i hope he wins his case to show how ridiculous this whole thing is. He feels 42, his doctors confirm he could be 42 statistically therefore he IS 42. sound familiar?

SilverySurfer · 08/11/2018 10:04

I love it. I would like to identify as non-disabled and able to walk without a walking frame.

I feel better already - may go out for a jog later Grin

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 08/11/2018 10:12

I knew this would be on MN! I want to identify as retired so I don't have to come into work. What I want to know is, can I claim the same pension as I would have done if I had worked for the next 30 years, and if not, that's discrimination and I demand it is changed.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 08/11/2018 10:22

Lots of people say they feel 20 years younger, and dress in a younger style than most their age. They may be interested in music, TV, activities etc that people of the younger age are usually associated with. They could have an energetic, adventurous nature. All stuff you think of when you think of a young vs old person.

How is this different to a man who says he feels like a woman?

Whitecurrants · 08/11/2018 10:35

I'm up for it - 20 years off sounds great

I ID as a wealthy person. Declining my (maxed out) credit card is literal violence and I must have my identity validated by having lots of nice expensive things.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 08/11/2018 12:46

People are self id'ing for their sex race and now age.

If people start self id as disabled....stop the planet I want off.

That'll be the next thing. Then it'll be species.

Everanewbie · 08/11/2018 13:27

I can't help but think of that Ricky Gervais stand up where he suggests he will self identify as a chimp called Bobo. However he reserves the right to shout "the fucking kitchen is burning down" in an emergency.

olderthanyouthink · 08/11/2018 13:31

@TaliZorahVasNormandy people already are identifying as disabled and are having healthy working limbs cut off. Google "transablism" and "Body integrity dysphoria"

SilentIsla · 08/11/2018 13:34

Well, everyone and his dog are trying to claim to be something else these days so why not? He is entitled to have his case listened to. Makes a change from the usual suspects.

Avegemitesandwich · 08/11/2018 13:36

Mis-aging or dead aging him will be 'hate speech' I'm sure.....Saying '69 year olds are not 49 year olds' will be the worst thing anyone has ever said ever, and totally transphobic.

Or.... Because this doesn't involve men being able to take over women's sex based legal rights and protections, everyone will just laugh.

CocoCharlie83 · 08/11/2018 13:38

Can I self ID as being attractive? I feel like I am being discriminated against for being fugly

Carbivorous · 08/11/2018 13:43

@TaliZorahVasNormandy That is actually happening right now. There is a growing movement to allow people to self diagnose as autistic and be recognised as such without having a clinical diagnosis. They cite long waiting lists to be seen, and the fact that if someone is diagnosed at one point in time then they did have autism for all their lives up until that point, so therefore it is justified for people to self diagnose.

It may also be happening for other disabilities.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 08/11/2018 15:47

Really? People are doing this with disabilities too.

When are they doing that manned mission to Mars. ...I want in!

SuchAToDo · 08/11/2018 15:57

www.rebelcircus.com/blog/woman-lives-life-wheelchair-dreams-paralyzed/

There's a lady who is completely healthy who identifies as transabled and wants to be a paraplegic , she uses a wheelchair even though she doesn't need it , just because she identifies as having a disability that she actually doesn't have....it's madnessShock

Here's another link about that "transabled lady"...she actually wants drs to cut her spinal.cord and deliberately paralyze her as it's her dream to be paraplegicConfused

Ohyesiam · 08/11/2018 16:01

I’d like to self ID as a cat.

That’s what hat I always thought. It’s the perfect life. Sleep, stretch in the sun, be adored, sleep some more. But then I considered CATFOOD, imagine it’s mice or meaty chunks in weird jelly or nothing.Shock

BigChocFrenzy · 08/11/2018 16:07

A few people have always been delusional, but why the hell has society - and sometimes the law - accepted their delusions ?

mmmgoats · 08/11/2018 16:09

What's really interesting is how a lot of the outlets are studiously avoiding using the words 'indentifies ad' 'self IDs as' etc...

M3lon · 08/11/2018 16:15

we recently had a conversation about which protected characteristics you were allowed to choose, and which you weren't....

I think the most interesting possibility is being able to identify as transgender....even if you were born the same gender you are now.

Badmoonsarising · 08/11/2018 16:27

Actually Spain was ahead of the curve and won Gold in the 2000 Paralympic Basketball final - with a team who self identified as disabled - but were actually abled!

FekkoThePenguin · 08/11/2018 16:33

I might enter myself into an over 70s marathon race then.

GiBlues · 08/11/2018 16:37

I’d like to identify as a 66 year old so I can retire and get my state pension now🤦🏼‍♀️

MidniteScribbler · 09/11/2018 03:28

The thing is about this to me, is that it is not so different to what some transactivists are doing. "I want to be legally younger so I can get more women to go out with me", will then be followed by some sort of claim of discrimination because the women still reject him. A bit like the trans people who say that lesbians should sleep with transwomen otherwise they are discriminating against them. It's about controlling women to make them do what they want.

ShastaBeast · 09/11/2018 04:53

The problem with disability is it already is about self identifying. I self identify as such because of the impact of a health issue. Others with similar may not be impacted so much and won’t consider themselves disabled. I don’t looked disabled most of the time, I even run and go to the gym.

I don’t totally disagree with people claiming a diagnosis before it’s confirmed. I knew something was wrong with my eldest from an early age. Camhs massively fucked up her assessment so we missed out on some support because we didn’t have the report back, despite knowing for certain she’d be diagnosed. I know my mum is dyslexic and my FiL autistic despite no diagnosis, this is partly due to other family members being diagnosed and it being obvious they have the same symptoms.

Please be careful treading into the disability side. There may be fakers out there but there are more genuine disabled people who have faced judgement and disbelief.
