ExH DS and cost of school trips

DS12 plays a particular sport, membership fees etc are shared between DH & I and his dad. His dad ferries him to most games/training sessions (2-3x per wk).
An opportunity came up for DS to go on a school residential focused on this sport. It's one of several residentials held on the same week of school. I paid the deposit and DS was chuffed.
Now my ExH is in his ear saying it's too expensive, it's this, it's that, because he is assuming (fairly) that if we're paying out for this trip we won't contribute to DS going to overseas tournaments with his dad. Two overseas trips have been proposed but nothing decided.
AIBU to think that as we haven't asked him for any money ExH should STFU about the school trip and let DS enjoy it. We're not going to be dictated to because he can't afford the other trip/s alone

So as not to drop feed ExH is on long term sick after having cancer then sepsis and has only ever paid £100 maintenance per month, even when working.

If not decisions/promises had been made by you and your dh, this all seems very reasonable to me.
