaBlaa oh bloody hell you just reminded me that I too shall be Yorkshire-less at in-laws Xmas dinner this year. Huff.

MaxPepsi · 09/11/2018 14:14

Turkey is not traditional Christmas dinner.

Pigs in blankets are bloody awful, much nicer to have separate sausages and rolls of bacon.

Yorkshire puddings should only be served with beef, at a push pork but never with Turkey or chicken!

MrsStrowman · 09/11/2018 14:16

I usually love a big Christmas dinner last year we hosted ten, I cooked Turkey, goose, gammon, nutroast (in-laws) , roast potatoes, roast parsnips, mashed carrot and swede, cauliflower cheese, sprouts with chestnuts, stuffing (meat and veggie versions) pigs in blankets. We had Christmas pudding, MILs mince pies, or home made spiced orange cheesecake for dessert. There was lots left over but people took things away with them especially SIL and DB who don't really cook from scratch and we had delicious bubble and squeak on boxing Day for supper. If you're cooking you choose, unless it really stresses you out and ruins Christmas doing all the accompaniments.

This year I will have a newborn so it's just DH baby and I for dinner, we're having dauphinoise potatoes rare steak, and tenderstem brocolli with a port sauce - I've been without rare meat and alcohol for nearly nine months! People keep trying to tempt us away from home or DM said she'll bring food and cook a roast here, but I'm sticking to my plan. We'll probably buy something nice from m and s for dessert unless I have an angel baby who does nothing but sleep in which case I might bake and a platter of largely unpasteurised cheese to go with the fabulous bottle of port we brought back from Portugal that I haven't been able to try yet. I'm hungry at the thought 😋

heymammy · 09/11/2018 14:18

We never have turkey at Xmas, everyone hates it! We do roast beef or chicken with all the trimmings, lovely Smile

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 09/11/2018 14:19

@croissant we hosted the in laws last year and they got Yorkshire puddings....I think I may have converted them!!

InfantaSybilla · 09/11/2018 14:22

What does DP actually want for Xmas Dinner?

This is the first year we'll have Xmas Dinner at home just the 3 (or maybe 4 of us if I've given birth). Neither DP or I particularly like turkey so we're going to have duck with a plum sauce. Pretty tempted to also do dauphinoise potatoes with some pigs in blankets Grin

FredFlinstoneMadeOfBones · 09/11/2018 14:22

*Pigs in blankets are bloody awful, much nicer to have separate sausages and rolls of bacon.

Yorkshire puddings should only be served with beef, at a push pork but never with Turkey or chicken!*

Everything about this is wrong. Where there's gravy there can (and probably should) be yorkshires. Pigs in blanket are also bloody delicious rolls of bacon sounds downright odd!
